Windows 8 sucks, I can't use the start menu as I could in Windows 7 because my netbook uses the most common netbook resolution, 1024x600.
This will be worse than Vista
As in?
This will be worse than Vista
I highly doubt that. For one, it apparently runs faster than Win7, which is impressive in and of itself considering how fast Win7 runs, so that's a massive plus. Microsoft's flawed experiment with the UI is, at least to me, a minor, most likely correctable inconvenience.
Here's a larger shot. [t]http://i.cubeupload.com/I9yk6Q.png[/t]
Metro in general looks terrible, what was wrong with this style: [t]http://i.imgur.com/HoGWe.png[/t] I really don't like where Microsoft are going with Windows 8, hopefully they change their minds with Windows 9.
looks gross, better for tablets, never want to see this on a desktop of my own.
Probably because it's so small and cramped. Also it's not finished as the scrollbars point out. Here's a larger shot of the dark one. [t]http://i.cubeupload.com/DjD7Jl.png[/t]
Strangely, the dark UI for VS looks worse than the light one. Which is weird, I normally prefer darker UIs for coding in. Then again IDEs do seem to look weird darker, text editors tend to look better. Might be something to do with the toolbars and controls. Either way, it looks much better at a proper resolution, as it isn't as cramped.
Such as? I'm genuinely curious.
Well since 99% of consumers have Windows preinstalled on their machine, why would one bother installing linux when Windows 8 is faster (no really I'm serious), better program compatibility, an industry standard, easy to use, etc. I guess if you had some ancient PC and you wanted it to go to use but don't wanna pay money Linux is good, but Windows 8 feels like those easy to use Linux distros: No drive installations necessary (not even for fucking printers or web cams), installs quickly, boots the fastest, has a built in pdf reader, is as user friendly as a Mac now (but with more options that power users need), secure boot and sandboxing, built in Microsoft Security Essentials, umm what else? I guess Linux is still good for servers too, can't beat free for that.

Light looks a bit better but I think the reason why the dark one looks like shit is because the icons are outlined instead of inverted. In the light UI you don't see the outlines of the icons.
Wait, I thought the whole tablet style interface was optional. What gives?

Yeah 8 seems like I'm running Linux Mint with a shell that happens to resemble Windows and Metro. [editline]2nd March 2012[/editline] Plus it can actually play games and run most programs...

Actually it's already getting on my nerves and I haven't even used it. [editline]2nd March 2012[/editline]
Wait, I thought the whole tablet style interface was optional. Huh, so what does the non-tablet interface look like, Windows 7? I haven't been able to find any screens of that.
Start up for the first time. Press windows key. "What the fuck is this bullshit?" Delete VM.

I am loving this OS! It's all the good from Windows 7, improved. I was not a fan of Metro UI until i tried it out, now I really like it. If you are considering downloading the preview give it a try! Don't listen to first post, find out for yourself.
Hmm, quite.
No matter what you're thinking about it, I wouldn't use it in a VM, and I would definitely not judge it on that. Try it on a laptop, I actually prefer it to Windows 7 by far on that. I haven't used it much on my desktop, as it's more of a gaming machine than "lets reformat every tuesday!" machine, so I can't give any real comment on that. I find it to be different, but far from terrible. The great stuff makes up for the bad stuff, in my opinion.
Hmm, quite.
Still as shit and untrue as when the joke was first made. [editline]2nd March 2012[/editline]
And god forbid you try it on a netbook where the metro UI won't even run apps on 1024x600
I'm not defending the decision as in "it's a good decision", but I think you're making a bigger deal of it than it is. And why would you buy a new OS costing more than the worth of the netbook? Doesn't make sense for neither you nor Microsoft.
It isn't a bad netbook, it has a dual core atom.
Still, I don't see how it'd be worth buying 100$ worth of OS, if you aren't really going to gain much from it. And if the Atom is not from this generation, then yes, it's not very good. You're better off just keeping Windows 7 on it until it goes down the drain.
Nevermind, I took initiative and looked at the FAQ and saw that accounts and files would be carried over if I upgraded.

Its good enough it can play some low end games pretty well.
I was disagreeing. You said Windows is faster then Linux which is pretty BS.
Windows 8 is faster than Linux. And I'm running 8 on a shitty laptop. No seriously try it out if you doubt me.
Windows 8[/B is faster than Linux. And I'm running 8 on a shitty laptop. If you turn off X anything runs faster then windows 8 I should also note.
And god forbid you try it on a netbook where the metro UI won't even run apps on 1024x600
I wish the start screen was counted as a metro app, because then I would drop my resolution to 800x600 so I could enjoy a proper desktop environment.
Windows 8 is faster than Linux. And I'm running 8 on a shitty laptop. No seriously try it out if you doubt me.
What distro?
