California high school teacher punishes students for saying 'God Bless You'
who the fuck even says 'god bless you' when someone sneezes anyway?
I generally just say "bless you" if someone sneezes and "excuse me" if I sneeze.
The poll they have on the side is ridiculous.
Do you think students should be allowed to say 'Bless you' to the point of disruption?
Yes, if someone sneezes it's common courtesy and our right to say it.
YES, IT'S COMMON COURTESY AND OUR RIGHT TO SAY BLESS YOU TO THE POINT OF DISRUPTION
No, it can get to a point where students just do it to cause a ruckus in class.
NO, STUDENTS SHOULDN'T BE ALLOWED SO SAY BLESS YOU TO THE POINT OF DISRUPTION BECAUSE IT CAUSES A DISRUPTION.
When the plagues arose, most priests started saying God bless you whenever someone sneezed/coughed, as it was a sign of the plague. It caught on and pretty much everyone started saying it.
If someone says God bless you, it's just a way of them wishing you to get better through either natural, or in worse cases, divine ways.
Also, wanted to clear things up a bit. He's saying that he doesn't care about the religious aspect of the phrase; by doesn't care I mean he's indifferent, he's not against religion or that fact that phrase is religious, that is of no concern to him. He's deducting points against people because the students are saying it at inappropriate times, or obnoxiously loudly. Like during a test when someone sneezes, a student will yell, "GOD BLESS YOU!"
It's a case of stupid students doing stupid shit just to piss off their teacher.
That's understandable.
Maybe it's something like one or two assholes kept doing this and the teacher takes action and the assholes get all mad because the teacher was trying to quit them from being loud pricks. Then they report him for that, and he gets in trouble.
Kind of bullshit if that's the case.

Yeah, that actually happened to one of the best teachers I've ever had. He's at some shit school now because some bitch kept reporting him for stupid crap.
His class consistently had the highest reading/writing scores in the state too.
- Snip damned sensationalism -
bless you doesn't necessarily mean it's religious, I'm athiest and even I say stuff like "god dammit", "god almighty", "jesus christ!" but I'm Irish so it's basically part of my language.
I generally just say "bless you" if someone sneezes and "excuse me" if I sneeze.
i just dont say nothin cause it's a sneeze it's not like me or anyone else can help it
"When you sneezed in the old days, they thought you were dispelling evil spirits out of your body," Cuckovich told Fox40. "But today, what you're doing doesn't really make any sense any more."
It's polite.
I'm athiest, I still say bless you when someone sneezes. It's just polite.
And this is what happens when atheism goes too far. I'm all for seperating religion from issues that really don't need it clouding the waters, but actually punishing people for their beliefs is exactly the reason we try to stop it.
And this is what happens when ignorant people generalize all Atheists as punishing people for their beliefs.

Carl Sagan bless you*
I think you should consider the teacher's position too.
Imagine a bunch of teens fake sneezing all day long and everyone saying god bless you.
Taking points for such a trivial matter is stupid though.
Edit:
I can't imagine saying this in my own native language. I would sound like a religious nerd. We actually say something along the lines of "wish you best health" but it's actually condensed to just one word, so i don't know what it originally said. Now you just say "gezondheid" which translates to "health".

I respond to sneezes with sneezes. Can't show fear.

It stems from "Ik wens U gezondheid".
Dane Cook did a routine on the controversy of saying 'God Bless You'
The proposed alternative:
*Atchoo*
Uhh, when you die nothing happens.

Yerhamak Allah is Arabic for God bless you, also said when people sneeze. It's pretty much the same thing.

When did I say they all were? This guy is undeniably doing so, which is why he's a dick. Atheists aren't dicks.

You clearly didn't read the article. You connected dots that weren't meant to be connected. You let wording deceive you. Damn shame these sensationalist headlines.

I admit, I only read to the exact sentence before he said there was no religious reason behind it, though my point still stands even if it isn't related to this discussion.
First comment redacted, second defending it stands.
god bless america
bless you doesn't necessarily mean it's religious, I'm athiest and even I say stuff like "god dammit", "god almighty", "jesus christ!" but I'm Irish so it's basically part of my language.
Some kid thought I was being a hypocrite whenever I said "god dammit" or "jesus christ" since I was an athiest. It's funny because he didn't realize it was just a saying.
He also told another girl to shut up when she coughed in class. He seems much worse than the teacher taking away points from students for saying, "bless you" whenever someone sneezes.
This dickhead could have easily conjured up an argument about sneezing being disruptive as well. I don't think he's very calm or anything because it sounds like he gets annoyed over little shit.
Oh man... Thats a city I was looking at living in... well my parents rather. And that was the school I was looking at going to.
hmmm... maybe my friends were right when they said Will C Wood sucked.
Whoops wrong thread
Haha, suck a dick, guy! I've fully transitioned to "Gesundheit!"
They should say "God Damn you" instead.
Just get everyone in the class to say different religious things, instead.
ACHOO!
"Choose the Right!"
"In nomine patri et filii et spiritus sanctus"
"Today I am a man!"
lose points for being polite?
When someone sneezes the class should just yell "HEY FUCK YOU BUDDY". Instant A+.
What the hell
His excuse is bullshit I've never seen people who sneeze to disrupt a class, because a fake sneeze is fucking obvious
it doesn't even have to be religious, it's just a common term that's lost all religious meaning
He's not doing it out of spite for religion, he is trying to make a point.
"When you sneezed in the old days, they thought you were dispelling evil spirits out of your body," Cuckovich told Fox40.
"But today, what you're doing doesn't really make any sense any more."

A silly point nonetheless, but the controversy is undeserved. He's just a guy who has a silly rule, not some antireligious nutjob.
