I think he means the Windows Kernel which has a built in GUI is faster then the Linux kernel which does not.

That UI is a program that's loaded after Windows has booted.

I took the shot of the thumbnail because otherwise it's fullscreen.

You can't run without it, its required otherwise you are unable to operate windows.
minimal windows setup vs minimal linux setup.

You can run without it. The bootloader tells Windows to run that program afterwards (selecting 8 and skipping the old selection menu). You can modify the BCD to not do that.

Wow, I think mine was done downloading in like 3 minutes
Consumer Preview means that details aren't final and they're open to criticism, right?
Right?

If you want an apples to apples comparison you would have to include X11.
Sure you could run Linux without X, but if you want to do anything that isn't server related you're going to be running X.
Linux without X is really great for servers, not so great for watching movies, browsing the web, etc.

They want to launch it this year; it's highly unlikely they're going to undo everything they've done at this point. They're more concentrating on bugs and crashes.
It is this generation.. whats with your wild assumptions. Its good enough it can play some low end games pretty well.
Because I don't see a lot of newer netbooks. Regardless, most netbooks won't have the newest generation atom, and will be pretty limited in terms of power. It wouldn't make sense for Microsoft to target the netbook upgrade market, and 1024x600 is a pretty low resolution no matter what. As I said, they probably didn't find the new start menu very useful on that resolution, and therefore it wouldn't make sense for them to put it there. If netbook users want to have Windows 8, they'll have to buy a new netbook, or some other computer, and that fits Microsoft pretty well. I'm not saying it's nice and all, but it makes sense from their point of view.
Wow what's with people going full retard and saying it's shit.
The desktop is fine, the metro interface is good, it's just that it doesn't feel that good to use both at the same time.
This is every transformer laptop's dream, though. It quickly switches from a full-on desktop OS to a tablet friendly enviroment.
can it run steam or orgin?1
Fuck them and their dreams, I want another Windows 7, not Windows: Tablet Edition.
Fuck you and what you want, the demand is moving more and more towards touchscreens, and that's what the devs will code, and that's what will give them money.
The desktop enviroment is still the same. You can go through windows 8 without using any metro apps. And windows 7 is still an up-to-date OS, and there is no reason to upgrade to 8 if you don't want to. Hell, I'm still using XP as my main OS.

If you're talking about the Asus Transformer, that runs on an ARM CPU. So even if you installed Windows 8 for ARM you couldn't use any of the normal x86 Windows apps so you lose any benefit you would have gained from using Windows. Might as well just use Linux (which has much better/more mature ARM support).

I'm talking about transformer notebooks.
Yeah it'll give them money, albeit a pitiful amount.
Windows 7 sold 600 million units without any of that tablet "metro" shit, if demand was actually moving towards tablets Windows 7 wouldn't have sold so well.
You clearly don't understand the word "moving"
Fuck them and their dreams, I want another Windows 7, not Windows: Tablet Edition.
Then don't buy it. No one's forcing you, really. I don't plan on buying it either, but you don't seem like you have even tried it out. At least i couldn't find any other post about Windows 8 than the ones in this thread. Of course I could be wrong, but if you're simply calling this "Tablet Edition", you're off. It's as, or more, functional on my laptop than Windows 7 was, and it's not the best touchpad in the world, either.
You guys are so weak to change.
It's not moving, desktop sales are slowing because everyone already owns a fucking desktop.

I welcome change when it actually improves something.
Everyone owned a fucking desktop around the time Windows Vista came out.
Then everyone started buying laptops. Now everyone's starting to give in to touchscreen tablets and all-in-one desktops.

People shouldn't be forced to use something they don't like though. Users should have options on how to use something.

Got my first bluescreen.

No one is forcing you to use it, they are simply making this option as well.
No one is forcing you to use it, they are simply making this option as well.
I have yet to see Microsoft saying anything about being able to turn off the start screen.
People shouldn't be forced to use something they don't like though. Users should have options on how to use something.
If it wasn't enabled, they could never get people to get used to it, and later iterations following Windows 8 design would not be very welcome. Of course that's taking it to extremes, but everyone would simply just use the old interface, and it would be wasted work.
I tried it in a VM last night, and I would definitely see why it would be great on a tablet with touch screen. However, I don't want my desktop or laptop to perform like a tablet. Unless MS makes some changes that would make it more traditional Windows like, I'm gonna skip upgrading. Removing the Start button and menu pretty much left me clueless on how to use the OS in explorer mode
No one is forcing you to use it, they are simply making this option as well.
Yeah, this. Win7 is still competent, and we can still pray for an "I'm using a fucking desktop" mode that disables metro.
It's not that much of a change, anyways, just click desktop and you're back in good old Win7-style desktop.
it looks pretty but will easily get annoying for a normal computer, but I'd love either that or ICS on a tablet.

Make it default with the option to disable.
In other news: Windows 8 complaints reach 24 million in less then 1 hour.
You're not forced to buy it, though.
Well of course, that doesn't help Microsoft. If they want 8 to be successful they have to address the concerns of the users who would be using it so it'll sell well.

Holy shit.
That's one stupid BSOD.
