Up to 760 dead in England's heat wave - with figures likely to double
So what is causing it then, if it isn't people not being used to this weather? It's not like people in the UK are genetically different or committing mass suicide by sunlight
Remember that places that are normally cold (such as england) usually don't have any sort of cold ventilation systems (ACs and such) and were a heatwave to come, I can imagine indoor places could get quite hot. not as hot as to discomfort someone who's used to hot weather, but perhaps to be really uncomfortable for people who are used to a colder weather.
It's been several weeks. Acclimatization takes a few days to weeks at most. You're not drinking enough water.
Idk if you read the thread but the people getting I'll from the heat are the elderly who simply forget to drink water or fall asleep to not wake up due to heat stroke or the young and vulnerable as they have more fragile bodies in this kind of heat. Acclimatisation doesn't happen at the same rate for every person either!

I'm not affected by it other than it being uncomfortable and irritating. it's been here around a week, most. We're not acclimatised to it, and by the time we would be used to it, it'll be gone.

I'm not referring to the vulnerable eldery, just the healthy indivuduals who claim they can't handle the weather changes.

That's just people being people. Especially english people, we need to have something to complain about and considering the weather is always changing it's a good candidate for complaints. They can handle it, it's just over exaggeration
I'm sorry, but that whole hillside is on fire and those people are just sitting on the beach? I know it's probably uncommon for them, but that's just fucking stupid.
yeah, instead they should just walk through the bushes on the hill to get back to their cars, pretty good
What if their deaths are not related to the heatwave but due to existing medical conditions?
Then they wouldn't be counted, unless it was a death from an existing condition which would not have happened / could have been prevented if the weather was cooler
It's 94 degrees here in Jersey, but it feels like 110 if that counts.
I remember being in the UK during the 2003 heatwave, what really seemed to get you was the humidity.
Going in to the ocean was ball freezing cold though, you couldn't win.
This heatwave seems to be across a large part of the northern hemisphere. Even here in Michigan where we are used to brutal summers, things like summer camps and other events were cancelled earlier this week. The Heat Index yesterday and the day before was 43.5C. I think the weekend is supposed to be cooler, at least around here.
Yeah, a cold front is coming through. Even on the lake the heat index was still 105F with like 80-90% humidity. Cold front is coming next week and the highs will be 80-85 for me.
This weather is also bad for businesses too, especially cafés etc; I work in one and we really haven't been getting the amount of customers we normally do, and so has been effecting the amount of money we take in each week
This. Don't the English have AC? If that many died because it was 85F, then they were going to die anyway. Just being 85 doesn't kill a person, our Body Heat is more than that
No one in Britain has AC, no. We don't generally need it. What's the point in investing in an expensive system you'll need one summer in every 20 years, at an optimistic guess?

They seem to be doing OK if they have outdoor seating, especially pubs

same in Chicago, but after the past few days like this it only feels like I'm melting in a rainforest instead of breathing lava
weather should cool off for NA over the weekend, not sure about the UK's situation though. Things are pretty red on all the maps I've seen today though
800 people died because it's 80F outside?
Are Englishman made of ice? It's 103 here right now but people are managing to not die.

But that's still very sad.
You just had to say it didnt you? Fucking idiot. Shut up.

Where I live in New Jersey Its around 100 degrees. The other day I went to the driving range and after like 30 mins of practice I had to stop because it was just too hot and I felt sick. Luckily I was drinking water so it was more of exhaustion, not dehydration. I can see how lets say I had played off the heat and had no water I could have had a heat stroke or something along those lines.
My GPU is at 118c just browsing Facepunch and my screen keeps spazzing out. This hasn't happened before now so I'm blaming the heat.
Im pretty sure these number are old and sick victims, People dont die at 90F
Wow, that's pretty fucked up.
Sorry for all the folks who may have lost someone important.
Old people might die.
