The Pentagon's most expensive weapons system is going to spend some time on the bench. The U.S. military on Friday grounded the F-35 fighter jet due to a crack in an engine component that was discovered during a routine inspection in California. The fighter is currently being tested. The Pentagon said in a statement that it was too early to assess the impact on the nearly $400 billion fleet of jets designed for use by the Navy, Air Force and Marines. The program has been beset by cost overruns and various technical problems during development. Currently, there 51 planes in the F-35 fleet.
http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2013/02/22/u-s-military-grounds-f-35-fighter-jets/?hpt=hp_t2
Great program, right guys?
~future generation fighter~ fuck why did we waste so much money
Oh for fucks sake. And Harper went and bought a tonne of those.
Oh for fucks sake. And Harper went and bought a tonne of those.
no he didn't. they want to buy them but everybody else would get pissed and we're already cutting the defence budget. Even the military is saying that they could only buy 1/2 as many bombs because of the cost of the F-35. And Canadian tankers couldn't fuel the F-35 because it isn't compatible, so they would have to outsource air-to-air refuelling on a plane with small fuel tank
Oh for fucks sake. And Harper went and bought a tonne of those.
They went ahead with that? What the fuck What the hell would Canada of all places do with a series of potentially dysfunctional next gen fighters?
They went ahead with that? What other explanation could there be. Any sane politician would buy something cheaper that actually works instead of a F-35.
Hm, I'm behind on the times. Apparently it was scrapped. Thank goodness.
I'm betting Lockheed is bribing them illegally. What other explanation could there be. Any sane politician would buy something cheaper that actually works instead of a F-35.
dood, you don't understand VTOL
If the US cancels, then the Fleet Air Arm will be screwed. Why did MOD think it was wise to sell all the Harriers to the USMC?
Ah, it's normal. Just give the contractor a few billion more and he should have it sort of fixed by the end of next year.
-No F-22 has ever flown a single combat mission -F-22 not obsolete yet -F-22 not useful yet -replacing F-22 with new aircraft already -China being not stupid and building J-15 -Iran builds Qahar -half the payload of F-22 -more expensive than F-22 -engine/structural problems already -wings too short to be good dogfighter -24 million lines of code involved in making the aircraft fly, quite possibly the most complex piece of military hardware ever built
My current theory is that all of the Joint Chiefs got into a government limo and fishbowled it. In their stupor, they came up with a totally fantastic idea to design 1 fighter for all three branches. C'mon guys! I bet it'll be cheaper too! and the F-22 are amazing and a whole lot cheaper, IMO we should be making more of them and retiring our other aircraft.
dood, you don't understand VTOL
Except we would just be buying the A's.
Pretty sure Australia cancelled their order of these..
-Iran builds Qahar
You realize that the Iranian "Qahar" isn't actually a plane yet, right? The model they showed was literally made out of boating fiberglass, with Garmin GPS' along with other basic shit you can get at any milsurp store

Poor guy that did a calculation wrong (or forgot something).
I'm betting Lockheed is bribing them illegally. What other explanation could there be. The military says to contractors "hey, we want this thing" and they submit a budget and concept. The one who says "hey we can do this the cheapest and with more features" gets the contract for the government. Unfortunately for some reason the Military doesn't get on a contractors ass and tell them to fucking bad we're going to someone else.

But thankfully the rest of the government clued in and a shitstorm ensued. Even top air force generals have said that the F-35 isn't the only option, and that cheaper alternatives would serve fine. The conservatives arent even for boosting military spending, I cannot comprehend why they would have such an personal attraction to the F-35, when so far all the side effects of being pro-F35 have been negative for the cons. They're too expensive for us, we're not rich.
Well done America
Ah, it's normal. Just give the contractor a few billion more and he should have it sort of fixed by the end of next year.
WEVE BEEN DOING THAT FOR EIGHT YEARS IN A ROW!
If it's one thing we're good at, it's spending loads of money on our jets but they also last for fucking ever, It'll still pay off in the long run, considering all branches will use it, and a lot of countries will use it
-No F-22 has ever flown a single combat mission -F-22 not obsolete yet -F-22 not useful yet -replacing F-22 with new aircraft already -China being not stupid and building J-15 -Iran builds Qahar -half the payload of F-22 -more expensive than F-22 -engine/structural problems already -wings too short to be good dogfighter -24 million lines of code involved in making the aircraft fly, quite possibly the most complex piece of military hardware ever built
The F-35 isn't replacing the F-22. They fill completely different roles.
but they also last for fucking ever, It'll still pay off in the long run, considering all branches will use it, and a lot of countries will use it
This would normally be true if the jets didn't cost half the national GDP of the countries that want to buy them and they weren't as temperamental as a paranoid bipolar schizophrenic .
Great program, right guys?
The F-16 earned the nickname 'lawn dart' because its fly-by-wire liked to turn into crash-by-wire in its early years. An engine component cracking is fairly minor as far as potential aircraft complications go. These sorts of issues are to be expected with any new, extremely complicated, and high-stress technology.

The F-35 is still pretty innovative if they use it or not, some of the new systems on there are crazy. Among one of the things it can do.
$400 billion
Just let that sink in for a moment
