Salmond goes full stupid: "We're keeping the pound - and if we don't, you're getting all our debt."
Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond has insisted Scotland will retain Sterling under independence, in the face of continued opposition criticism.
He said a formal currency union with the rest of the UK was the best option, saying: "It's Scotland's pound and we are keeping it."
[...]
Mr Salmond said that if UK politicians refused to share the Bank of England, Scotland would not have to share the national debt. This would lead to George Osborne and Ed Balls having to tell the people of England they would give the Scots "a present of £5 billion a year," he claimed.
Its funny that a potentially interesting, inclusive and fair discourse on national identity and the right for self-governance is being dragged through the mud by retards like Salmond.
At the start I thought its likely that Scotland would separate, but now I can't see many people being dumb enough beyond "Muh bannockburn"
I pretty much completely agree with the guy in the article video, I'm baffled as to why Salmond refuses to provide a plan B. It seems like virtually any plan B would be better than just saying "nah they'll change their mind just wait"
if Scotland was to be independent, why don't they just get the Euro, this makes no sense
if Scotland was to be independent, why don't they just get the Euro, this makes no sense
Euro don't want um lol

Time to unleash the $
they dont use the £ anyway they just use heroin. its the de facto currency of scotland
Scotland has the resources, tourism(hunting/fishing), and ideals to maintain their own currency or continue to use the currency of the United Kingdom. The Euro is unstable as shit, and preferably they'd become a middle ground region for the United Kingdom and European Union in terms of economic sanctuary.
In speaking of hunting and fishing... I really do hope that the Scottish actually go about the creation of a wildlife conservation departments for different parts of the country. The Red/Roe Deer problem, constant viruses in Hare and Rabbits, and depletion of Salmon stocks... All of which need to be dealt with in such a way where Scotland can maintain a ecologically safe and economically sound hunting and fishing industry.

I can't see environmental changes like that being the priority of any newly independent nation, unfortunately. Energy, infrastructure, foreign relations and domestic politics will most likely come first.
Isn't Scotland trying to take with it like most of the UK's offshore energy and oil anyways, doubt they will be allowed to dump their debt and this whole thing reaks of brinksmanship

This guy sounds like an idealist but, just about everything one side says is a bad thing he says is good for scotland, guess I'm kinda out of this but he doesn't seem any better than some of the politicians over here
The Euro is unstable as shit
since when?
since when?
Since Greece and Portugal, a lot of confidence in the Euro has dropped
they dont use the £ anyway they just use heroin. its the de facto currency of scotland
Eat heroin, inject shortbread.
I'm pretty sure negotiations don't work like that. If they do vote for independence, can the UK government just say no unless you meet these terms?
Has anyone considered that Scotland using the pound is likely to make the pound not stable?
It's just the same fear tactics that have been used by Westminster.
Like them saying there will be a closed border and shit.
"It's Scotland's pound and we are keeping it."
No it's the United Kingdom's pound. If Scotland wants to leave then they have no right to use it.
Is there any precedent for a country changing currencies and dumping all their debt as a result? Just seems so absurd, surely one would be expected to pay back debt regardless of the currency; sure as hell didn't happen when we switched to the Euro.
scotland should in tradition of naming currency based on a unit of measurement, adopt the Pint
Mr Salmond said that if UK politicians refused to share the Bank of England, Scotland would not have to share the national debt
Tell that to the national corporations you'll have to split up (and by extent assume half of their debt) Eck.
Scotland can use the pound if it wants - but without a central bank it will be extremely dangerous. The Scottish pound will be heavily tied to the English pound (so much for Scottish independence) and the Bank of England will be under no obligation to lend to Scotland. Also, I understand that it will jeopardise Scotland's chances of joining the EU.
I also can't see how Scotland will be able to easily sustain itself economically with all its expenses as they are. They will definitely struggle to carry on with free higher education, and might also struggle with the NHS as well. Bear in mind that Scotland will lose a lot of economic investment that it gains from being part of the UK - both directly and indirectly. Shipbuilding for the RN will shift away from Scotland to somewhere else (the new Type-26 frigates were due to be built in Glasgow - this will change if there is independence). Communities will also suffer at the closure of various military sites, and there is also the inevitable influx of people and businesses who will move south into England. Yet somehow Salmond expects to be able to deal with all this, carry on paying for a number of expensive services, and also rely on an unsupported currency.
And all that is without taking into consideration the debt they will have to pay (you can't just walk away from debt which you owe a fair share of).

How do you know, exactly?
Maybe he's having second thoughts about it and is now trying to push people away from the yes vote by just coming out with some of the most idiotic bollocks he can.

Indeed - at this stage I am starting to believe that the best thing that could have happened for the 'No' campaign was Alex Salmond.
Pound's got the Queen on it. Queen's in the UK. Leave the UK, leave the Queen, can't use her money. Fuck off Salmond.

Scotland would not be leaving the common wealth. Queen would still be their head of state.
Time to unleash the $
In comes the dollars, and in come the cents; to replace the pounds, and the shillings, and the pence.
Wasn't a big part of independence having the freedom to handle taxes differently and more fairly. Keeping the pound would mean the UK still decides a lot of stuff about finance.
Imagine having money with Alex salmons fat face on it

It'll be like carrying a baked potato in your pocket at all times.
Why don't they just start using Dodgecoin?
scotland should in tradition of naming currency based on a unit of measurement, adopt the Pint
Some people in Scotland would actually pronounce that the same :v:
