If you have Win10 then you can use the Windows Upgrade Assistant to forcibly update when the 'check for updates' thing can't find it.
What if that way doesn't work?

You can use the Windows Media Creation Tool and tell it to 'upgrade this PC' when you open it.
Re-imaging the OS is not the safest way to perform updates, although one could consider the fact that Windows might still not have infrastructure to allow incremental and atomic OS updates without doing a re-imaging or even anything like it. Other systems, such as Linux server distributions, don't need to make use of unsafe upgrade options either.
Oh yeah, hence the "may be" part. Windows is really weird with updates in general, so when huge feature changing updates release I expect MS don't have a proper incremental update process for it yet.
What I'd give for proper live-patching of things in Windows.
Because he wants to and it's his computer. That's all the reasoning he needs to turn any subsystem he wants to off.
Well that's why you can edit the registry value. To the average user, they wouldn't need to turn off Cortana, because they'd just ignore it
i like how everybody complains about cortana and here i am, with cortana turned off since day 1, never once i used it

A lot of Windows-isms simply revolve around the fact that Windows was just simply never designed to do ____. Like in place upgrades. Its important that by and large, it still has a lot of its design tied to Windows NT and 2000 in the 90s. And in its modern form, Windows Vista.
I guess UWP would mark the next paradigm shift in Windows, but I don't think that really changes a lot from the kernel perspective.

I never figured out how to turn it on :v:
am I the only person who actually uses cortana?
like not so much the voice features, but the other things.
like the ability to mirror android notifications from my phone right to my windows pc
Cortana is available in these regions for these languages:••••
Australia: English
Brazil: Portuguese
Canada: English/French
China: Chinese (Simplified)
France: French
Germany: German
India: English
Italy: Italian
Japan: Japanese
Mexico: Spanish
Spain: Spanish
United Kingdom: English
United States: English
Also unless you're using the US version, you get a dumbed down experience because Microsoft only properly develop bing for US users

I stopped using it as a web search once they decided it should only open Edge
It's rather annoying that 1607 consistently fails to install on both my laptop and desktop. Reinstalling Windows, all the shit I use, and transferring stuff from the external HDD back to the computer is just a dreadful hassle. Fortunately 1511 will continue to get updates, at least; so there's no rush for me.
Yeah sure, I had no trouble, but my mom or dad would've. Googling a problem is not something many people are very good at, believe it or not. If you have no idea what an audio output in windows and all you know is suddenly you get no sound, that's a headache for some people.
Thing is, it shouldn't happen. Windows 10 has duly preserved my lockscreen picture, background pictures etc. from my old Windows 8 installation, it shouldn't start switching between my audio devices for no apparent reason.
This is always extremely funny and interesting to me. When the computer illiterate try to type something in so the computer can understand it, and then they say "I need to know how to change audio sources" and then I promptly type in "How to change audio sources windows 10" in to Google and it totally works, in contrast to the complex way they were wording it before.

But your generic illiterate probably won't even think about the term "audio sources" and will probably just google "my sound doesn't work"

Then why use Windows over Linux? At no point has Microsoft ever advertised the Windows OS as being fully customizable, and at no point has anyone ever assumed it to be.
well, can't really argue with that. i haven't really found anything terrible with anniversary since i updated to it.
I still hate the new Start Menu, I miss the one stock Win10 came with.
