Literally fucking furious, how can someone knowingly and willingly get in the way of so much wonderful progress
Literally fucking furious, how can someone knowingly and willingly get in the way of so much wonderful progress
Such is life in the Zone. The Zone giveth, and taketh away.
Literally fucking furious, how can someone knowingly and willingly get in the way of so much wonderful progress
It makes twelve guys in a boardroom richer.
They didn't for the patriot act, they didn't for the legalization of gay marriage, they didn't for anything the NSA has ever done, they didn't for anything in the past decade. Why would anyone start over this?
Because people would just turn on Netflix and forget about all those other things. Now they can't.
And exactly no one should be surprised. This is exactly the sort of thing that people said would happen if net neutrality ever failed for some reason.
hi hello we can't just change the rules on content providers that easily all you people saying "dumb pipe dumb pipe" search engines are subject to the same rules as verizon if FCC said "dumb pipe" google's entire unique selling point about tailored search results is gone
Because people would just turn on Netflix and forget about all those other things. Now they can't.
Entertainment is the only thing that keeps the population in check.
I could very easily see this leading to the ISPs getting some anti-trust lawsuits very soon. If ISP's start throttling connections they can literally kill any online business that doesn't pay them for high bandwidth alocation. Hell they could kill business's that are in competition with them if they desire.
Entertainment is the only thing that keeps the population in check.
Panem et circenses, people. Nobody likes it when their entertainment or food supplies get cut off.

Because I have no idea how a search engine and broadband infrastructure would fall under the same law.
Got a source on that? Because I have no idea how a search engine and broadband infrastructure would fall under the same law.
i can't find it right now but iirc it has to do with the way they are defined as content providers blame the fcc for having stupid regulations
Something about telecom companies being classified as "Common Carriers" when the FCC isn't able to enforced rules against them. What they can do though is reclassify telecom companies as "Information Services", which they can regulate.
If they're allowed to get away with this for more than a week or so, AT&T is going to start doing it too.
ATT is already installing the throttles.
The world is running into a new dark age where man wont be free, but controlled by greedy, wrinkly old men. This is just too fucking dark for me.
any armed militia uprising would have 100 atrocities committed against them before they could even leave their homes. a civil war would not end well for us civilians
And that's exactly how those in power want it.

They'll charge access for certain sites, and good fucking luck to anyone trying to work independently online. Their website will get lost if they can't afford the status perks of a speedy website. The opportunity otherwise open to ANYONE online will just fucking evaporate. The ISP's haven't had to compete for years. Every area has coverage by one or two providers, and otherwise, tough shit. They basically have a monopoly and can treat the customer how they like. They've refused to build the type of fiber networks that would expand their services appropriately, because they're all complacent with keeping to their own corners and not dealing with actual competition while they suck their subscribers dry. So Google will have to use their nigh unlimited fucking resources to offer the same services under different rules? Boo the fuck hoo. They're smart fuckers, they're resourceful fuckers. They'll find a way, or someone else will. Because then people will have to fucking COMPETE again.

Reclassify ISPs as common carriers first, content providers second. Boom, 50% of the problem solved (enforcement and compliance is the rest) in a way that shouldn't affect Google, other than Google Fiber, unless the FCC decides that everything Google has to be common-carrier because a small part of it is. And if that happens, the entire place goes to shit and we can blame the FCC for two decades of incompetence in this area.

