Pope Benedict takes action against child sex abuse in the Catholic Church

I'm not entirely sure but aren't the some of other branches or sects of Christianity (Protestant?) opposed entirely to Catholicism? Anybody else think this might give incentive to such branches/sects to approve, support or otherwise commit pedophilia?
No respectable or normal person enjoys deriving sexual pleasure from children especially when they are exploited by their ignorance of such matters. I can't say that such priests that commit pedophilia have much respect for the pope or the beliefs and ethics of Christianity, if they choose to practice something so backwards and amoral. Predictably, this announcement will have an opposite effect on branches that opposes the pope.
Any church is a failure in all respects if it acts as a preying ground for pedophiles. But, the church isn't exclusively to blame, it's a fucked society.
It disgusts me to know that some priests of the Catholic church will avoid punishment, regardless of this decree.

You act like a dissolution of the papacy would make all Catholics keel over dead.
the statute of limitations should be made indefinite, if the Church wants to improve their image they can't be tokenistic. It is pleasing to see them actually trying to do something though.
Googling around it seems like the statute of limitations is 20 years after their 18th birthday with a chance for extension on a case by case basis.

The Italian ones would :v:
The others would just be outraged.
It's basically saying that the Pope is taking steps to crack down on pedo priests. They're revising the hiring process to weed out potential pedos, and it seems they're going to be more open and honest now about these cases.
It only took them, what, two decades to do this?

When it spends thirty years denying a problem exists and actively defending the criminals behind it, it's worth being skeptical.

Why not?
It's like a bitter-sweet apology.

Why ruin such a long running tradition?
This is like telling criminals to report themselves to the police.
Doubt it will work at all.

Actually it will work, in this case.
Think about it, so far pedo priests were almost immune to justice because their victims would never talk, knowing that the Church would deny everything, and depending on where the Priest lives it's very hard for the legal system to actually reach out to him and give him a proper sentence under religious pressure.
Pope Benedict's message is pretty much "alright don't count on us now". If a pedo priest gets accused of Child Abuse, he will not have any help from the Church (and may even lose his priest rights, or whatever you call those), which will make him completely reachable legally wise. If Priests aren't immune anymore, then people will start talking, and if people start talking, the problem will be solved.
This being said, I am still wondering if those people are pedophiles becoming priests to have some cover, or if it's because they are Priests that they become pedophiles.

maybe we should send an angry letter to every member of the Vatican saying "We're very very angry and you should report yourself if you done anything bad!"
