Not grasping at the straws, a politician, no matter where should not be anywhere near that flag right now if not ever especially if they work in the Indigenous affairs ministry
Tbh, were I not so profilific on the internet, I'd probably not have any real knowledge of the confed battle flag either.
It's basically seen as the standard for country music and associated with rugged wild west america more often than not, outside of the US at least.
Sure, most people in the western world will recognise it as the flag of the southern side of the civil war, but they'll rarely see the negative connotations associated with it (particularly the recend ones)
Because an indigenous affairs adviser, somebody whose specific goal is to help build relations between the government and an Australian indigenous minority is wearing a flag with symbolizes a state that existed for the sole purpose of continuing slavery.
So he needs to research every piece of cloth he wears in order to avoid accidentally offending someone because a particular pattern has a negative meaning to some people on the other side of the planet. Just let the guy alone, he made a mistake, he shouldn't be expected to know everything in order to avoid offending someone. He doesn't spend his days on Facepunch reading about stupid American controversies. You're acting like he was wearing a Nazi Flag going "But it's a symbol of peace in Asia".
He probably put it on because he wanted to dress up as an American cowboy.
