I wasn't going to post in here again but I'm going to reply to this because I know you'll give it some thought rather than kneejerking- My one and only issue with the concept of a national gun registry is that, as we've seen in several states now, registration leads to confiscation in every case so far. They will get gun owners to agree to support the law by saying it'll be illegal to confiscate firearms under that law, then after a couple years they amend the law to make it legal to use the registry to confiscate, and then they go door to door collecting all the scary black guns. This has happened in NY and a couple other states I can't think of off the top of my head. The Constitution is literally meaningless in this country so we can't rely on the second amendment as a fallback against confiscation. That's why I'm opposed to the registry. If it could be guaranteed that a registry cannot be used as a shopping list for mass confiscation, then I'd be all for it, because I can see the benefits of having one. Unfortunately I've also seen law abiding gun owners criminalized for owning legal firearms when laws are changed suddenly in anti-gun states.
Doesn't the FFL process act as a registry of sorts, since it is kept on record?
Doesn't the FFL process act as a registry of sorts, since it is kept on record?
It's not a centralized record, they could form one on recent sales from it but I think FFL records are only required to be kept for 10 years. Most of my guns are antiques obtained through private sale, so they wouldn't be in a registry formed from that.

Ten years is a bit long in my opinion though.
Apparently dude's being chased
Always some fucker trying to bring up gun control. Shut the fuck up. Two people are dead, and nothing you propose that has any possibility of working in the US would've stopped it. This is very rare in the US, now fucking stop it. Hopefully they catch the guy soon, seriously shouldn't have watched that clip though. Fuck, that is fucking terrifying and sad.
BBC Breaking ticker just said he appears to be a disgruntled former employee of the station, but still unconfirmed. EDIT: Bit behind.
The people love guns in our country and will come up with any reason to keep hold of them. The bill of rights was passed in 1791, and with its second amendment came the right to keep and bear arms. This amendment was created for the purpose of having a well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free state. This amendment was relevant in the time it was passed due to the violent world that Americans lived in at the time, protection from the elements of an evolving frontier. Nowadays, our military in the strongest in the world, frontier protection is not longer a concern. Violent crime is very high in our country, our prisons are full of people for violent crime, our police forces are armed to the teeth. This amendment is a relic, that many people who really love guns, have been raised near and appreciate guns cling to, despite its actual necessity or healthiness for our society. I'm not trying to bash gun owners, my father and myself own and shoot guns, but even I think a lot of the gun violence in this country is due to the ridiculous ease of acquisition. Mental health is a root cause of the problem, but our current gun laws are also an accessory to their crimes. Addressing one and not the other just seems illogical.
Watch the news, take a drink every time they say "disgruntled employee", die of liver failure
Watch the news, take a drink every time they say "disgruntled employee", die of liver failure
hahahaha
Yup. 4473 records are kept usually, and sometimes it's refereed to as the hidden registry. The only difference is that most files cannot "legally" be pulled up unless a warrant for arrest is issued, and even then a 4473 can only tell you so much. Yeah, you know if the person purchased a firearm at some point in his or her life, but at the same time that's all you know. You don't know if they still own XYZ firearm, if they own any private sales, scratched firearms, or just build a firearm from the numerous build kits on the market. At this moment in time, the 4473 is only good for gauging what someone might have or where a firearm came from.

We still live in a violent culture. There are ~300 million weapons in circulation. You can't ban them. Mental health is one of the main causes of violent crime. As is gang activities, drugs and other illegal activities. They would use other means to kill if they didn't have guns.
Man, you have to be seriously fucking ~disgruntled~ to shoot ex-colleagues.
This is very rare in the US, now fucking stop it.
And it's significantly rarer everywhere else in the developed world. Maybe we should try to learn from these things instead of ignoring it because the US is too gun obsessed.
and it's significantly rarer everywhere else in the developed world
Murder still happens, people kill people regardless of the weapon used.
Watch the news, take a drink every time they say "disgruntled employee", die of liver failure
I agree, but I can't help but notice this photo pairs up with the shooter so accurately. supposed Facebook photo of her friends or colleagues Photo of shooter The man in the centre has the same looking facial hair in the photo of the shooter, same skin colour, same hair and face structure. I'm not trying to point fingers or call down judgement because in all honesty nobody knows at this point, this is just a speculation just judging by the low resolution image we were given.
no, it's not "almost fine". there is no way to track a gun unless it's an NFA gun outside of what, cali, NJ, and NY? the "you can't buy it from an ffl" point is moot, there are so many other ways to get them. norway has over 2,2 million guns, this is a country of just barely 5,1 million people. 22/7 happened because the police intelligence agency were lazy fucks and didn't do their jobs. he was to be stopped from buying guns, but as the PST didn't react he was allowed. what about the hundreds, thousands of gun homicides in the US every year? can you fix that by slapping a big fat band-aid marked "MENTAL CARE" onto the dead people?
We have an estimated 281 million people in the US combined with an estimated amount of 280-300 million guns, of course we're going to have higher homicides than you guys do.

Guns aren't a toy, Agent, stop acting like they are. The Charlestown shooting happened because of a dealer who ignored the background checking, the kindergarden shooting happened because THE GUY HAD ACCESS TO GUNS to kill people. Will you stop being delusional for personal needs ?

Europeans simply don't understand the different culture/dynamic in the US. So stop trying to argue our gun laws until you actually live here.
No no no no don't start this
What are you talking about? He looks pretty fucking similar to the image of the shooter.
Video unfortunately doesn't show his face clearly at all, although this is a shopping centre so he may have been caught on CCTV.
Actually it does.
What are you talking about? He looks pretty fucking similar to the image of the shooter.
Because this happened with the Tsarnaev brothers. People saw a photo and immediately began an internet-wide hunt for someone that was completely innocent
Wow, a fancy graph suddenly proves a point. Get out of here.
Stop trying to argue and change US gun laws when you're not from the US and have no clue how things operate here.

Now I know it's unscientific but my conclusion from experience is that guns do not cause people to commit crimes. Did you know the commonly reported gun crime statistic includes such heinous crimes as improper transportation? And the more specific violent gun crime rate includes suicides and poaching of animals? The statistics are warped for the purpose of demonizing guns and gun owners. The real numbers are pretty close to everyone else's.
Because this happened with the Tsarnaev brothers. People saw a photo and immediately began an internet-wide hunt for someone that was completely innocent
I was just commenting on the similarities. Don't make a mountain out of an ant hill.
