ShotSpotter uses electronic ears posted in strategic spots around the city to recognize, record, and then triangulate the position of shots fired using GPS.

Big brother is watching... and listening
To be honest, I'd rather them listen in my neighborhood for people who are plotting or stirring up shit than not have it.
Oh forgot to say, Big Brother is just a conspiracy theory. I know the government is keeping an eye on keywords and locations but they're not going to waste the resources they have to fucking watch me fap.
Jesus... it's not some recording device that listens to you masturbating, it's a fucking weapons detection system. US military HMMWVs, M2 Bradleys, Cougar MRAPs, et cetera have a system similar to this, it's to detect and pin point the direction and area the shots are being fired from.
This is why you use suppressors, people. :eng101:
Suppressors alone don't completely eliminate the sound, they simply reduce the report to where it won't cause injury to hearing. The sonic boom will still be there unless subsonic ammunition is used. Even then it still makes a decently audible "TICK".
:eng101:
This is why we use the hidden blade from assassin's creed, guys! :eng101:

The technology could be used for far worse, however. That's what bothers me. However, if the Government suspects you of doing something they can already track you through online money(credit and debit cards), cameras, and various shit they have in place to track people.
Fuck that, I cannot understand how people can ever think giving up any privacy for the government can work out, you give em an inch and they'll take a fucking mile.

Yea but what if the technology becomes misused? Instead of just tracking gunshots they can begin tracking anyone and anything they want.
This system doesn't trace people talking, have you any idea how many sounds they would get instead?
The microphones can't track anything making less sound than firecrackers and such, it's an automatic system, not a bunch of blackops-ss-whatever-you-people-call-it radio and surveilance operators listening to everything you say.
These microphones can't hear what you are saying, and they can't be used for that unless you talk right into it, in which case no one will hear it.

If they wanted to they would do it some way or other anyways. If they suspect people of doing something, they SHOULD be monitoring them. That's how you prevent crime, rather monitor than just accuse people.

But its late, this system has already been implemented in several US cities.. Years ago.

And we've had huger threads with more paranoid people who can't understand how microphones work, it had videos and everything.
Oh look my posts are getting dumb and disagree ratings even though I'm right.
ITT: Paranoid people and kids who think weapons have the same report as they do in MW2 and CSS.

Notice that even though they get around a hundred meters away from the camera, their weapons are just as loud as they were from all of about a couple meters. You can also hear the report and sonic crack echoing far off into the surrounding hills.
Why do you think people wear hearing protection at shooting ranges?

I shoot guns and I agree that they are extremely loud. However, I have mistaken cars backfiring for gunshots before. I seriously doubt one of the microphones would pick up a car backfiring as a gunshot though.

If someone wants to monitor you, they can. That has been a fact ever since our society got formed and we developed a structured trading system. If you are worried that the government might monitor you, don't give them a reason to and you'll be fine.

True that, I'm getting fat checks every month just to read this guy's posts (so that my brainwaves can be read by the government and logged trough me instead) just because he covered his entire house in tinfoil.
I read this in a magazine, like 5-6 years ago.
What does that have to do with invading privacy? It's recording extremely loud sounds thousands of people can hear.
It's something different when they start placing cameras and microphones with radios which you can't turn off in our homes, but as long as the surveillance only covers public places I have absolutely no problem with it.

YEAH BUT IT'S ONE STEP AT A TIME MAN, GIVE THEM AN INCH AND THEY TAKE A MILE MAAAN.

Anarchy is great isn't it?
DARPA developed "Bullet Ears" in 1997.
