• Kim Jong-un gives rare public speech, calls for an end to north-south 'confrontation'

I'm pretty sure Kin Jong-un is probably having to fight against all the other officials who will see him as a child and make actions on his behalf.
I'd never trust NK with a barge pole, if they are serious about this they still better have a keen eye kept on them.
Could this be the olive branch people were expecting at the start of his reign?
Would it kill you to read past the second line?
But North Korea has offered olive branches before and Kim's speech does not necessarily signify a change in tack from a country which vilifies the United States and U.S. ally South Korea at every chance it gets.
Un does seem to have his head a little less up his own ass than his Daddy-oh. However, how much of the country's power actually lies with him and how much lies with his generals/advisers does make me wonder if anything will ever actually change over there due to oldies wanting NK to stay as it has.
Yes, Please. Bring an end to this confusing madness and all the stupid non-existant dick waving. If he really does go through this, I can safely say the next few years will definetley be brighter. 2013 is off to a good start.
anything to stop the overly pro-jingoistic bullshit going on in north korea
South Korea probably won't unite after all the shit NK did to them, and how they're not that trustworthy at all. I at least hope they become Allies.
South Korea probably won't unite after all the shit NK did to them, and how they're not that trustworthy at all. The people who live in North Korea just happened to be on the wrong side of the border and it's not necessarily their fault. Even though it's been a while since the war ended, there are still people that are separated to this day from their family and friends by the DMZ.
Maybe he isn't following his fathers footsteps after all. Maybe his younger mind is less closed minded about the western countries, and wants korea to be more modern. It would be great, really. It would make sense, too. He studied in Switzerland, which would make him less subjective about the western nations. He'd try to turn Korea into a modern country step by step, maybe taking even decades, because if he'd suddenly start to change everything at once, his life would most likely be at danger.
He wants to make NK better and more modern place than it's now, but he can't do that in one or two days even he's the leader. The NK's government is full of nationalists and old guard communists and they'll (might) have more power than Jong-Un. And compated to CCCP NK is much more closed and authoritian and citizens are so brainwashed, so massive reforms might backfire very badly, that might cause military coup or trigger battle for power or worse. It would have been much easier/ more possible to do glasnost and perestroika and then taking the entire system down if Jong-Il did "destalination" right after Sung's regime. Now NK and Jong-Un is (and has) basically doing minor perestroika to fix NK's broken economy. Also we must remember that Jong-Un is still somewhat militaristic and nationalistic that he wants to show the world how powerfull NK is.
Could this be the olive branch people were expecting at the start of his reign?
In that case, it might be an empty branch at this point.

I don't believe his son has the same kind of sadistic dictatorial pleasure. Then again I could be wrong and he could be exactly like his father and he doesn't give 2 shits about human beings.
I'm more concerned to how his people will react when they find out the truth..
Hope in humanity status: Restored.
It's not that North Korea might not reunite, but just to leave each other alone and try to get along I hope... At least it's good news right?
