Isn't it the down arrow on the title bar?
The only real UX issue I have with Unity is the menu bar working like OS X, only worse..
I might get this.
Yoy cant change the position of the dock, and of course they put it on the side vertically instead pf horizontally, when monitors are so mich wider than taller :downs:

It still has Metro
I run Windows 8 on two of my computers.
My laptop is a convertible tablet with a touchscreen. I'll occasionally use metro apps on it, and doing so is a pleasure. The laptop shipped with Windows 7 and Windows 8 made using the touchscreen even in non-Metro programs way more pleasant. Everything is snappy and responsive.
A rarely talked about feature of Windows 8 is that re-orienting the screen is way faster than Windows 7, which is super helpful.
My desktop has no touchscreen so I never use anything metro. In a whole day's use, I see the start screen for a cumulative 20-30 seconds. I hit the start key and type what I want and go, same as the start menu. In fact, I'd say that if you blindfolded me and sat me down in front of computers running windows 7 and windows 8, I could open the same program with the same keystrokes.

But it has booting to desktop and a start menu.
And regardless, I still want them to bring the Program Manager back.

Oh yeah I forgot about that, I knew there was a reason I used KDE.
But it has booting to desktop and a start menu.
No, it doesn't. It may have booting to desktop and a start screen.
No start menu. That isn't coming back in Windows 8 any time soon.
Don't really see how the start menu is any different here than it is in 7, except that it takes up a full screen.
And regardless, I still want them to bring the Program Manager back.

I wouldn't really mind that.
It doesn't take up my whole screen, at least when I used Windows 3 a virtual machine at 640 x 480.
I wonder it Canonical has gotten to the point that they've done more harm than good for Linux, like going back in time to stop their existence would leave Linux better off.
No. Like it or not, they've made things a lot better for Linux as a whole. They've just made some crappy decisions as of late.
But it has booting to desktop and a start menu.
the Start Screen, called Metro
the MaxofS2D is the only one who said start menu, the article did not
If the Charm Bar worked like the start button, that'd be really cool. I hate how much it takes to get to the shut down button. Before it was just click the start button, then click shut down.
I quite like win8 as you may know, but one thing I can't stand is how the search isn't unified like in win7. it means there's a few extra keystrokes needed to select the right search category where 9 times out of 10 the right result would have been at the top in a unified system anyway

I just.. have you people actually used Windows 8? Here's two screenshots of my PC that are going to blow your fucking minds.
You'll need to start at picture 1:
Right here.
This shows the Windows 8 desktop. Notice how it looks the same as the Windows 7 one (hint - that's because it is the same).
Then, the Start Screen appears. Notice how it's not full of W8's bullshit Metro app crap. This is because I spent more than 15 seconds using the operating system. I have removed all of the useless rubbish which the OS does not actually need to be just as useful, if not more so than W7.
Here's the start screen.
Everything in a box here is available from the desktop in two clicks. Windows 8 has this fascinating feature called customization. I can put whatever the hell I want in those boxes.
I can even add a reboot tile, and give it whatever icon I want.
I might even keep it there, I like it.
So whats the lesson learnt here? Learn your subject matter before you start bashing your elbows onto the keyboard.

I do agree that the shut down command shouldn't be so annoying to reach, no average user knows how to make a shortcut on the start screen and I just can't be arsed

it actually puzzles me that people are grasping at straws so much to hate on Win8 you start acting like you can't just alt-f4 a couple times/click three times to shut down/push the fucking button on your computer, and instead blame it on bad design
shutting down isn't something you do every five minutes and need a one-click shortcut to.

i like windows 8 - have you not seen me defending it in practically every thread
but for the sake of balance, and because the UI has a few glaring flaws mostly related to the charms bar being a bit awkward, yes the shutdown command is a bit annoying to use with just the mouse. yes I know about alt-f4 but the power menu should be in a slightly better place, maybe available below the user picture in the start screen
it IS unintuitive - an option that used to be in prode of place on the start menu is now buried within a submenu of the charms bar
The one thing I hate about Windows 8 is the extra charm bars on the left and right. They're awful and unnecessary. I turned them off with StartIsBack. I don't think Windows 8 needs three docks on the screen.

Alt-F4 on the desktop isn't exactly intuitive. The average user is very unlikely to get the idea of "hey i wonder what happens when i alt-f4 my desktop!", and so the only way they know how to shut down the computer is through Ctrl+Alt+Delete (maybe) or the Charms bar (or the power button but not everyone thinks of that either).
Personally I would have put the shutdown button in that menu that pops up when you click your name in the Start screen. Log out's there, user switching's there, why not put shut down there too?

I think that the start screen is fine to use with a mouse and keyboard and I really like using it, the charms bars feel reallty awkward to me though, you're not alone.

Sorry, how is it difficult to reach? It's right there, on the start screen. It's two clicks. It is demonstrably not difficult to reach.
An average user knows how to type the words "add shutdown to windows 8 start" into Google and click on the first link, and follow exceedingly simple on screen instructions.

My cup holder stopped coming out when I push the button!
If that was true I might possibly upgrade, I don't like having to redownload everything and get it all back though, not sure how to get around that.

Use SeaGate (free software) and buy an External Hard drive. I did this a few months back.
Most people I've seen in SH defending Windows 8 have said either "you can ignore the start screen" or "You can just put the things you use most on it." The problem I have with this is that the first defense implies that the person using Windows 8 doesn't want it there in the first place, meaning it has no reason to be there. The second statement I find silly since the start menu before served that EXACT SAME PURPOSE.
I'm not saying it's a bad change, I'm just saying it's a bit silly that it was changed at all, though I guess Microsofts statistics of start screen usage being up over start menu usage says it was a good change.
However, metro apps appear pretty fucking useless. Why can any normal desktop program not serve the same exact purpose and better? I burst out laughing when people were praising Windows Blue for allowing "multitasking with 3 metro apps at once", since the desktop can handle as many as you can fit on your screen. Someone please explain the appeal of metro apps to me if there is one at all, I truly don't get it.
The changes to the start menu itself I wouldn't have a problem with, but the metro apps system and "charms" I've heard so much about here just seem like the dumbest things about the OS. Windows 8 would probably be fine if I didn't have Windows 7, but I do, so...
[sp]I've never used Windows 8, this is speculation on my part[/sp]
