Scary to think a single, powerful EMP bomb could basically ruin an entire continent. In many ways, their potential are far greater than even the biggest nuclear bombs.
Except not really because nuclear bombs also have an EMP blast... doesn't it?
Because you need precision engineering to make something really powerful, something your average joe is incapable of. [editline]9th November 2011[/editline]
Except not really because nuclear bombs also have an EMP blast... doesn/t it?
They allow you to take out the whole infrastructure of a country without harming anyone directly.
I think most developed nations already got "e-bombs". I'm pretty sure US and Russia got them. In a declassified 2005 report from China, they stated that they've managed to make such a bomb and I think had scenarios about bombing Taiwan (lol poor Taiwan).
The Russians actually have a system that they can mount on their tanks that uses an EMP to destroy anti tank mines. I remember seeing pictures of Humvees having gigantic rods mounted on the front, I guess it works on a similar principle.
Scary to think a single, powerful EMP bomb could basically ruin an entire continent. One powerful nuclear bomb detonated at high altitude would knock out something like 70% of Earth's satellites over the course of several months I believe. How the fuck is an EMP bomb more powerful than that? And that's just a high altitude nuclear bomb. If you want to deal some serious damage you just drop it on some bitches. That's going to generate much more damage than a regular EMP bomb; I can promise you that. The blast radius would just be way larger and take out infrastructure, regardless if it's designed to withstand EMPs.

And on your point, an EMP bomb would be much more specialised than a nuclear bomb which just gives off an EMP as a side effect.
That's quite freaking cool. I remember seeing pictures of Humvees having gigantic rods mounted on the front, I guess it works on a similar principle.
Those just detect IEDs and mines, they don't actually detonate them

Even the article says "this is the biggest weapon of mass destruction next to a nuclear bomb." an EMP pales in comparison to the potential damage a nuclear weapon can inflict.

Why an explosive? Why not just dump capacitors into a radiating element?
Why an explosive? Why not just dump capacitors into a radiating element?
an explosion is faster and carries more energy, also the Doppler effect happens (waves in front have higher frequency) so it is more of a "slam" of energy as opposed to a relatively slow release.
Why an explosive? Why not just dump capacitors into a radiating element?
compression [editline]10th November 2011[/editline] also above
I'm fairly sure anyone versed in electrical engineering terminology and methodologies could glean more than enough from journals to create one themselves
More like anyone with a knowledge of basic physics. Shit isn't that complicated. Some of the wonkier designs look complex, but upon examination follow the "if we duct tape 50 m80s to each other we'll get one big m80!" school of design. Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure somebody on Wikipedia already made a guide on how to blow shit up what good that the average plumber can understand. Yeah: https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Explosively_pumped_flux_compression_generator Get a middle schooler a skunkworks and an internet connection and you'll probably get a workable design in a week. Might look like a dick though.
Why an explosive? Why not just dump capacitors into a radiating element?
Smaller scale stuff does do this, so you're not too terribly far off with the reasoning.
Who cares about India making bombs, Iran and North Korea are what I really worry about.
Who cares about India making bombs, Iran and North Korea are what I really worry about.
still news
I've always wondered how they made EMP bombs without using nukes.

Nice diagram! I've been wondering how to build one of these for awhile!
If there's a WW3 everybody is absolutely fucked.
Can we seriously stop building weapons.
Am I the only one who thinks an electromagnetic pulse of that strength would be pretty harmful to human brain?
Am I the only one who thinks an electromagnetic pulse of that strength would be pretty harmful to human brain?
it cant really, as we work in a completely different fashion and it is almost impossible to short circuit a human.
I do believe this is India' way of combating their countries awful driving, they'll just fire it at the roads to disable all the cars :v:
If an E-Bomb can be stopped with a simple Faraday cage, what's the point?
Am I the only one who thinks an electromagnetic pulse of that strength would be pretty harmful to human brain?
If such a device was extremely close (a few centimeters), it would probably cause a seizure The brain isn't merely an electrical system, but an electrochemical one
it cant really, as we work in a completely different fashion and it is almost impossible to short circuit a human.
Tasers work pretty well :P
If an E-Bomb can be stopped with a simple Faraday cage, what's the point?
Because you can't fully shield something without making it completely unusable.
Nuclear tampon.
