Most annoying feature of No Man's Sky right there.

I'm waiting for video games to get over annoying crafting mechanics in general, really.

Agreed.
Developers really need to find a better solution to item building than the whole 'crafting' thing.
Agreed.

The way NMS did it was absolutely atrocious though. One of the worst UI's I ever had to deal with.

People who defended this game and its gameplay are insane.
Agreed.

I'll take that as sarcasm; most games that include crafting just use it as a grindy excuse to pad out gameplay. Finding a Really Cool Thing through exploration and skill normally feels more rewarding than hunting down ten Kind Of Cool Things and one Not So Cool Thing to combine into a Really Cool Thing.
But that's just my opinion on the matter, some games do crafting well, but normally only when crafting is the main focus instead of an added feature.
If you weren't being sarcastic I apologize for wasting your time with my opinion, it's hard to tell on the internet.

item building is fine. but there is more ways to do it that a crafting system.
Until now item building has been done inside menus. It's just boring gameplay and lazy design.
Make sense now?

Factorio has an excellent crafting system because it automates everything and you can get your thing crafted with just one button.
me buying it on day 1 was a mistake
me buying it on day 1 was a mistake
Same.
This game was 90 dollars after tax in canada.
what in the fuck was I thinking.
Game is barely worth 30.
They really need to do something about the price of games. It keeps going up and up and up. Especially here in canada. It's not a viable form of media anymore that is worth its cost in my opinion.

You know what's the funniest thing? There was $150 a collectors edition with a space ship replica.

It's still not out yet. :v:

it was 93 for me in ontario everything included
based on what they showed in the trailers it definitely looked worth full price to me, i really hope they get got for false advertising
I feel bad for people who pour lots of passion and effort into exciting projects, only for all their work to get marketed in an extremely misleading way by someone who just wants to make a quick buck.
We don't know the full story behind No Man's Sky, but it's happened a lot in the games industry and if anything is just getting worse.
No amount of adequate advertising would have made the game any better. Yeah there was some issues with multiplayer (even though we all knew multiplayer was never going to be a thing) but the game itself was just shit
I guess that's what you get for being extremely quiet about all these "AMAZING FEATURES AND THINGS TO DO" when inside you know there isn't a whole ton of content
I would say they're being hacked still. Polygon got an email again.
A suspicious email sent to two Polygon staffers, neither of whom corresponded directly with Murray previously, contained an “apology” for the game. The email apes frequent community criticisms, and includes a tell in the spelling of “apologize” (British English would spell it differently, as Sean Murray does in this post). Here’s the email:
No Man's Sky was a mistake.
I have contacted you because the silence from Hello Games has been unwarranted and unprofessional. The community has asked me to speak up, and I have a confession to make. The game was simply unfinished upon arrival. Our hand was forced by not only Sony, but the community as well. The constant harassment and absolute gross misconduct on the community's part has made it hard to fulfill our artistic vision, while the pressure from Sony to release the game as soon as possible forced us to cut key features. I want to apologize for what we did not deliver on, as the game does not meet up to what our artistic vision was.
However, we do wish that the community was more understanding of our situation. Many people have asked for refunds despite our promise to continually improve and update No Man's Sky. We are just a small studio that has poured our blood, sweat, and tears into this project. The complete lack of respect when it comes to the work we have done absolutely saddens not only myself, but the team as well. We want to improve the game to the point we dreamed of it being and beyond.
I hope everyone affected understands,
Sean Murray

Must have been 93 for me too. Toronto tax gouging.
It's true, after the 25th planet my thoughts were "where are all the sand dune worms and giant dinosaurs.
Instead we got mini t-rex's with asses for faces hopping around on a single stump foot.

Well, that email certainly is why I am not on the whole hate train and more or less I do understand the fact that they got swallowed up by everything and how it probably affected them in how it all went down.
I hope that emails true, because it sheds light on what I expected to be the reason everything went terribly for them and not the whole greed aspect that seemingly has manifested everywhere on the internet.

