I know a lot of people here wouldn't understand, but look at it this way. Haiti is a very Christian country. I know religion has many problems, but it is also very good at consoling and inspiring people in times of trouble. Hearing the bible might be the only comfort these people can get right now.
It's primitive. People need to get out of the dark ages and grow out of religion.
It's primitive. People need to get out of the dark ages and grow out of religion.
I love how everyone compares religion to the horrors of the Dark Age. I guess to be intelligent in this world you have to be either Atheist or Evolutionist. Too bad most people overlook the many religious scientists there have been, Newton for example. I suppose he must've not been intelligent either. And don't even mention Milton. He wasn't a good writer and he was dumb because he was religious also. Of course, I'm only following your logic Septok.
religion at it's best

And I find it strange you make a distinction between atheist and evolutionist.

And I find it strange you make a distinction between atheist and evolutionist.
I'm trying to make a point. Apparently, Septok and others that I've seen believe that to be intelligent or logical you MUST be Atheist, which isn't true. It just annoys me that many Atheists insist they are 100% correct, never wrong about anything, and that religion must be wiped out, especially considering I'm religious myself.

Anyway, I hate to break it to you, but you're wrong. Mostly. I guess someone could realize that religion is a lie and still believe it to feel better about dying, but 1) no one falls into this category, and 2) this kind of decision would make me question his/her honesty.
You know, there is plenty of food and water going into Haiti every day. Hell, most of it is sitting in airport hangers waiting for distribution. What is virtually nonexistent in Haiti, however, is faith and hope. Haiti is a very religions country, and maybe these Bibles will help keep the victims' spirits alive and prevent them from going insane. [editline]1[/editline] If 80%-85% of the fucking country is religious, WHO THE FUCK ARE THEY TRYING TO CONVERT???? [editline]1[/editline] Rate me dumb if you could care less about these facts and would rather jump on the "HURF DURF RELIGION IS FOR IDIOTS" bandwagon. :bandwagon:
If 80%-85% of a country is religious do you not think they might already have some sort of knowledge of the Bible? I'm sure priests/pastors/holymen in a country which is vastly catholic aren't in short supply. An enthralling sermon from an enthusiastic priest would do much more for a community than a whiny and patronising electronic voice. And do you realise that Haiti does not have plenty of food and water being distributed round? Most of the critical supplies (IE food and water. Not Bibles, hopes and rainbows) are bottlenecked into Port-Au-Prince due to a lack of transport around a country whose infrastructure has been annihilated. A fraction of the 3 million people who need food and water cannot get it as the trucks carrying supplies rarely make it out of the city. Clogging up trucks with useless lumps of silicon and solder isn't going to help that food and water get where it is needed.

Sure, some use it for the wrong reasons, sure, some are corrupt, but that doesn't necessarily make it a lie. Evolution may have more physical evidence, but no one knows it absolutely, no-chance-of-it-not happened, so in a way, you put your faith in scientific belief, whereas we put faith in religion. As for the rest of what you said, he said religion is a Dark Age-ideal, and that people "must get out of the Dark Age". I take it that he's saying people would be better off/more intelligent without it, though he fails to regard at all other peoples' beliefs or the fact that many religious people are intelligent.
On the moon? Bullshit. Sound waves can't travel through a vacuum.
Exactly what I was thinking.

However, based on my observations I can construct a reality based on deductions and proof and decide to believe things that are likely or beneficial. Religion is not likely, in fact, based on this construct of reality, it is defined as quite the opposite; functionally impossible. As far as beneficial, I guess you could argue religion works there, but like I said, if you know something is impossible, it's hard to believe it, no matter what the benefits. [editline]03:41PM[/editline] Note: I personally would very much argue that religion is on the whole not beneficial.
I agree as posted above. I know many Facepunchers are and have been atheist, which I have been too, but faith can do a lot for morale. It's inspirational. While medicine and other relief efforts are necessary, faith is an uplifting thing. I can no longer relate however, I'm currently low on faith. Also faith is not just about putting complete trust in something you can't observe and waiting for all to be corrected. I was Christian at one point, so I figure I may know something or another about the Bible. Nowhere in the Bible does it say that prayer will fix everything. It tells the believer that they will face hardship. It offers the support of the divine to overcome hardships, not the service of the divine. True Christians follow this.
Unless the Bible is made of food, I'd say Fuck Off, no God is going to rain down food in your area, Only the US Military and a few other real organizations If I hadn't eaten for a week, and only had one bottle of water for the last 3 days, and I saw a Helicopter coming to drop some supplies, and all they drop was a solar powered bible... my Morale would just hit rock bottom

However, that graph fails to encompass those who do both (of which there are plenty)
If 80%-85% of the fucking country is religious, WHO THE FUCK ARE THEY TRYING TO CONVERT????
What is 100 - 85 There is your answer [editline]05:06PM[/editline]
Hwever, that graph fails to encompass those who do both (of which there are plenty)
You pray while standing up?
I bet the bibles cost more money than it cost to feed a family there for a week.
It's primitive. People need to get out of the dark ages and grow out of religion.
That's not relevant right now. Please stop being hostile and condescending to the concept of religion, you're making us look bad. But I still can't escape the feeling there are more practical uses for the money they're spending.
I wonder what how well the sound quality is, it'd be kind of funny if it started warping randomly. "And God said, "Let there be DEATH!"
My calculator is solar powered.
You pray while standing up?
No i moon walk towards the nearest kitchen.

Facepunch doesn't allow Logical responses!!
It's primitive. People need to get out of the dark ages and grow out of religion.
You're talking about a third world country. They don't call them the third world for nothing. What are they supposed to do, say "Oh look, those rich Americans say we shouldn't believe what we want to believe. Fuck God guys?"
Maybe they are edible solar-powered Bibles.
fuck yeah I want solar powered books.
I love how everyone is still waving their dicks around and arguing over who believes in the best god.
I really hope they don't start reading about the time this Jesus dude took just a mere fish and several loaves of bread and somehow divvied them up between 1000s of people.
It'd be cool if every book was this way. In class just turn on the teachers textbook and set it to classroom, insta learning. English class would be a breeze.

Besides, there isn't enough medicine or money to rebuild, so save the money and give it to the Red Cross instead. Saving lives comes first, then God (at least in any logical argument). [editline]06:52PM[/editline]
However, that graph fails to encompass those who do both (of which there are plenty)
Although I doubt the praying portion has any effect on the actually doing portion. For example, a person might make a sandwich and pray for one. He still had to make the sandwich since it didn't assemble itself through his prayers.
How can it broadcast the bible on the moon if there's no atmosphere on the moon?
They spent thousands of dollars manufacturing, buying and shipping BIBLES. That is downright shameful.