Wait, they're throttling everything going to AWS? Oh man, I can't even imagine the faces of the guys at Dropbox right now.
Wait, they're throttling everything going to AWS? I don't know if they're blocking to JUST the CDN (Cloudfront) or the whole AWS infrastructure. Cause if they are even Facepunch is going to be affected (Last I checked it runs on Amazon Elastic Beanstalk and RDS). All they have to do now is hit Akamai CDN and around half the big sites are going to be loading impossibly slow.
Im glad my city has it's own provider. Charter and Comcast were shitheads to me in the past
Wait, they're throttling everything going to AWS? I could imagine Netflix has some lawyers to call upon, and they are probably not alone
They didn't for the patriot act, they didn't for the legalization of gay marriage, they didn't for anything the NSA has ever done, they didn't for anything in the past decade. So in some ways it might have more than an impact.
The world is running into a new dark age where man wont be free, but controlled by greedy, wrinkly old men. This is just too fucking dark for me.
What, just now? That's basically how it's been since forever.
Huh. Using that Net Neutrality Test site thing, it seems none of my connections to AWS servers goes above 5.25 MB/s, whereas non-AWS servers peaks at 11.33 MB/s so fuck you fairpoint.
Again, in areas where there's only one ISP, what are you going to do but either take it up the ass or go without? Last month, my power company DOUBLED their rates. Reason? Because they just fucking can. What's anyone going to do, go without power? I still say the stars on our flag should be changed to dollar signs
I'm glad I live in a state that forces competition and multiple power companies to exist to prevent this kind of monopolistic action from happening with utilities (sadly ISP's aren't under this).
The world is running into a new dark age where man wont be free, but controlled by greedy, wrinkly old men. This is just too fucking dark for me.
Not to burst your bubble or anything, but that's how it's been for decades, if not centuries. In recent times, our overestimation of just how important age is regarding a candidate for leadership has led us to being swamped with out-of-touch, self-serving egotistical shitheads in politics. Also, the rise of corporations has led to rampant corruption and greed, which seeps into literally everything and taints it so that all that matters is the money. Mind you, the state of things as they are now, with out-of-touch living scrotums running things and fat, greedy bastards living in luxury while the normal and poor unknowingly rot together is nothing new. The old days of kings and nobles were the original version of this scheme, but not the most powerful version, since the people they were screwing had the possibility of killing the bastards and being rid of them at least temporarily. The modern day version is far worse, since an increased population on more land means more "kings" to run it all and more "nobles" to feed off of the unfortunate. Improved technology and more control for both leaders and the rich also means it's damned hard, if not fully impossible, to take the old and less-than-glamorous route of killing off the problem people. So yes, the world is run by greedy, wrinkly old men with all of the wealth tucked under their flappy asses. That's pretty much how it's always been, in some form, but nowadays it's practically impossible to get rid of the bastards, regardless of the method. Peaceful protest, political/social/economic manipulation, all-out combat, none of these methods could fully clean the corruption. At the rate things are going, and with the sheer untouchability and number of these greedy wastes of oxygen, it's going to take either an apocalypse or a miracle for them to truly fall from power. Until said miracle/apocalypse occurs though, I suggest getting used to this bullshit, because it's been around for a very long time and isn't going anywhere soon.
i dunno guys i've had FiOS Quantum for about two years now and i have watched netflix almost every night since then and i haven't noticed a slowdown, really. the first 45-60 seconds of a show might be low quality but it boosts up after that and is fine for anything after that small buffer zone [editline]8th February 2014[/editline] i should clarify that i also have FiOS Quantum 75/25 plan, maybe that makes a difference
Speaking of which, remember when that one douche from Nestle said that companies should start privatizing access to public or natural water sources for profit? People ripped into him. That was a hypothetical and yet I clearly remember people refusing to address him as a person, calling him "it" and saying he just forfeited his own humanity and demanding someone "destroy [assassinate] the defective unit" because he dared suggest taking a basic resource openly available to all and try to turn it into yet another corporate asset; monetizing it and deny people access to it unless they pay up. Only this time it's not hypothetical.
In this corner, someone stating with complete sincerity that companies regulating a corporate-built, corporate-run communications network used by private citizens primarily for entertainment is analogous to privatizing natural formations critically necessary for people to live.
The world is running into a new dark age where man wont be free, but controlled by greedy, wrinkly old men. This is just too fucking dark for me.
And in this corner, someone saying that companies making some websites slower is leading to a fucking new world order. This kind of ridiculous exaggeration that makes net neutrality advocates look like a bunch of Internet-obsessed wackos is exactly why most people haven't been taking the issue seriously.
