I've been used to this since Amazon and a whole bunch of other sites started charging california sales tax. This is nothing new for me. It was bound to happen eventually anyway.
You should really read the EULA when you install the game. It says right in there that you are not buying the game, you are buying a license to install the game on your system.
Did you not read my words? The ones that stated I'm not getting a physcial item?
And I know it's just a license, no different than with the disks, which by the way, were just licenses. I was watching "Don't Copy that Floppy" for the laughs the other day, and in that video they stated that Copyright said you have to buy a whole new disk to install in on a new computer. And that was 1994-6ish? I dunno the year that anitpirating ad came out.
Either way, it's always been a license. I know that. It has absolutely no bearing on my argument.

Tangible or intangible- sales tax applies. In some areas even certain services are taxed (ie haircut, taxi ride, electrical work, lawn care/ just a few examples)
The government just wants more revenue so it can spend, spend, spend.
I think the argument that it makes it fair for small businesses is silly. Tax free internet shopping is a benefit, but I doubt the major reason anyone shops online. They shop online because you can sit your ass in the comfort of your home, enter a keyword into Amazon or Ebay search bar and find virtually any product you want.
I just had the thought, what if more people used bitcoin for online transactions? Technically that would bypass any taxes.
Either way buying things on the internet will still be cheaper than retail, so I don't mind this extra tax as it helps the revenue.
The only real reason I ever buy online is convenience anyway, so paying a sales tax makes little difference to me, hell, Amazon's already been charging it in Pennsylvania for a while.

The seller would still have to report and tax the sales, otherwise it would be money laundering for the purpose of tax evasion.
So this already passed no? If so did NewEgg already add taxes? I swear an item I've been eyeing for a while just went up by $10. Which is 5% of it's original price.

Shock horror! Things change in price over time!
As far as I'm aware, the price of things listed online doesn't include any taxes until you actually go to buy the order where it will list shipping costs and any applicable taxes. I don't think the bill has even been through the House but if you're paranoid just try buying it and see if it mentions anything about taxes.
And besides, $10 wouldn't kill you, would it?
What? Did all the publicly-subsidized telecom infrastructure necessary to make the Internet function just disappear overnight?
I wasn't aware that there is publicly subsidized telecom infrastructure. Where can I read about this? All I'm finding is corporate ownership of internet backbones. Are you talking about Europe or the US? Because this applies to the US only.
Why all the dumbs? Usually you guys are for higher income tax, sales tax, corporate tax etc.

Those things don't effect the general FP population so of course we're for those.
In case you hadn't noticed, the U.S. government is a bit strapped for cash right now. They need as much tax revenue as they can get. Closing a loophole that allowed people to bypass sales tax is in no way arbitrary.
Or you know, they could cut military spending, end the "war on drugs", stop spending tax dollars on feeding/housing "criminals" who got caught with a little bit of marijuana and while they're at it, legalize and tax marijuana.
They don't need to fuck the people over who are working from paycheck to paycheck. For those kinds of people, online shopping was the thing that saved them. These taxes are just going to cause people to spend less money, which is bad for everyone. I'd certainly reconsider a larger purchase if it had an additional $20-30 tax. I'll just get it used locally on Craigslist or not at all.

None of those things above are things a state has control over. (Except perhaps state pot laws)
This is not a new tax, it just "forces" retailers to collect it.
The retailers send the tax money to the state who authorized the tax.
Tl/dr not a new tax, not a federal tax, is a state tax, tax evasion is bad mkay

The US has a lot of public telecom subsidies. You can read about some of them in this paper.
