Alright. I wasn't going to say anything else, but attacking my personal intelligence because I simply don't like a specific product is going to far. I enjoy reading. In fact, I fucking love it. At this present moment, I have just finished Pale Fire by Vladimir Nabokov and the next book on my list is Gravity's Rainbow by Pynchon. However, I prefer to read my books in a printed form. I simply despise reading them on a flat screen that emulates a book. It ruins the entire experience for me. It's a quirk I have. I don't read anything of any true relevance on a computer screen, and I won't until the day that printed material is no longer available. Oh dear. I've said to much and now I'll get boxes. Whoopdy fucking do. Seriously, I don't know why I wasted my time arguing with a complete stranger over the internet about something as irrelevant as tablets. It's mind-boggling that this is what current social standards allow, and it's depressing to know that I've stooped to such a low level. This is an all new low. Also, I'd like to point out that your last sentence makes no sense. You are saying that you use your tablet for reading, but then make the remark that, well, I don't even know what your point is. It makes no sense really. Then go ahead with what? Not carrying around a tablet? "Go ahead" is usually used when making a derisory statement that casts doubt onto what someone else is doing, but in this case you seem to be using it to deride your own statement. It's curious, really.
Okay, you don't like reading on tablets, thats great, but even so you have to admit they are much more convenient than carrying around books, just because you don't like reading on them doesn't make them a waste of money. I understand that you like physically feeling the pages, and who doesn't like the smell of a new book? There are many things to like about books how they are but really, tablets and e-readers may render them obsolete as years go on. I honestly didn't expect any response, otherwise I wouldn't have half-assed my post. I'm sorry about attacking your intelligence over preference of reading books, however I will defend my stance on e-readers not being wastes of money.
Again with the pointless one-upmanship! Why do people feel as though they have to have the last word on any particular subject? Yes, you are right. Yes, my opinion is stupid and defies all logic. That doesn't mean that I can't have it. What is the purpose of deriding someone so vehemently? I need to know, so I stop arguing with people on internet forums. It's bad for my health.
I wouldn't say your opinion is stupid, its a legitimate opinion, some people just don't like reading from a screen (well it is kind of stupid considering you are reading this from a screen right now but that's not the point), its good you have a differing opinion, otherwise this place would be a massive circlejerk (more than it already is).

I am part of the secret tablet society as well

But when you bring it in like this:
"One Fourth of Americans have wasted money that could have been better spent on pretty much anything else"
It makes you look ridiculous.
I don't mind that you have an opinion, that's great, I have no issue with that.
If you want to make phonecalls why not get a nokia 1100? Tablets can do more stuff. He probably does more than just reading on his.
He specifically said that he didn't.
Well, I'm not entirely wrong. It is a useless waste of time to argue my point online. That much I got right. Let's call it 50-50, even though it's really more like 70% me being right and 30% you being right, really though, I'm just quibbling over useless numbers again. Deary me. I did it again. This is useless post number somethingorother out of me in this thread. I really should stop, but you kind people keep egging me on. It's so very hard to quit when being outside of the mainstream is just so fun. I should really see a psychologist, but what reassurance do I have that he doesn't use a tablet. If he did, I don't think I could go on living, since they are so useless. My, what power opinions have on the internet. Have you ever noticed that? Sarcasm doesn't translate well, but neither do opinions that clearly have no bearing. For some odd reason, people take comments online as some of the most brutal affronts to their sensibilities that have ever existed. Maybe we should nuke the internet so that people don't get offended. I don't see what issues that would solve though. Perhaps I'm wrong. I think I may just be rambling at this point. Does it seem that way to whoever has read this far? [editline]28th December 2012[/editline] It's an odd thing isn't it. I really should stop, but I'm having such a grand time.
what the fuck are you even saying [editline]28th December 2012[/editline] posting from my useless tablet

