Nintendo not allowing SSBM to be streamed at EVO after fans raised $90,000 for breast cancer researc
lets plays are not really "making money off of people's work." videogames aren't like movies where everyone's experience will be the same, because you're watching a specific person play a game a certain way
And you're losing the key component to a game: actually getting to play the game.
Their PR department is going to have a fit. Chances are it was some out of touch idiots in the legal team that made this happen.
My gut tells me they try to contact Nintedo via the Legal Page and got someone who didn't know what EVO was.
And you're losing the key component to a game: actually getting to play the game.
Yeah, watching a video of a game instead of playing it will usually do that.
good going nintendo
[sp]not really, please dont kill me[/sp]
so less coverage of tourneyfags?
this honestly doesn't surprise me, Nintendo has never been as receptive of fan events and fan projects. I notice this for most Japanese devs in comparison to Western devs come to think of it
it's like fans are in this sphere, this "fanzone" to them (don't take that last part seriously :v:)
SEGA's powertrip on YouTube comes to mind.
Between Nintendo's reluctance to include modern online multiplayer features in their games and their complete obliviousness when it comes to how quickly bad PR spreads in 2013 I can only conclude that nobody at Nintendo has heard of the internet before
They might just be scared of the global market, they're still sitting on a lot of Japanese-exclusive titles if I recall correctly. Seems so weird/obsolete in this digital distribution age where even region locking is now commonly bypassed by VPNs.
I do hope whatever is bottlenecking currently is getting replaced by cross-continental standards at some point, 'cause the internet sure as hell isn't going anywhere. Plenty of people out there that don't want to wait for release date lag (because they're afraid of spoilers for instance), so they go to the Piratebay because it offers the better service. Same with fan translations of all kinds of media stuck in Japan for ages.

I wonder if they'll come after those next. Tomato has always said if Nintendo asked him to take the translation of Mother 3 down he'd do it. Be a damn shame, I doubt many localization teams could have kept the feel of the game's dialogue as well as they did.
As for the topic at hand, I feel like it's Nintendo's high muckity-mucks being stuck in the old days, on purpose. Nintendo games are always very, uh, gamey(?), that is to say like single player or local multiplayer experiences, typically light-hearted and simple. Even SSB is basically a party game. Seems like they're torn between keeping their image as something you get together with friends to play and actually adapting to modern tech. Might feel like a stream breaks that image or some such, I dunno.
[sp]Fucking FRIENDCODES, what is that shit?[/sp]

Alas, poor banana.
Damn, SSBM is my favorite fighting game. I hope this gets turned around and they can still stream it.
Perhaps EVO should have secured the rights to use the games before having people raise $90,000 in a contest?
[editline]9th July 2013[/editline]
because making money off of other people's work is a pretty shitty thing to do.
Nintendo's work stopped once the product left the door. Gameplay is 100% the work of the person playing. It's not like their models or art are being ripped from the game and used in something else.
If I post a video of myself driving around in my car that happens to be a Honda, should Honda be able to sue me for using their work?
Copyright law has become so damn perverted, it's supposed to protect companies from people blatantly ripping off their shit, not to control what we're allowed to fucking look at
Does the Wii U and 3Ds both use friend codes still?
Wii U uses Miiverse IDs (so, for example mine would be DrCactus)
3DS uses a universal friend code tha you only need to use once, but Nintendo has stated they're putting Miiverse on the 3DS and that both Wii U and 3DS will both share the same Miiverse ID
No guys, Nintendo can do no wrong, they are absolutely perfect!

Seriously, though. Nintendo fans drink the kool-aid so hard they'll follow Mario off a cliff.

Maybe a small minority do, but blocking SSBM from EVO if this was done with approval of the higher ups would be a very unforgivable act.
so less coverage of tourneyfags?
it's fucking EVO, not a group of obsessed competitive people at your middle/high school that you don't like
so less coverage of tourneyfags?
EVO is the World Cup of Fighting Tournaments. SSBM was the fan choice game as a fundraising tool for Cancer Research.
Not only this is a big deal from a gaming tournament standpoint, but it could possibly sour the water for any charity activities for these events in the future.
basically if you don't like evo i don't like you
we can't be friends
I didn't even know what EVO was until I saw this article.
No guys, Nintendo can do no wrong, they are absolutely perfect!
Does anyone even believe this anymore? The whole company has been a continual chain of fuckups lately.
This really seems like a kneejerk reaction from their legal team rather than something the executives paid attention to (or even know about). Surely the leaders of the company wouldn't be stupid enough to pull copyright bullshit on a charity event.
But I guess we won't know until we get official comment.
I’ve just receive word from Nintendo that the Evo Smash Bros. Melee stream will be allowed to proceed. We will be restoring the original stream and tournament schedules. Obviously this is a huge relive for all of us here and we’re thrilled that the world will get to see the best Smash players fight it out this weekend. Thanks to everyone online who supported both Evo and Smash.
[editline]10th July 2013[/editline]
why would you place the top 8 for the most hype game at evo at the earliest time possible?

Can you update OP to include this?
Can you update OP to include this?
I would, but there seems to be some bug with editing an OP. Bringing up the edit page just erases everything in the original post.
Worst comes to worst:
Quote the post, copy-paste everything into Notepad, then edit, paste everything back in, remove the quotes, and add the updated content.
They've been having smash bros melee since fucking 2007, if they wanted to complain they should have done it then. Please know about shit before you try to shoot shit.

welcome to modern copyright law and why companies are so itchy about letting you broadcast their works
You let them stream it once without explicit permission and you basically hand them a legal carte blanche to do so, and your rights to your own works get really fuzzy if you don't protect them from commercialization, i.e. exactly what is going on here

Well thankfully Nintendo pulled a 180 very quickly.
I feel like there was some miscommunication/misunderstanding of the situation. Or a couple people at Nintendo's legal department being huge dicks before the higher ups heard about it.
