Do you even know how inexpensive tablets are nowadays?
A top-of-the-line nexus 7 is 200 bucks
I'm the most technologically advanced person in my househould and I still don't own a tablet. Unless you'd consider my WiiU remote as a "in-room-only" tablet.
This is anecdotal, but I've found that the no lifes like myself have ludicrously low adoption rates of these things. It's viewed as a gimmick, we'd prefer the e-ink stuff for reading as latin geek said, we have laptops (often powerful ones) already, or any number of other factors used in any number of combinations.
I find that tablets are far more popular among people who don't take computers seriously, which does make sense. It's streamlined.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tu_quoque
Not quite. I called him out on it, as opposed to directly stating the hypocritical remark. I never excluded myself when talking about how buying video games is a waste of money.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tu_quoque
Not really. He's pointing out that it would be a double standard if he buys a lot of video games.
Look, I don't really want to get into an argument defending my personal vendetta on tablets.

1/4~ online users are tumblrkids, 1/4 of users own tablets, 1/4~ of users have casual lifestyles (don't need the capabilities of a standard gaming PC).
So I think the point is it's a little pointless to declare that something is a waste a money for x group of people, not only because they interpret and use the things they buy differently, but also because even if it is a retarded thing to buy, I'm sure all of us have x amount of x crap that would cause someone one to ask us "Why would you buy x, anything obviously would have been better than x."
People have different tastes, whodathought.
Do I want one? Yes
Do I need one? No
Would I use it in a productive manner? Hell no

Well to be fair thats 1) it's a desirable product and 2) it's the marketing around it. Yeah we can argue whether or not an IPad is worth getting for the price tag vs getting a Nexus 7 for a fraction of the cost but parents spend the money on an IPad because of the marketing and the brand name.

Yeah man, fuck reading, that shit is only for fucking nerds and retards who like wasting money!
I only use my tablet for reading, if you think that carrying a literal god damn library around with you while traveling is convenient then go ahead.

Why not get an eink ebook reader?
I am the 25%.
I'm using it in school to dick around.

Alright. I wasn't going to say anything else, but attacking my personal intelligence because I simply don't like a specific product is going to far.
I enjoy reading. In fact, I fucking love it. At this present moment, I have just finished Pale Fire by Vladimir Nabokov and the next book on my list is Gravity's Rainbow by Pynchon. However, I prefer to read my books in a printed form. I simply despise reading them on a flat screen that emulates a book. It ruins the entire experience for me. It's a quirk I have. I don't read anything of any true relevance on a computer screen, and I won't until the day that printed material is no longer available.
Oh dear. I've said to much and now I'll get boxes. Whoopdy fucking do. Seriously, I don't know why I wasted my time arguing with a complete stranger over the internet about something as irrelevant as tablets. It's mind-boggling that this is what current social standards allow, and it's depressing to know that I've stooped to such a low level. This is an all new low.
Also, I'd like to point out that your last sentence makes no sense. You are saying that you use your tablet for reading, but then make the remark that, well, I don't even know what your point is. It makes no sense really. Then go ahead with what? Not carrying around a tablet? "Go ahead" is usually used when making a derisory statement that casts doubt onto what someone else is doing, but in this case you seem to be using it to deride your own statement. It's curious, really.
Because an HDTV is like a normal TV but big and it looks far better, and a smartphone is just a tablet that's cheaper and can also make phone calls.
Enjoy browsing the web and watching videos on your 4.3 inch screen.
I'll be enjoying both my Nexus 4 and my Nexus 7 which were together less than $500 combined.

As the IT manager for a major company, my tablet is invaluable to me. I can see why you'd think this way but I don't want to carry around a laptop everywhere and neither do I want to manage FTP servers and remote desktop in on my smartphone.
If I'm away from my office and I'm not using my workstation, the tablet is the next best solution and it goes the same for tablet users. No one wants to carry around a laptop to watch a video or surf the web. Especially when you're looking at a high end tablet for $200. It's a steal.
Is it just as good as full fledged PC? Maybe. It can be depending on how you use it.

If you want to make phonecalls why not get a nokia 1100?
Tablets can do more stuff. He probably does more than just reading on his.
As a person who personally doesn't like tablets, I'm going to pointlessly attempt to end the argument here.
Some people don't like tablets, and find them unnecessary and pointless,
Some people like using tablets, and find them very useful and convenient.
All of these people use their tablets differently. It's all up to preference.
Can we please stop the arguing now?
how does it feel to be completely wrong
Well, I'm not entirely wrong. It is a useless waste of time to argue my point online. That much I got right. Let's call it 50-50, even though it's really more like 70% me being right and 30% you being right, really though, I'm just quibbling over useless numbers again. Deary me. I did it again. This is useless post number somethingorother out of me in this thread. I really should stop, but you kind people keep egging me on. It's so very hard to quit when being outside of the mainstream is just so fun.
I should really see a psychologist, but what reassurance do I have that he doesn't use a tablet. If he did, I don't think I could go on living, since they are so useless. My, what power opinions have on the internet. Have you ever noticed that? Sarcasm doesn't translate well, but neither do opinions that clearly have no bearing. For some odd reason, people take comments online as some of the most brutal affronts to their sensibilities that have ever existed. Maybe we should nuke the internet so that people don't get offended. I don't see what issues that would solve though. Perhaps I'm wrong. I think I may just be rambling at this point. Does it seem that way to whoever has read this far?

Still not hearing a solid argument. Tablets aren't just for reading books. They aren't just something parents buy for their spoiled kids. Some people find them useful or desirable for whatever reason and you floating in with an inflated idea that your opinion about tablets is somehow the be all end all, then victimizing yourself when people call you on it is just silly.

I am just silly. This entire argument is just silly. Silliness is how people cope with one another. If everyone was serious all the time we'd kill ourselves. Have you seen Detroit? That's one serious city.

nvm now your just rambling because you've lost lol
A tablet only being useful for spoiled kids is like a webcam only being for making shitty YouTube reaction videos.
You can't get any work done on them. I need a nice keyboard in front of me to type on to actually make progress. More for entertainment purposes on the go.

You can totally get things done on them. Would I want a tablet to write a novel? Not really but it's useful for taking notes and doing technical work on it. I can easily manage servers from my tablet using console and FTP clients.

There never was an argument. People created one because they disagreed with me. I have my opinion, they have theirs, and for some reason or another, there was a big to-do over who's opinion was superior.

A friend of mine who works in finance uses his to check emails, stock tickers, and such related to work. He doesn't want to use his phone for it because the screen is too small to see a great deal of information at once, but he doesn't want to lug around a laptop because of the bulk.

I'm not trying to make you mad. I am just trying to point out the triviality involved in arguing semantics on an internet forum at one in the morning.

Either way it's a shitty opinion. Who cares what people spend their money on? Are the people who buy them for no reason idiots? Yeah. I would say so. If they intend to use it as a media hub or something or just to browse the web, they're totally useful and it's much more portable than a laptop and it's much more usable for more extensive tasks than a smartphone's screen.

Again with the pointless one-upmanship! Why do people feel as though they have to have the last word on any particular subject? Yes, you are right. Yes, my opinion is stupid and defies all logic. That doesn't mean that I can't have it. What is the purpose of deriding someone so vehemently?
I need to know, so I stop arguing with people on internet forums. It's bad for my health.
