one of the ordinary modes, by which tyrants accomplish their purposes without resistance, is, by disarming the people, and making it an offense to keep arms

You murdering menace!
As a personal example, I'd be put in jail in the UK for having this.

because it's intended to harm others
better question: why do you need it?
because it's intended to harm others

Intended to harm others? I use it day to day for simple tasks for when you need to cut something. It's handy to have on you, it's a tool.
I agree. They should only be for military use. Their only purpose is mass killing, no?
I normally never reply to threads like these, very debatable objects here.
But I'd like to politely inform you that there are many recreational purposes for these weapons, that include not harming any thing at all. Many people are also firearm enthusiasts, they enjoy firearms in general, also not shooting up people shit.
Owning a "assault weapon" does not mean your going to shoot someone, and that is not their only purpose.
That's complete bull, there's no such thing as a 'knife license' to own a knife, only to sell certain types
are you questioning my integrity mate
Intended to harm others? I use it day to day for simple tasks for when you need to cut something. It's handy to have on you, it's a tool.
And why are the legal types of knives not suitable for "cutting something"?
one of the ordinary modes, by which tyrants accomplish their purposes without resistance, is, by disarming the people, and making it an offense to keep arms
there is no correlation between http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Number_of_guns_per_capita_by_country and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democracy_Index
More legislation that won't do anything except piss off law abiding gun owners bravo good work.

Like sports cars, some people like collecting knives:

They don't need a reason.
So punish gun enthusiasts who enjoy guns for collecting, target shooting, and hunting because of a few assholes misusing them?
That's like saying ban all knives because people stab each other with them.
"My weekend hobby is more important than people's lives"
And why are the legal types of knives not suitable for "cutting something"?
Why am I as the citizen guilty until proven innocent just because I own a knife?
The knife isn't going to lunge at you on its own
one of the ordinary modes, by which tyrants accomplish their purposes without resistance, is, by disarming the people, and making it an offense to keep arms
I think it has less to do with the US government establishing a tyrannical dictatorship and more to do with uneducated people legislating a topic they don't understand. The same thing happens with drugs like cannabis.
Putting a foregrip on a hunting rifle makes me a baby killer!

Historically government conducted massacres were preceded by gun bans and whatnot.
Hitler banning Jews from owning firearms, Khmer Rouge, etc.
Hmm.... what should we do. Should we fix and reform this country's failing mental health care system? Nah, that requires too much work! I know, let's just start banning things that weren't even used in these incidents!
because it's intended to harm others

Are you kidding me, with this type of mentality why do you need a personal computer when we got public ones, why do you need a car if we got public transit.
A knife is a tool. It can be used for various things.
I'm sorry that I have the freedom to own and collect what I want. A lot of people ask why do you care so much, wouldn't you care if your hobby was being attacked for no reason?
"My weekend hobby is more important than people's lives"
What a disgusting straw man argument. I'm sure responsible gun owners will love to hear you think that because they own guns, people are dying.
Historically government conducted massacres were preceded by gun bans and whatnot.
Hitler banning Jews from owning firearms, Khmer Rouge, etc.
Except even if they had guns, that wouldn't have prevented them from being massacred.
Hitler held Germany by the balls and had a massive army and support of most of the population. The Jews were being increasingly isolated for years beforehand, and guns didn't save them.
This is retarded.
We don't need weapon bans. We need weapon education.
so retards can kill more people with less bullets?
Ban things that can be used as weapons
Well in Serbian film a guy kills a dude with his dick
Ban penises
I think the problem with the USA is that banning gun sales doesn't help much because everyone and their mum already owns one. Gun control is very strict in Belgium (retardedly so) but mass shootings are very rare.

Bold statement but okay If you say so.

Belgium actually isn't that bad, at least on an international comparison.
They can own handguns and spooky black rifles among other things
It's the same argument that's used in every discussion about the Brit's weapon ban. If you ban assault weapons, then the criminals who are already going to break the law will still acquire the guns illegally. Would you rather have dangerous weapons in the hands of some good people and some bad, or only the bad.
I don't really think that's a valid argument. Do you think Adam Lanza would really have been able to acquire a firearm had his house not been full of them? Stuff like this doesn't really tend to happen in the UK, gun crime tends to be linked to gang culture most of the time and even then its reasonably rare. But I guess you can't use one example as a means to ban something that has existed in a culture for decades, even if it is a complete tragedy.
My two cents: If we have to go with gun restrictions:
heavily restrict pistols because 95% of firearm crimes involve handguns.
Ban automatic weapons period, no ifs, ands, or butts like we have now
Ban the AR-15, and include a very detailed description of what an AR-15 is so gun manufacturers can't just make a slightly different version and keep selling. Why AR-15? because its the easiest 'assault weapon' to acquire, and is very easy to rapid-fire, as the psycho in Conn. proved
Put a lot of money into rebuilding the mental health industry.
Edit:
okay, ignore that, I'm done discussing this topic until I can get a better balance of information sources
ban sports car collections

what are you gonna do with sports cars anyway other than drive em around

your hobby can be sacrificed for the sake of pedestrian safety

That's really vague.
"My weekend hobby is more important than people's lives"
yeah I have a gun collection
it's a lot of work, you have to murder innocent children with them at least once a month or they go bad
Bold statement but okay If you say so.
The holocaust and Second World War would have still happened, and would have been just as bloody.

I know, seriously, I had to hire someone to take mine out shooting while I was at college
