I remember reading an article on why immortality would suck. The part of your brain that handles time and such degrades over time, so eventually you won't have any memories of anything, won't know what's going on, and will literally only live in the moment for billions of years until eventually the sun does that expanding thing, and you'll just forever float in space with no memories or anything at all. So yeah, there's kind of a reason people die.
I'm sure if we could find a way to live forever, we could also find a way to solve that problem as well. Hell, it might be as simple as snorting stem cells like cocaine.
If this actually happens, awesome.
You and I could get shots together. You know, holding arms.
In the 70s, they thought flying cars would be commonplace by now. They aren't

I have the odd feeling we'll all end up like the Borg. RESISTANCE IS FUTILE!
I don't want to live forever...That would suck.
They would have to give everyone it at the exact same time to stop violence.
We won't live past December 2012 anyway /sarcasm hope they stick to this though. [editline]09:07PM[/editline] although....
This will cost millions of dollars to get implants though I doubt its just get your free Immortality here! That is if its true, I would laugh to see stuff like Organ Updates and Computers implanted in your eyes.
I doubt I'll live long enough to see it happen. :( Seriously though, I don't like the idea of living as a cyborg.
This does sound awesome, but what about overpopulation?
In the 70s, they thought flying cars would be commonplace by now. They aren't
In 1899, Nikola Tesla sparked the ideas of possible wireless communication beyond audio; pictures, moving pictures, and data.
Aging is a gene "hardwired" into our DNA. We only age because our bodies evolved to age. Take a look at some turtles (and parrots), they live well over 100 years quite often. It's doesn't have anything to do with how their bodies are shaped or work, it's simply because they age slower. In theory, all geneticists have to do is remove the aging gene from people. Obviously it's more complicated by that, but immortality (in a form) is possible.

I honestly wouldn't mind living forever... I would have enough time to do everything I ever wanted to do and them some. They should at least have an anti-immortality incase people need to/ want to die.
In the 70s, they thought flying cars would be commonplace by now. They aren't
In the 50's, they thought you'd never be able to fit a computer into just one room
I'd love to live longer, not interested in becoming a cyborg though. I like my squishy human body.
I'd rather die than become a piece of wrinkly skin.
Headline should read: Doctor is Retarded
In the 70s, they thought flying cars would be commonplace by now. They aren't
Plus, it's not that we don't have the technology to make flying cars, we just have other reasons why we don't have flying cars. That's kind of hard to word. Here are some problems we would run into with flying cars being common: Terrorism, flying licenses and training, vehicle maintainence, air traffic control, and fuel. People would be flying cars into buildings all the time, training for flying these vehicles would be very long and strenuous therefor making it more difficult for more people to get a license to fly these cars, unreliable vehicles would be extremely dangerous to everyone, organizing millions of people flying around in the sky isn't an easy task, and fuel (self explainatory). Basically my point is, just because something that was said before doesn't mean it SHOULD be like that today. We may have the technology, but sometimes there is just too many issues that aren't technology related.
Maybe someone will come along and teach us how to love, just like hugh.
Immortality in 20 years! (Valve Time)
Obtain Immortality Kill everyone Achieve perfection
For all we know we're complex AI inside of a game, so in a sense are we not already in Virtual Reality?
Get Existentialism out of here boy, this be a science thread.
I want to be a great sage
20 years eh? I'd totally do it I'd love to be able to sit around and laugh at people dying while I sit ontop of my nanomachine powered throne.
I'd do it. Instantly. I'll be at the front of the queue when they need volunteers to test this. Also, Pandora's Star by Peter F. Hamilton has a lot of this sort of stuff in it; everyone lives their lives trying to pay for their next 18-month rejuvenation treatment, after which they emerge back in their early twenties, go on a hormone-fueled sex rampage in a club called "Silent World", then get on with their lives to pay for their next rejuve treatment. It's a good read. [editline]07:03AM[/editline]
They would have to give everyone it at the exact same time to stop violence.
They wouldn't be giving people it, rest assured, this would cost a ton and would be the basis for a new economy based around people trying to get their next hit of immortalilty.
Ye, no.
Cells deteriorate over time.
They deteriorate because they are meant to deteriorate. Besides, most cells in the body are ones that can be regenerated.
They deteriorate because they are meant to deteriorate.
Yeah, he really didn't read the OP...they deteriorate, but the nano-bots will replace and rebuild cells.
