if you're burning art, books, or historical artifacts because you don't like who made them
you're probably the asshole

"It's gonna happen no matter what" is not an argument and burning of art is not permissible. The bottom line is, they did not own what they destroyed. That makes it illegal and wrong.

You're really with ISIS on this one?
(bear in mind we hooked the Chinese on opium, essentially looted the country for rare artifacts, burned down the Yuan Ming Yuan, seized land by force and bankrupted the Qing state)
Keep in mind that this outraged people in Britain at the time and that the Qing Dynasty was pretty evil and Imperialistic in its own right.

Also "we"? Who are you referring to? Most brits couldn't even vote at the time and even then, the sins of the father are not to be passed down onto the son.
The fact people support doing this, and hating othwrs because of their skin color because of people who did things is the past is scary as fuck.
By destroying history, that shit is lost f o r e v e r. There is NEVER an valid excuse to destroy historical documents. Ever. If we don't know about the evils of the past, how can we possibly learn from them?
Well, those savages aren't going to learn now. Apparently they never heard how Rhodesia/Zimbabwe ended up when they did a comparable thing.
They went in a few decades to what was Africa's most prosperous country, dubbed the breadbasket of Africa, to a country best known for having the biggest joke national value in history, the Zimbabwean Dollar, with a completely broken down infrastructure and non-stop famine because they can't manage the land as well as the white farmers did, which they had murdered and driven out. And their dictator Mugabe is still bragging about how he and his cronies drove out the white people, while his country is in absolute shambles, as he and his cronies haven't done jackshit to keep the land in order. In fact, apart from non-stop famine and widespread crime, they are also headed to a potential massive disaster since the Kariba Dam, build in Rhodesian times, is in the state of collapse, since surprise, surprise, they don't know how to repair it. A dam breach could potentially kill a few million Zimbabweans. Luckily for them, they seem to have found a way to prevent this, by dropping the water levels to 12% of what it used to be. Which in turn not only causes yet another electrical shortage on Zimbabwe's already meagre infrastructure, but also a water shortage in a country that is already starving. The incompetency is off the fucking charts.
Those people really do not fucking learn, do they?
I like how those people that were being extremely racist in the first few pages have just stopped responding to people getting mad at them over it as if ignoring responses means that they weren't said. Fairly typical for racists, actually. Plug your ears, hum, and the opposition fades away

Yeah civilized society really hasn't done all that much for us anyways...
Congrats UCT on making the list of book and art burners, and destroyers of history.
Take your place next to the Nazi Party, the Soviet government and ISIS who have all used these same methods to achieve their ideological goals.
They are idolizing those oppressors.
what fucking definition of "idolize" are you using
what history is being lost by these paintings and statues being destroyed? this is nature. humans being humans. culture is created and destroyed with the changing of the times. its a thing that happens and cant be prevented.
"this is nature"
haven't destroyed any art here if I say so myself, am I a freak of nature or something
I doubt these painting had much significant historical value tbh.
I doubt these painting had much significant historical value tbh.
no excuse to destroy stuff like a savage
I doubt these painting had much significant historical value tbh.
That's not an excuse to burn and destroy art
"this is nature"

He was definitely talking about the individual and not about cultural patterns.
They are idolizing those oppressors.
You, uh, do realise that a portrait was essentially the victorian equivalent of a photo, right?
But I'ma stop trying to understand you right now, the mental gymnastics required to contort my brain into whatever bizarre shape you've twisted yours into will leave me permanently damaged, I think.
That's not an excuse to burn and destroy art
No excuse, but that doesn't make this the atrocity some are claiming.
Awful and disgraceful history or not
YOU DON'T DESTROY HISTORICAL SHIT
I am fucking livid.
I learned my lesson from another thread like this, but yeah, I don't think text can describe how upset and dissapointed I am in this decade so far for how we're letting these people get almost away with this seemingly.
I have a feeling these aren't just protesters, but just like the Fergeson fuckers where they didn't know or care about what the protest was about, they just wanted to break and burn shit for the hell of it.
"this is nature"
haven't destroyed any art here if I say so myself, am I a freak of nature or something
No you are just someone who respects it no matter what material or time period it is.
I don't like certain things but I don't go around burning it like some sort of cunt who thinks he knows better.
No excuse, but that doesn't make this the atrocity some are claiming.
They're purposefully destroying art because of who it was made by/of, how is that not an atrocity??????
victorian equivalent of a photo, right?
Why does anyone need victorian photos of oppressors?
I doubt these painting had much significant historical value tbh.
you don't destroy things you can't replace for no reason
absolutely nothing was gained from the destruction of these paintings, zero people benefited from what happened
the only result, literally the only one, is that we no longer have these paintings.
I doubt these painting had much significant historical value tbh.

Among the works they turned to ashes was a 1993 oil painting by a black anti-apartheid artist, Keresemose Richard Baholo. It was called “Extinguished Torch of Academic Freedom”, one of a series of paintings depicting protests at the university.
Students defaced a statue of Smuts and a bust of Maria Fuller, one of the first four women to attend the university. She enrolled in 1886, when most courses were open only to men. She went on to play a role in opening a women’s hall of residence. She was, however, white.
Beyond the issue of destroying art like a bunch of damn savages, these people also very obviously racist. There is a difference between protesting and illegally ripping historically significant art out of the hands of folks that own it, burning it, and then spraypainting "FUCK WHITE PEOPLE" onto the remaining unmolested work.
I doubt these painting had much significant historical value tbh.
I agree, lets dismantle the Pyramids too. Awful constructions, practically mortared with the blood of slaves (Oh those wacky Egyptian imperialists), no significant historical value or anything to be learned from them.
They're purposefully destroying art because of who it was made by/of, how is that not an atrocity??????
Because "art" is not inherently important. How is that an atrocity?
yeah that'll solve the problem, buddy
Yeah actually it would. Get rid of the people who are causing problems = they're not causing problems anymore.
Why does anyone need victorian photos of oppressors?
We don't but what harm are they really doing by existing?
i'm pretty sure those guys are trolling
Because "art" is not inherently important. How is that an atrocity?
What do you mean it's not important?
No?
Think about all of the imperialism and colonialism.
Ah yes, I too recall reading in the history books where all the whites throughout time and space held a meeting in the great white square and unanimously voted to enslave the blacks. How much better the world would be had they all be slaughtered in that square.
Or maybe the injustices performed then had absolutely fuck all to do with race, beyond being a convenient way for the rich to create this narrative that "no no, see, it's ok because they have a different skin color and thus are inferior to you".
Why does anyone need victorian photos of oppressors?
So all white people are oppressors?
I have a feeling these aren't just protesters, but just like the Fergeson fuckers where they didn't know or care about what the protest was about, they just wanted to break and burn shit for the hell of it.
Where does this feeling come from? This is just a sign of the times. White nationalists say stupid shit like "anti-racist = anti-white" but to some extent its becoming a reality. Its becoming socially acceptable to hate white people because they're white.
