• Online sales tax set to pass in Senate

All my life, I waited for a credit card to buy things online without fear of sales tax. Now I finally got one, and this shit happens. Fuck.
I just feel sorry for all the programmers who have to deal with all the different tax rates for different locations
Canadian sites manage it. There's a federal goods and services tax that everyone in Canada pays when we buy online from Canada. In addition, we pay a provincial sales tax if we're buying from within the same province. Unless, of course, we live in a province where there is a harmonized sales tax, in which case it's time to call a priest because it's going to get nuts
In case you hadn't noticed, the U.S. government is a bit strapped for cash right now. They need as much tax revenue as they can get. Closing a loophole that allowed people to bypass sales tax is in no way arbitrary.
The total amount of tax revenue lost in 2012 equated to 11 Billion, to put that in perspective, the F-22 program cost around 66.7. The problem isn't the greedy tax payer it's the government spending shitloads of money and not even attempting to be accountable for it. If you want to fix the government revenue problem then you need to cut spending not further constrain the American citizen.

I am yet again pleased that I live in Montana, which has no sales tax. Sucks for businesses based here though, they aren't equipped to handle sales tax, much less the sales tax for every state in the Union.
If I'm being charged 30 dollars for my game on Steam, the one where I'm getting no physical item, I better not have to pay a fucking tax.
You should really read the EULA when you install the game. It says right in there that you are not buying the game, you are buying a license to install the game on your system.
It just passed the senate. I updated the OP with a article pertaining to the house.

Amazon has tax in my state now, shit sucks. I mean on big purchases it adds so much money. I got a camera for $1100, it would have been $1200 with tax in my state at least, that is ridiculous to me
That's rather arrogant of you to assume. I don't think we should be placing another arbitrary tax on the U.S. citizen.
Taxing goods sold online is no more arbitrary than taxing goods sold in a physical store.
Great, more fucking taxes to screw us over, more money for the corrupted and greedy government, and more ways to screw us over, go figure.
Hell fucking no, people in washington better not get a double tax then!
Even shopping online in Canada is painful.
Come on guys, we pay double for music and software in Australia for practically no fucking reason.
So expect online sales to skyrocket, your games be 10 dollars extra, your subscription fees be 20-25 dollars a month, your 60 dollars going to be 10 dollars extra, and all other type of bullshit that the greedy government going to pass.
Taxes suck, but they're essential to have a functioning government. People were supposed to report online purchases on their taxes anyway.
Come on guys, we pay double for music and software in Australia for practically no fucking reason.
Take a step back. It's not practically no reason, it is no reason.
Haha people are seriously acting like this is somehow unjust Come on people. Sure it's annoying but why on earth should online be sales be exempt from taxes when physical sales aren't?
You should really read the EULA when you install the game. It says right in there that you are not buying the game, you are buying a license to install the game on your system.
Did you read the EULA? Or did you just read this online? I bet it's the latter. eh this was going to come. I wish we'd fucking print tax right onto the item price as it appears. Very few people in my state are able to calculate 8.75 of their goods off the top of their head
Maybe they should learn to manage their money, then.
If they patched loopholes the rich used, everyone on facepunch would be celebrating, and if they close a loophole most people use, it's all the sudden horrible? Our money management really isn't the issue here.
Maybe the government should figure out how to manage the money they already have instead of passing laws to take more from its citizens. But that would take effort, let's just make online shopping more of a pain for consumers and businesses.
I don't see this as a bad thing really. It seems really logical. Usually you guys are all up in arms about corporations not paying tax, But this is just closing a loophole.
how about we play fair and close loopholes that exist within congress where they want to fix our loopholes
Maybe the government should figure out how to manage the money they already have instead of passing laws to take more from its citizens. But that would take effort, let's just make online shopping more of a pain for consumers and businesses.
If I told you our national debt was 90% lower, would that sound great? Because around 90% of the debt we have, we own in other countries. So we do have more money than you think
This is going to destroy small home based businesses that make their money online.
This is going to destroy small home based businesses that make their money online.
Just like the sales taxes that destroyed small businesses that don't operate online. Oh, wait.
wow so here i am hoping the republicans actually block something for once lol you guys trying to justify it realize its nothing but a way for the industry to remove competetive advantage from clearly superior online retailers right?
The concept of a sales tax is so foreign to me. I'm used to my money actually being worth what it says on the bill. Montana may be boring sometimes, but fuck do I love our laws. It's bullshit that this will require our businesses to put in place expensive infrastructure to cater to the local laws of other states.
Just like the taxes destroyed the small businesses that don't operate online. Oh, wait.
lol you have no idea plenty of small businesses have had to close because of payroll taxes even if they dont close, it requires to cut back employees and/or hours you even have to pay business taxes even after you close the business
wow so here i am hoping the republicans actually block something for once lol you guys trying to justify it realize its nothing but a way for the industry to remove competetive advantage from clearly superior online retailers right?
Their advantage is that they have a loophole that allows them to not pay tax? Even if they both pay taxes, I'm buying whatever is cheaper overall. Whether it's local, or online. Whether you agree that sales tax should exist or not, all sales within america should abide by the rules.
wow fuck this bill............ looks like im going to turn to pirating all the food i buy from amazon, rip amazons sales on pockey and cases of pepsi