A tablet is great for entertainment, but other than that, and it's a disaster. It's not like a cell phone where portability is key. If I were to get one it would be to play games and watch videos and movies. But I'll stick to a laptop/desktop for programming and development.
I like my tablet because its a casual lightweight thing to browse the web with anywhere while also having an amazing battery life (this is important). It's also really comfortable to browse online with touch.
My school (private) got Ipads for every student. I am the 25%.
lol, our school bought like 30 iPads Every time, literally every time they roll that locked box of iPads into the class room, I just fucking know that day is going to be fucking USELESS, because nobody can get it to work on the school's shitty WiFi and typing is ten times less efficient than any laptop or desktop. And every time I am right. The natural response of the school was to buy 15 more
I was a tablet skeptic but I know someone who got an ipad 4 for Xmas and damn if that's not a handy gadget. Sure, if you spend the vast majority of your computer time working in Office or something then a tablet isn't that helpful. But if it's about surfing the net, and consuming other media then it's awesome. The difference between that and my 4.3 inch phone screen makes a huge difference. Tablets are clearly the wave of the future. They just need to get cheaper so more people can afford them.
I am just silly. This entire argument is just silly. Silliness is how people cope with one another. If everyone was serious all the time we'd kill ourselves. Have you seen Detroit? That's one serious city.
"I tried to start an argument but then I got logic and decent points thrown at me so I'm going to act all pompous and avoid the subject while still posting to piss you all off"

They haven't been issued to us as they might have been at a more expensive school; rather I may find myself using an iPad once a month, so that wouldn't work out too well.
A lot of you are saying "it's a waste of money", no it really isn't My grandma has had many laptops in her life, every so years they'd spit the dummy, she'd have to get it repaired and it was a fucking hassle, at the time the iPad 2 came out, she expressed her interest for it, we thought it was a good option since it was easy, in her cost range and would eliminate her seeing computer specialist for good unless it had to do with Granddad's big huge beast in his study Considering her internet was shit we gave her a 3G card, since 2011 it has worked perfectly, she loves using it, it hasnt broken on her, she takes photos, browsers the web. email and plays apps to keep her occuipied, she has had a more fantastic experience than the laptops she had So honestly tablets are great for replacing a laptop, because you can practically do it if your intentions arent heavy
Look, I don't really want to get into an argument defending my personal vendetta on tablets. Long story short, they are shiny pieces of crap that people buy because they had 500 bucks to blow on their spoiled kids. That's all you are getting out of me. It isn't worth my time to argue my point online.
So your big reasoning is an incorrect assumption? That's not really a point.
I really prefer netbooks over tablets. Those are scarce now. Is there really proper advantages over netbooks?
the next book on my list is Gravity's Rainbow by Pynchon.
idk about everything else in your post but that's a good book and more people should read Gravity's Rainbow
I really prefer netbooks over tablets. Those are scarce now. Is there really proper advantages over netbooks?
As a general rule. tablets are much simpler to use for the elderly/uninitiated, lighter, smaller, tend to have slightly larger screens and so on. Serious users are not the target market of tablets, which is why they don't really appeal to us. The main advantage is the simplicity, which is really useful for the elderly and so on. Besides, there's a subtype of tablets like the Asus Transformer, whatever that HP one is and so on that all come with keyboards, giving you the best of both worlds.
Here in the UK tablets are selling like crazy. In November if you wanted a tablet your choices were pretty much Nexus, iPad, Kindle. In December shops had entire shelves full of every type of tablet in every price range imaginable. Amazing stuff.
"One Fourth of Americans have wasted money that could have been better spent on pretty much anything else"
I got a Nexus 7 for Christmas which is lovely since I can read comics that would've been too small for my phone's screen and if you wonder why I didn't just buy the comics in print it is because Sweden is expensive as fuck so this will be cheaper in the long run. Also the tablet is very useful in lots of other aspects too.
I really don't see any purpose of a tablet since I have a laptop and smartphone. My dad got one free because of his work, though. If that was the case, I would sure take one.
My grandma has had many laptops in her life, every so years they'd spit the dummy, she'd have to get it repaired and it was a fucking hassle,
Don't buy ricer materials then? Not saying that tablets don't have a niche, or that she isn't fine with it, but it sounds like you bought shitboxes, and reaped what you sowed.
Tablets have their uses for sure. Now, for example, i don't need to take 6+ pretty heavy books to school, they are great for takings notes, reading books, surfing the net on ocasion, playing games, drawing sketches. You can even access you home PC through a remote app. Plus, they feel comfortable, even almost natural. I have nothing against laptops or PCs, but tablets certainly fill a niche, and aren't useless.
