Up to 760 dead in England's heat wave - with figures likely to double

Buy some fans. Keep them on all the time. (If you're Korean turn it off at night so you don't die)
Old people don't fare well in the heat.
28 degrees is barely hot even in central Europe.
Stop arguing with "ACCLIMATISATION WAAH", these numbers are ridiculously low for these deaths. England isn't on the fucking North pole jeez.
So what is causing it then, if it isn't people not being used to this weather? It's not like people in the UK are genetically different or committing mass suicide by sunlight
Maybe to help prevent people drowning in dangerous flooded quarries/reservoirs/beaches (I'm not saying that all beaches, lakes and reservoirs are dangerous, that would be stupid - I mean water that's signposted as dangerous) local councils in areas where people don't have access to safe swimming water should reduce the cost of swimming pool access during heatwaves, or maybe even allow free access.
My local council did just that. Half price swimming as long as you are under 6 years old. And accompanied by a full paying adult. And pay for a day pass.
It's a fucking ripoff.
I didn't realize acclimatization not only affected how you felt in certain temperatures, but also changed your bodies tolerance to temperature.
Granted, as an American, even I still wouldn't work for too long if it was 87 outside.

But the UK isn't in central Europe.

Really, I don't want to debate if people are dying because of the heat. I'm more annoyed by the fact that it's blown into being such a huge deal
Threads about heat in the UK remind me of threads about cold in the US, except in reverse.
800 people died because it's 80F outside?
Are Englishman made of ice? It's 103 here right now but people are managing to not die.

But that's still very sad.
wow great job, you live in the hot place
have medal

That's not how air conditioning works.
Christ, I knew we had it bad but sweet lord almighty that's a fuckton of people.
I hope this damn thing ends soon
Dehydration is a creeping death.
I don't understand why we're being so smug (I'm American) about the temperature? You guys act like it never happens here. I know people whos moved from upper Michigan and found Maryland too warm during the summer, and vice versa with people from florida finding our spring and falls cold even though they're around 60 degrees. It's just a matter of how used to it you are to the environment around you.

It is a big deal, people are dying.

uh at least 500 people have died dude
Gosh, you Brits really don't know how to handle the heat, do you? I mean, it makes sense, given your usual climate, but you can't go around with the same habits as you would when it's 60 and rainy when it's that hot and dry out, or you're gonna end up passing out. Always carry a water bottle around with you. Stay hydrated, dress appropriately, and you'll beat the heat.

I keep putting a jacket on before heading outside out of habit. Help.
Name fits.
How? It's good advice. I mean, if you enjoy suffering heat-related illnesses, then by all means, leave the water at home and go for a jog...

Uhhh, he's giving advice that actually makes sense how is that a bad thing

not exclusive to britain
every other country suffers from heat related deaths
advice is good, could have done without the "you brits really don't know how to handle the heat"

It may have just been the way he worded it, but most of us should know the wording is just a joke and there's actually legitimate advice in there.

Trouble is this happens so infrequently that it's difficult for people to learn. If we got these sorts of temperatures every year then things might be different, but that just isn't the case.

Picking at straws, man. I'm not saying it to be offensive, I'm saying it because this article is specifically mentioning England. I'm not even criticizing; a massive spike in the kind of temperatures you're used to can be a shock. When I moved from Oklahoma, which is cold and windy, to Arizona, which is, well...Arizona... I had a hell of a time adjusting. You gotta remember to keep sucking down water, even if you don't feel thirsty, because in hot weather your body melts through it a lot faster than you're used to. It's easy to become dehydrated, which can lead to some pretty serious illness!
I think the issue is that old people still wear like 3 layers and are probably drinking hot tea even in this weather. I know when i went to my grandparents a few weeks ago they still had the heating on and it must've been about 35C inside.
Just as an aside, drinking hot drinks can be beneficial in high temperatures
Makes you sweat your dick off, cooling your dick

Well, yeah, that's why it's so important to learn! It's not a my country is hotter, nananana, you guys are stupid! thing, it's just a matter of experience. The sheer number of heat-related illnesses, injuries, and deaths they're experiencing is a pretty good indication that there's a general ignorance about proper hot-weather safety! It'd be like if Arizona started having below freezing temperatures every day-- people wouldn't know what the hell to do with themselves.
Yeah British people are made of ice and dieing because its hot, that's why we all die on holiday in Corfu and Benidorm.
Our buildings are not made for this weather, we lack the facilities like drinking fountains in many places, many people do not have fans (some can't afford heating in winter so a fan is sorta out the window) and as silly as it sounds our clothes are thicker than those you wear in warmer places.
This heatwave seems to be across a large part of the northern hemisphere. Even here in Michigan where we are used to brutal summers, things like summer camps and other events were cancelled earlier this week. The Heat Index yesterday and the day before was 43.5C. I think the weekend is supposed to be cooler, at least around here.
