Spider-Man's Andrew Garfield Wants Mary Jane to Be Male
is being heterosexual really 100% imperative to his character though? was there a famous spiderman story where he joined westboro baptist or something? i always thought the idea of his character was just a dude getting bit by a radioactive spider and receiving superpowers
To me...yeah. A lot of his mythos and stories revolve around his personal life and it's nice for film adaptations to follow that concept the creators thought up when they created Spider-Man. The appeal of Spider-Man is not his powers but how much people could relate to the character and him go through a lot of problems we go through that most superheroes don't. That's how he was created, a white straight awkward teenager who later grew more confident and ended up with Mary Jane Watson after going through some great personal tragedies...before Quesada fucked that all up. Again, same reason why Jor-El shouldn't be a talking bagel. There is nothing wrong with the concept of a gay Spider-Man but that's not how he was created and unlike Superman, old Webhead didn't go through several eras where he was drastically rewritten time after time.
because they don't stand out enough unless they explisivly do something.
Sexual orientation doesn't stand out like race and gender do.
...good then? why does it have to be a song and dance number
I think the biggest problem here is it'd be in the middle of a movie series where in the first installment he was chasing around emma stone.
so he'd be bisexual then

real talk, what does him being homosexual change? so he'd be a white gay/bi awkward teenager who grows more confident and ends up with michael john watson after going through some great personal tragedies. are gay people harder to relate to? i don't understand
Marty Jane?

Beats me. an old CG cartoon called Reboot had a homosexual background character, but he may have been the only one and he may have come off as uncomfortable to be around. He also wore purple and spoke a certain way to make it more clear he was homosexual. However, as a kid, that fact just flew over my head.
I think the real problem may be that homosexuals can't figure out how to represent themselves in the right light in media without making people feel uncomfortable or risking being unidentifiable.

What does Peter Parker being black change? Or him being asian or any other change? Nothing really to the concept/core of his character but I did mention the need to respect and follow the basic source material. It'd be a massive cop out for me because I wanted to see Mary Jane Watson done right/accurately, not the generic second love interest. What does Jor-El being a talking bagel change? Essentially, the character is an alien that sends his son to Earth before Krypton blows up. Maybe Jor-El being a talking bagel makes more sense since he's an alien but that's not what Siegel and Shuster thought up when they made that character. The Amazing Spider-Man movies should at least bring in the Mary Jane Watson that was created within the comics which the Spider-Man fans grew to love.

Again, there is nothing wrong with Parker being gay or bisexual but I want the films to follow the basic main source material first before other interpretations pop up.

the films already did lol there were three of them before this series
jor-el being a talking bagel is a different matter entirely because talking bagels don't exist and therefore need justification to appear in a movie in place of someone normally rendered as a humanoid

Supermen that can leap tall buildings in a single bound and that can change the course of mighty rivers don't exist either. In fact, isn't it more likely that an alien species will look more like a talking bagel than a human? Kryptonians look exactly like humans and them being in yellow sunlight can somehow make them fly and shoot lasers out of their eyes. Sometimes, writers try to write in justifications on why they are like that but Grant Morrison explained it pretty well why you shouldn't try to go for too much realism.

Also, I did mention on how the Raimi's Mary Jane Watson wasn't like the comics MJ at all other than the fact she had red hair that somehow got progressively lighter and lighter with each sequel. The comics MJ needs a shot at the silver screen.
I don't see the problem with it at all, except that Spiderman isn't supposed to be about sexuality anyways. All that would come of this would be the movie turning into "The amazing gay spiderman" because that's all anyone would see it as. Because apparently being gay has to define everyone rather than just being what kind of equipment they wanna handle in the bedroom
finally all those Spider-Man/Venom fan fictions or artwork will become reality
Yeah, don't make a movie about any of the gay supers or anything, just change an existing one.
Granted, they're few in number; but they exist, damnit.
I so want a Batwoman movie. I would see it at least three times, and even go on opening weekend.
finally all those Spider-Man/Venom fan fictions or artwork will become reality
I see way more Spider-Man/Deadpool fanfiction and artwork for some reason.
From just a movie standpoint, sure, why not, but if they're trying to be as close to the comics as possible then nah.
I'm pretty sure these movies are meant to be more accurate than the original movies, so, what the fuck, lol
[editline]11th July 2013[/editline]
I like the newer movies, but this is... ehhhh, yeah, not really needed
That is so forced and hammed in politcal correctness. Changing an already well established character into a gay person doesn't really help the gay acceptance issue. Why don't you create a new character to be gay, except make it seem like it's no big deal and he is still a badass and not really that different from other superheros.
Not just, "HEY IM SPIDER-MAN, LOOK AT ME KISS THIS DUDE OH WOW TAKE THAT YOU HOMOPHOBES."

Or just make a Batwoman movie. EVERYONE WINS!
Aww come on, Stick to the comics man. I rather have Mary Jane than having the director doing something that would risk losing a lot of fans. Show the original source material some respect.
the source material's taken a crazy turn lately what with doc ock and all.

Want to experiment with depictions of sexuality in a genre that doesn't seem to have material for that route? Bam! "Justice League" where "Superman" and "Batman" are happily married to each other.
They already did that with the multiverse.

I see nothing wrong with this, as long as Spiderman is SpiderWoman
To be honest, the only time I've really seen a good use of homosexuality, despite my stance one the issue, was in a MLP Fan fic called Fallout Equestria. Anything Mainstream, blows as they usually get it wrong and possibly make things worse for all sides
Spider man is supposed to be about a super hero who is also an average guy with real life problems to deal with. Im not sure how sexuality isnt included in that?
Why can't they make a new superhero that's gay or use one of the already existing gay superheroes ?
yeah, well andrew garfield can go fuck himself.
when will people learn that acceptance=/=assimilation?

gay rights don't exist until everyone is gay

That's it Glaber. You've won. You've hit the absolute limit of being a self-parody, and now there's nowhere left to go.

I've found that unoriginality is a real problem for the movement. Instead of coming up with their own unique words, they take over the word gay. Instead of coming up with a unique symbol they can get behind, possibly with purple and blue, they have to try to assimilate the primary rainbow.
The taking over of the rainbow has actually become more of a problem now as in a sewing group my Mother belongs to, one of the members was working on a project that had the rainbow and another said "Oh, you're one of those people." I'm not sure what happened after that but I think the person who's project had a rainbow was offended.
Part of why I believe the Fanfic Fallout Equestria works is Little Pip is an Original character, and her sexual orientation isn't taking up 90% of the story. In fact, for most of the story she's doing stuff that players of the Fallout games would normally do. Exploring ruins, listening to audio logs, helping inhabitants of the wasteland. In fact, if it weren't for the little nods every so often, you'd forget she's homosexual.
If the movement had more Little Pips instead of trying to convert Spiderman, maybe they'd actually make some real progress in acceptance. (Ironic coming from me.)

If you really think fan-fic writers are better than actual, legitimate writers then you really need to re-evaluate yourself.
because they don't stand out enough unless they explisivly do something.

Which is why it shouldn't be changed at all, because right now comic book writers just downright suck at actually depicting a gay character in any form of subtelty. It's either made a running joke or a full-on annoying character trait (once again, see how rawhide kid turned out).
