AMD Throws in the Towel: No More CPUs (APUs and GPUs Only)
Yeah, but they're Xeons which are more expensive. I know I have 2 of them, couldn't eat any take away food for 5 weeks.
Not really, I'm getting an AMD FX-8320 which is only 140 bucks and it has 8 cores.
anybody with a finger on the pulse of desktop/laptop computer had to have known that this was coming inevitably. AMD has been slowly ramping down their CPU production in the last 2-3 years
Same with the rig I'm posting on.
Ditto.
Intel and AMD are the last CPU producers for desktops. IBM left in the 80's, NexGen was absorbed by AMD, Cyrix went out of business in the 90's.
They're the last producers for the current standards, which doesn't imply a monopoly. What we could see is the ATX / standard CPU (AM3+, 2011, other cpu sockets) become specific to Intel, and then have a more open motherboard standard with other sockets from other manufactures.
Hooray for another round of massive Intel price hikes just like when Bulldozer was declared DOA.

That could kill Microsoft, I don't think they'd let that happen.
I will probably get an i7 earlier then, Intel fucks the price here every week, this will just make it a far lot worse.

They're already developing for ARM, and that's most likely what's going to start popping up if I'm right; so I could see MS being ok with it.
I'd personally love to see good PowerPC come back for PCs, love/hate relationship, but damn good CPUs.
I call BS. AMD still has an htpc and workstation market.
prepare for an ARMed revolution!
don't kill me.
You guys do know what APUs are, right? They're a CPU + GPU on the same die
i.e. what Intel has been making for the last ~3 years or so.
Basically, AMD are no longer making just CPUs, now when you buy one you get a GPU included so that it doesn't have to be bundled on the motherboard.

I literally just bought an AMD chip and motherboard on friday >_>

Which I don't want because those have issues in of themselves.

Or it could mean soundcards, aka Audio processing units.

Sounds like a toaster oven to me.
Remember the pentium 4 era? Power hungary and hot cpus that only marginally improved the performance. Then AMD came out with their athlon cpus and curb stomped them.
Willamette was a huge letdown for Intel too though. They hit a rather bad thermal barrier which meant they couldn't run them at the 4-5ghz they were proposing (and they were pairing them with one of their WORST chipsets and RDRAM). Also yes, the Athlons were curbstomping that core mercilessly. I have no sympathy for it.
Sure, when Gallatin was released the P4 was the hottest and most expensive chip out there but a P4 3.2 HT could outperform the Athlon XP 3200+ by a decent margin, it would just cost you an extra $200.
I've seen a road map that say we should have 10 GHz CPUs by now and other which say we should CPUs with more than 6-cores.
You accidentially a verb and a plural.
Hopefully NVidia jumps in to fill the void.
I don't think anyone wants a CPU that catches fire when trying to calculate 1 + 1 :v:
And I was just planning to upgrade my rig, but I wasn't expecting I'd have to get a whole new motherboard in the process. Looks like that's gonna' have to change.
this can't be true, even though amd cpus get terrible reputation, i do not regret purchasing my fx 6300. shit worked flawless
No way I am changing motherboards after my recent upgrade, I spent a heap on the new motherboard

They're physical cores, not logical ones. It gets more complicated than that, but they are all basically cores.

If you understand that, you'll understand what I mean.
Won't Intel be forced to separate in the U.S. because of monopoly laws?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breakup_of_the_Bell_System
It'd be more than likely a subject to hearings, and if they do split up intel, we might see an innate increase in viable alternatives.
Don't worry guys I'm sure Razer will save us
Also, It's not the death of their CPUs technically since they'll be still coming out with APUs. It just means intel will have a technical monoply in enthusiast catagories

They could have an insanely awesome name for their CPUs.
Blade, Edge, etc.
This is what I get for holding onto my 960T waiting for a steamroller FX cpu.
I'm pissed because when I last upgraded my computer I stuck with AMD because I was banking on them pulling through, but then I get this shit which is like a spit in the face.
I don't know what to do now. Spend even more money on another motherboard and another cpu I suppose.
Prices aren't the only problem now, Intel has less reason to keep making better desktop chipsets now.
I dunno. With AMD and nVidia still competing in video cards, they sort of need to keep improving CPU's to keep up with technology and not cause a worldwide bottleneck.

Man are AMD lucky they bought ATI.
I dunno. With AMD and nVidia still competing in video cards, they sort of need to keep improving CPU's to keep up with technology and not cause a worldwide bottleneck.
We could easily have a problem there anyways. They would probably just make it barely fast enough to contain a bottleneck.
Not a fan of AMD. I don't use AMD anything, I just have always preferred Intel and Nvidia in my building experience, but that isn't really the point, regardless of what I use, I like to have competition in the scene, it forces better products at better prices. We are just going to have to wait for more official announcements and for some time to pass though in order to know what this really means for the scene.
To clarify, it's not that I think AMD are bad or anything, it's just preference really, not like there is this massive gap in quality, I don't believe that for a second. Small differences most of the time.
the latest batch of CPUs have actually been pretty solid
Solid sure, but inferior to Intel by quite a bit.
