the whole nanobots thing doesn't make much sense; it probably won't be feasible for long after 20 years. I'm talking about a less fictional way to achieve immortality.
how are they going to make a brain
Kind of reminds me of people back in the day thinking the future would be enormously advanced, technology-wise So where's the flying cars and mars bases and shit that we were supposed to have in like, the 80s
Immortality is pointless when the worlds going to end in 2012
Kind of reminds me of people back in the day thinking the future would be enormously advanced, technology-wise So where's the flying cars and mars bases and shit that we were supposed to have in like, the 80s
Not to forget the hover tech, 3D holograms, self-lacing shoes, and all that stuff forseen for 2015 in Back to the Future 2. Although one way to ensure immortality would be constructing Universal Constructors to rebuild the body from matter, and create some kind of energy cloud to merge with the human conciousness, carrying the "spirit" to the new body upon death. Although this technology would probably only be used for corporations to ensure the near-infinite shelf-life of their soldiers...

I don't want to live forever, but i don't want to decide when to die either. With this "tech" however, it sounds as though we'd live healthier as a result, which would be beneficial to us.
Organisms die so there can be an equilibrium in the environment. Look at the amount of damage we can cause with a finite life, now imagine how bad things will get if we aren't working against the clock. Immortality will just kill us quicker in the end.
Hm, virtual sex, I predict the human race will end within 1 generation of that technology being available, assuming it comes before immortality.
I sure hope so. I think we should stop being afraid of such enhancement and stop fearing that they will "deprive us of our humanity". The will to improve and make things better with ourselves is what makes us human. I believe being human is about looking at nature and simply not being satisfied, and saying "I can do better". It is what seperates us from the other forms of life on this planet. Sure some would call it playing "God", but I think getting to the point where we can play "God" should be our ultimate goal.
except for the whole part where genetic engineering in a capitalist society will create a massive social class gap and will cause immense ethical dilemmas if it ever comes to that. Also ever heard of the saying absolute power corrupts absolutely? Besides if you aren't at least a millionaire you wont get any of this for another 50 years if they even come out with that technology in the next 20. Imagine a world where the most powerful people were also literally the most powerful people. What's to hold them back from turning it into a dictatorship or aristocracy?

Yes! Now our population problems will be even bigger! People like dictators and shit can live forever!
20 years Valve time.
could the people who don't want to live forever explain why?
have you ever talked to someone who's over 80? Yeah, most of the time they're pretty tired with life and don't really see any point in living any longer.
So, we get to be god ourselves? Awesome.
I'm still waiting for them to be able to grow new body parts...
This will cost millions of dollars to get implants though I doubt its just get your free Immortality here! That is if its true, I would laugh to see stuff like Organ Updates and Computers implanted in your eyes.
They can't make people pay for it.. :3: If someone has that power while millions of others don't then fuck knows what would happen.
Have fun with overpopulation, suckers! Not relying on oxygen sounds pretty cool though, I guess colonizing the galaxy isn't too far away. Even nanobots have limits. [editline]09:56AM[/editline]
Yes!
Anyone remember the Fountain of Youth from ~500 years ago? We still haven't found it, so I don't think we'll be immortal in 20 years.
That's because the fountain of youth is a retarded myth, and this is science. I mean SCIENCE! :science:
Main question is, if you had the ability to, would you do this?
Hell yes. Also it'd be nice to have a good kick in the balls for all previous generations by not dying. But I won't hold my breath on it coming in 25 years.
I say bullshit
Man if this stuff happens, i want the nanobots in my head to say MAXIMUM SPEED when i run
I shall live forever.
To us simple, mortal humans this may be a bit hard to grasp. But once we’ve reached Perfection and Singularity and Oneness and all that blah blah, we will have no goal in life. Yes, we will go out and discover the Universe. But after a while, we will have seen it all. With our mortal bodies gone, we will have all the time of the Universe. We will know every corner of the Universe and say: so what? Why search any further? To an intelligent cloud of smoke particles, searching every corner of the Universe will make as much sense as examining every blade of grass on Earth makes to us. So there you have it. You’ve become a God-like purple space cloud, but now you find that it is soooooo depressing. And in fact, it’s even worse than that. Once we will become machines, our processing speed will increase hugely. Simply put, we will think bloody fast. Within a split second, we will realize that our existence, literally, has become useless. A split second later, we will realize it’s best if we didn’t exist. To a Purple God Cloud suicide will be as self-evident as tossing away a used scrap of paper. As logical as getting off a train that has reached its final destination. And the final destination is what we will have reached: the endpoint of evolution.
In the end, nature always wins.
Nanobots? Three words: Electro Magnetic Pulse.
They can still die from getting shot you know. Even nanobots have limits.
Then you're not immortal so thread title fails.
This means infinite gamin'. Woo!
This means infinite gamin'. Woo!
Strangely I thought the same thing :saddowns:
fuck I would've ages by 20 years!
