And what's to stop that from ending up being 75% of the content?
I don't see your point? We shouldn't let them enforce copyright or we won't have any files on our sites?

There won't be any files left on the sites.
Every model ported in from another game, every gamemode that's based on another game, all of that would be forced to be taken down.
I feel sorry for all those (including myself) that lost legit content from this. This really blows. Megaupload was my favorite filesharing website. It had decent download speed and didn't limit the free user as terribly as other sites do. Wish I had some damn warning before losing all my uploads.
No sorry you're not listening to me.
Garrysmod.org occasionally gets DMCA notices and I act on them. Because that's my duty as an owner of a file sharing site. Not every file is gone. Just the ones where the companies didn't want their copyrighted content to be distributed. A lot of companies are cool with it - but it's their right to request we not distribute it.
Megaupload got taken down because they didn't repond to DMCA notices. The copyright holders were asking them to take down the pirated movies and tv shows and they didn't. They were making too much money out of it.
We're not talking about a few hundred dollars to cover server costs. We're talking nearly 200 million dollars.
That personal info they leaked was more detailed than I thought possible.
They even got the property values.

No, Because if SOPA passes then they'll crush anything even remotely offensive without even issuing DMCA takedown notices, They'll make the internet its gimp-suited ballgagged bitch.
Ah shit I always forget about the human aspect of it: Some companies aren't complete assholes.
That's my bad.

This isn't about SOPA. The fact that they can take a high profile site like this down without SOPA speaks against it.
keep up the good work ;)

fuck the DMCA
[editline]20th January 2012[/editline]
RIAA as well naturally.
i don't know why people rag on them so much. they are a group of people trying to do what they think is best for the world- some of them aren't so tech-savvy, so they use botnets and the like, but even those send a message. whenever there is a massive anon attack, EVERYONE hears about it. people here say that they do nothing, but they certainly do ONE thing every time they perform an attack- get people talking. Also, after a ddos attack some servers can be severely crippled, or the operators and/or software distracted while a bug finds its way in.
Except when it gets people talking half of the time it's "oh fucking anonymous what a bunch of assholes taking down governmental websites blah blah I hope someone kicks their teeth in"
And now the internet goes to war with the US government.

They did respond to DMCA notices. They took down plenty of downloads, but the files kept being uploaded again - there's no feasible way to monitor that, and that was taken advantage of.
Hey governments, maybe you should start implementing that "democracy" you keep using as an excuse to invade other countries?
Otherwise, maybe your corporate 'legislation-for-cash' friends will get fucked...
On a SOPA note, the fact they took down MegaUpload without it just goes to show that the legislation itself is just a fucking circus trick to mask what is really happening under the "we're helping businesses to grow and combat negative influences" mantra.
And now the internet goes to war with the US government.
Well let's face it the US government is more corrupt than the internet in it's entirety.
You missed the bit in between 1 and 2 where they give me a DMCA and I take down the content. That's what was missing on MegaUpload.
AFAIK, correct me if i'm wrong, but garrysmod.org does not have 150 million registered users and 50 million unique daily visitors who might upload something - you can imagine how difficult it would become to follow through correctly with every single DMCA

I think part of the issue is that Mega Upload were actually trying pretty hard to remove copyrighted content, it just so happens they have a huge backlog of the stuff that they were going through which was also constantly being re-uploaded. They were trying fairly hard to show they were removing content and even have legitimate content generated through them (that terrible song they had made) does count somewhat.
It's a bit like asking someone to dig a hole, then shooting them once they've only stuck the spade in.

MU got served a DMCA requesting a certain link to be disabled. They disabled it. Copyright holders then realised there were other links.
Their fault for not requesting the content to be deleted rather than just remove the link.

Source?
Source?
Was listed on something posted in the original thread about megaupload going down; in the documentation of the takedown I think.
[editline]20th January 2012[/editline]
If you want to read it, find it yourself.
So why couldn't they just remove the person in charge and put in people who will actually respond to DMCA notices rather than closing everything?
The MPAA's site was down for 15 minutes - justice has been served. They'll think twice before they try to enforce the law again!
Hey.
Fuck you.

If you can't provide a source, your word is worth less than my shit.
Has DDOS'ing ever actually helped with anything?
Has DDOS'ing ever actually helped with anything?
Well when the US tries to provide internet services, it's pretty useless if their websites are down
That's what was missing on MegaUpload.
It wasnt though
It's not just you! http://megaupload.com looks down from here.
:(
Has anyone actually read the indictments?
There is some serious fraud allegations in it, I mean the kind you don't make unless you can back it up.
Its 72 GOD DAMN PAGES
Its 72 GOD DAMN PAGES
What can't lawyers turn into 72 pages of bullshit?
What can't lawyers turn into 72 pages of bullshit?
It isn't 72 pages of bullshit.
Its is 72 pages worth of legitimate, multiple counts of fraud and other offenses I can't be assed to remember because hangovers.
If you can't provide a source, your word is worth less than my shit.
I don't care. If you're interested enough to want to read the paper; by all means go and look for it. I'm not wasting my time finding something just because someone was too lazy to look for it themselves.
I don't know about you, but I don't keep a list of sources I've read just incase someone wants to read them.