Gotta be fake, they wouldn't shit on Sony like that for fear of being crushed.
If it was such a mistake, give people back their money!
Honestly they need to do away with giving refunds for digital purchases for "i don't like the game" until people learn to stop fucking buying games they have unrealistic expectations for. I'm sure whoever handles all that billing / refund shit would appreciate it if people would do a little research before they spend their money and then bitch about having no idea what they were buying
actually several features left out of release did exist, according to a build that was shown off four months before release.
there are a lot of videos on this. people are still baffled by it.
There's a theory going that Sony forced changes through after focus testing the game and blindly rubber stamping whatever batshit feedback the rando public idiots they brought in gave them. This is based on a hypothesis put forward by someone who claims to have been a focus tester for Sony's European PS4 division on titles in the past -- they didn't test NMS but in their experience they saw testers trying to push Flat Earther(!) agendas into video games among a ton of other crazy shit, and a lot of the changes between the T-minus 4-month build and the live build are things that could've died in focus test.
Thing is, if this is the case and a lot of the missing features were cut because of meddling from Sony, HG's contract with Sony would definitely preclude them from blaming Sony. That could even open them to legal trouble, depending on the terms of the contract. Biting the hand that feeds you is a good way of ensuring no publisher touches you again, and it would stand to reason that Hello Games wants to at least hope for another chance with another game someday. Regaining the trust of consumers may be difficult to impossible, but if they lose trust with publishers they'll have to try and get their game to market without any help; if NMS had been left without publisher intervention it'd have been cancelled and Sean having sold his house to fund the game would've been a futile waste. [sp]You know who's in this position of having burned all his professional bridges? Derek Smart. There is no reason to play any of his games unless you're doing an ironic shitty video games Lets Play. Nobody at HG wants to be the next.[/sp]
So, if Sony did meddle, we're not likely to hear it from HG, but we can read between the lines and find hints that suggest it. The planet rotation feature being removed was explained by Sean as having come up in beta feedback as being confusing to players who couldn't work out how to get back to a place, so out goes the realistic day/night cycle. Making some sort of location bookmarking system was not an option I guess?
A number of other features were dumbed right the fuck down, and whether or not it was due to evil dudes in boardrooms from Sony making the call, a large number of the features dropped/watered down in that last-stretch time period are things that made the game more sophisticated and less immediately approachable. Things that would confuse testers if you picked random people that've never held a PS4 controller in their lives, which seems to be who they got since rotating planets confused them.
I didn't apply for a refund because I had almost 40 hours into the game when the "omg Steam is refunding NMS no questions asked" meme started and I felt I'd definitely played too much to argue I didn't get my money's worth.
Unwilling to refund isn't the same as being satisfied, though. I haven't launched the game since August. I'm waiting for a reason why.

in my opinion when crafting is involved, either a game is based around crafting, which can go a number of different potential ways but is typically there for survival-based games and I guess it usually works, or that game has crafting as a supplemental system that isn't really required except for really powerful / unique stuff
otherwise they're probably are just using it to pad a consumer's playtime like an asshole
Spore II
Spore at least had an excuse. They had big promises but were getting there, but EA forced maxis to speed up development and simplify it for younger ages, which cut a lot of content.
you mean the forbes source above that says it was a disgruntled employee? which matches the polygon source by the way, and i assume the person forbes talked to was not sean murray, which makes the story a little less blurry.
They never said it was a disgruntled employee??
They said "Now, the question is: was Hello Games' account hacked, or was this the work of a disgruntled employee?"

it's video game development. Sometimes things just don't work out. It's not baffling by any means.
ie: look at Rust when it started development compared to what it is now. lot's of things have been omitted because they didn't pan out.

That's not what happened. The team had conflicting ideas about the game they wanted to make. Half the team wanted a simulation-like game, and the other half wanted a casual 'bring people together' game.
Have they adressed the criticism surrounding no man's sky at all yet, or where all the missing features are?
Last i heard murray was basically in hiding, is this incident the first time he's even tweeted since the release?
