By astronomical standards, it's a frigging huge chance.
True, but none-the-less it's not something that should freak us all out. Regardless of whether it's in astronomical terms or not a 1 out of 45,000 chance is still a 1 out of 45,00 chance.
Hmm. This will require some American ingenuity. WILSON! GET ME SOME WHISKEY! THIS IS GONNA BE A LONG NIGHT!
I have confidence in the Russians. They already helped Bruce Willis destroy an Asteroid.
Agree.
that was the most post-worthy thing i have ever read
We should probably give this a whizz regardless of how dangerous the asteroid actually is, it'll be good practice in case an asteroid ever really is coming for Earth.
I want an asteroid >:-(
We should probably give this a whizz regardless of how dangerous the asteroid actually is, it'll be good practice in case an asteroid ever really is coming for Earth.
We should get it in orbit, then mine it!
Last time I heard, we (as in the whole planet) still haven't figured out a sure-fire way of destroying/re-routing an asteroid. Simply blowing it up can actually make things worse by creating a bunch of asteroids, which means multiple places would be hit instead of just one. Using rockets of some sort could go wrong and actually boost the damn thing....and having an already fast asteroid come at you even faster is obviously not good. Now, I acknowledge that we are pretty close to coming up with some method that should work to a degree, but for now, we just don't have anything. So, I call bullshits on Russia :cop:.
Just watch them knock the asteroid into a path closer to the United States.
Fixed.
Good old Russians helping Americans destroy asteroids in movies. The Russians got pissed, so now they send their own mission to destroy the asteroid.
Just watch them knock the asteroid into a path closer to the Earth.
Or they'll make it leak oil everywhere. Dar har Russian engineering joke.
1000 is a bit of an understatement.
They're watching. *wink*
We should get it in orbit, then mine it!
Better idea. We'll hit the moon with it and then mine it on the moon.

That's the problem right there, it's like 30% of the line is in Russia. That's why the US don't want to do anything about it.
The thing is is that if an asteroid of that magnitude it it would effectively screw over the whole planet, so really everyone is at stake.
So they've designed and constructed the biggest nuclear devices in the history of mankind, which would probably be great for asteroid-busters, and they don't even consider them as one possible avenue to take?
This isn't Asteroids the video game. Blowing something up doesn't make it disappear, it just makes lots of small chunks that fly in every direction.
Why don't you go read up on it before you say stuff like that? It's not really an earth killer. It would cause huge destruction, but not to the whole earth and it wouldn't cause any impact winter or shit like that. It would release about 880 megatons of energy.
My bad. :(
Personally, I'd rather have them leave it alone.
This isn't Asteroids the video game. Blowing something up doesn't make it disappear, it just makes lots of small chunks that fly in every direction.
Thus increasing the area/volume ratio making friction upon entry through the atmosphere vaporize more of the asteroid. :science:
I am still trying to think of a In Russia asteroid blah blah blah. Just funny since it remind me of the Russian Waldo picture and how he finds you.
I am still trying to think of a In Russia asteroid blah blah blah. Just funny since it remind me of the Russian Waldo picture and how he finds you.
What?
Haha wow
reminds me of that thing i watched on nat geo where they tried to blow up an astroid and it ended up being smaller chunks with one fucking huge chunk left, and it completely destroyed berlin, was pretty fucking awesome
I am still trying to think of a In Soviet Russia asteroid blah blah blah
In Soviet Russia, Asteroid knock out YOU!
Imma go watch Armageddon again now.
It's alright I've got a basement.
I wonder how they are going to do it.
Why not just blow it up It'll get blown into tiny little rocks that will burn up in the atmosphere and give us a cool light show Plus it will never threaten us again, everybody wins except the asteroid
Basically looking at at least 10 million casualties in this area(dotted line) if it hits in 2036: Wow. Could cause tsunami's too. But it wouldn't be as bad as that guy on the first page says when he talks about North Korea, but it would still be a horrible, horrible event. At least the US isn't in it's path.....unless Russia fucks it up....
fucking madagascar is still perfectly safe AFDAKJSFA
fucking madagascar is still perfectly safe AFDAKJSFA
They'll still shut down everything.
