This is perfect. I'm so glad to know that between all the vastly different political opinions on this site, we can all mostly agree when it comes to the military.
Opinion: Trump should not have picked a general as defense secretary http://www.marketwatch.com/story/trump-should-not-pick-a-general-as-defense-secretary-2016-11-28
Israel’s experience shows retired generals make very bad bosses for the military

Have you even read about Mattis? Also, this is the US, not Israel.
Yes I have. Its a counter point.
Yes I have. Its a counter point.
It's a pretty shitty counter point then, and after reading the article it's an equally shitty opinion piece too. You simply can't draw any good parallels between the israeli and US militaries. The IDF being caught off guard during the yom kippur wars is, to us, largely irrelevant. Our militaries are totally different, they largely serve completely different roles, we may share a few commonalities as does every military. The issues that plague our military are numurous, highly complex, and are not faced by any other military on the planet. By any measure, the past few SecDefs haven't done particularly well either. Your article even states: "Though there have exceptions on both columns of this equation" and if it were any one else (shit bag David Petraeus comes to mind) I'd be more inclined to agree.
Well at least you've got one guy who we can be certain won't take any shit from Trump. One guy will stand up to him, and be forceful with him, and I'm pretty sure this is at least one of the few people to make Trump listen to them.

The US has evolved beyond that.
Good. Torture has never been reliable, people will say anything they think the administerer wants to hear in order to get it to stop rather than actually divulge anything useful.
and yet it took this guy basically telling trump that it doesn't work for him to suddenly say "oh ya i guess it doesn't" of all trumps picks this one is sort of obvious and not really controversial

Cuba says on paper it's a democracy where parties can be voted and chosen! It must be the true paradise! Please. While being an OBVIOUS exaggeration, what he said, it's not far from the truth. And if you didn't to derail the thread, why answer to it? Military dudes from FP: What would Mattis role be? What would he decide or oversee? I would like to know more about this role in the US policy.

As well as directly responsible for implementing any and all of Trumps policies onto the DoD, as he is second to and answers only to The President in terms of military chain of command and is one of the most important cabinet positions a person can hold. He is also 6th in the line of succession in the event POTUS, VPOTUS, Speaker of the House, Senate pro tempore, SecState and SecTreasury die (Mysteriously of course), Mattis becomes leader of the free world. I'd also like to point out he's a man who took another marines duty who was married on Christmas say so he could spend time with his family.

While Dayan holds some responsibiity for that, he also led the IDF to victory in that war. Also, Israel is cutting defense budgets [editline]1st December 2016[/editline]
Israel is a theocracy that still follows a form of Manifest Destiny. I have seen't that many guys like this one.
occupying land it won in a war they won fair and square
Aww, that's nice. Now we're back to the 19th century. India, China, Russia and...ISIS, would love to employ you as a PR guy.
Is this guy basically the modern George S. Patton?
yes. [editline]1st December 2016[/editline]
He is also 6th in the line of succession in the event POTUS, VPOTUS, Speaker of the House, Senate pro tempore, SecState and SecTreasury die (Mysteriously of course)
so as long as it's mysterious, they won't question anything..
yes.
A little more sane, I think. I've mentioned in a previous thread though, some of us in the Army might not like him so much: http://www.businessinsider.com/this-may-be-mattis-one-mistake-2016-6
Trump: 'What do you think of waterboarding?'" Mattis: I've never found it to be useful. I've always found, give me a pack of cigarettes and a couple of beers and I do better with that than I do with torture.'
what does this mean exactly? waterboarding is pussy shit?
what does this mean exactly? waterboarding is pussy shit?
it means torture is a bad method of getting info from people the movies, and hollywood, are largely to blame for this. In reality, Torture doesn't get you actionable intel.
Is this guy basically the modern George S. Patton?
No. Patton was a dick who used his men as a means to his literal glory. This man is a tactical badass, a logistical genius and will put a bullet in your ass if you threaten his proven method of achieving lasting peace.
what does this mean exactly? waterboarding is pussy shit?
Yes, it is pussy shit because it's easy and only makes you feel like you did something because "Durr hurr the bad guys are now hurt, we won. Mission Accomplished". He's talking old style interrogations. Asking thousand of questions until you find what's true and false.
what does this mean exactly? waterboarding is pussy shit?
"You attract more flies with honey than vinegar" essentially. Mattis's full quote mentions using those things to earn a person's trust to cooperate with you. In essence he means torturing a person only makes them tell you what you want to hear in order to make the torture stop.
what does this mean exactly? waterboarding is pussy shit?
In vino veritas, basically, the more relaxed and laid back someone is, they tend to be more willing to discuss things.

Plenty have heard his quote which mags him seem like a war monger, but he's always been willing to try and talk out the issues before going in guns a blazing. He's an incredibly level headed and intelligent man who really is up for trying to win hearts and minds, and unlike some other people he is willing to go face to face with the enemy if need be. It was not unheard of for him to waltz up to the front lines in the middle of combat to direct those under his command to get things done, as well as to meet with the average jarhead and to boost moral. He's really the closest thing the Marines of my generation have had to a Chesty Puller, and In my opinion he's just the man for the job.
