Imagine a world where people are forced to buy MS Office *shudders*
Until libre works without any bugs in the formatting and excel tables, people will be forced to buy ms office.
Not to mention that it probably still is as slow as old Open office.
As to robben - I did dislike it a first, but the longer you use it, the faster you feel it is.
To be honest my dislike for OO and in turn libre comes from the time I was forced to use it and had to spend massive amounts of time getting stuff to look like it should.
I'll stick with my current install of OpenOffice, thanks.
That's fine, just release it will never have another update again.
[editline]15th February 2012[/editline]
Also, LibreOffice 3.5 opens stuff faster than 3.4.5
LibreOffice? These free office packages are getting more central-European with each incarnation. Can't wait for LibreBureau Trois-virgule-sept!
I use my browser as a Wordprocessor, HTML&CSS is easy as shit.

SO hardcore
I actually liked the ribbon in Office 2007...
Oh well, Android port, that's all I care
I cant wait for the android port
Is there a beta or anything?
I don't like office 2010 at all though, piece of shit.
Our Computer Knowledge teacher forbade us from using our free version of the office pack we got with our school laptops and forced us to install Open Office.
If I get this I'll probably get an A+
Downloaded it and launched it, looks exactly the same as my old OpenOffice.
You can't access them if your internet is spotty though. A dude in my class tried to present something with google docs and he couldn't get the shitty school wireless to work.
That's just retarded, the only thing libre office or open office have going for them is the fact it's free. If you can get a M$ office suite for relatively cheap (or free), there is no reason at all not to use it.

It's a great thing. If the students know how to use free software then they won't feel compelled to pay for proprietary alternatives which aren't any better.
also please don't do this

But they ARE better. Libre office is a fine alternative if you have no means to purchase MS office, but other than being free, they are nothing compared to MS office.
It's totally retro dude
I'm sure that's a big turn-on for hipsters.

Well, part of the point of these types of classes is familiarizing students with the software. So when they get a job that involves working with a computer, odds are their employer uses Microsoft Office products. While they may function about the same, to the average computer user, the interface isn't the same at all. Especially comparing, say, LibreOffice and Office 2010. How you do something in LibreOffice isn't going to be exactly same as Office 2010 just because of the ribbon interface let alone more technical differences. Those differences may seem trivial to you or me, but for computer illiterates, it can make all the difference in the world.
Remember how up in arms people were when 2007 came out? Notice how people bitch about every miniscule UI change on Facebook and Youtube? People do not handle change very well. At all.

They'd prefer a typewriter though.
So .. this or open office?

This IS OpenOffice, except by name.

Except this is sort of a case between GIMP and Photoshop. To make it even worse, imagine if Gimp supported PSD's but not perfectly and messed up a lot of stuff in them. And PSDs were more or less the only format used.
I tried using the Libreoffice package for a while, it is ok if you just want to type up a document and be done with it, but if you have to collaborate with people using other file formats you will run into issues.
Take for example a presentation we had to give in which each slide woould stay up for 20 seconds, as the file for the presentation had been passed around MS Office & Libreoffice it borked the file showhom and the timer wouldnt work, so I had to give my presentation while holding a phone as a stopwatch, completely messed up my presentations sense of flow.
No shit sherlock of the day:
Libre = free in spanish.
And French.
http://support.google.com/a/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1642623
It's read only. I'm fucking serious.
And word and spreadsheet only.

Libre is 'gratis' in spanish. As in freedom.
HTML5 port? Huh.

Wait.. Two incompatible applications don't work when passing around their files? Dear god!
save as .DOC instead of .DOCX
