A firearms offense is (generally) what it says it is when mentioned in the news. Using a firearm to commit a crime. I do not see how gun laws come into this, no matter what the gun laws are people can still commit crime using guns. The article even goes into a bit more detail about the crime they are accused of, possession of a firearm with the intent to endanger life. Please tell me how that is "no fun".
Correct me if I'm wrong, but simply owning a semi automatic pistol is a "gun crime" over there. Since you can't get the proper licensing, as a citizen, to own a pistol. Therefore making it a crime to own it, and it is a gun, sooo... If simply owning an illegal firearm falls under the definition of "possession of a firearm with the intent to endanger life", which I could see as being likely, then they could have simply had a gun, and not harmed anyone. Though I don't know what, exactly, they were accused of.
And I thought that can only be successful in movies!

Were they using clown masks by any chance?

Secondly, simply owning one without an FAC would not fall under the category of 'possession of a firearm with the intent to endanger life' - since there may be, as you pointed out, no intention to actually harm anyone. In this case, they clearly must have been in a position where they were threatening someone with a gun.
Thought of the chapter 'Kate' from Mirror's Edge.

They look like every British criminal ever.
I don't understand the hostility about UK gun laws. If you can't feel safe, or indeed imagine someone else feeling safe without a deadly weapon on hand, I think the problem is yours. We're not paranoid about guns, we don't care about guns. Yanks are the guys who're paranoid about not having guns.
The amount of ignorance for UK laws/gun rights on this thread pains me.
Aren't Armoured Car guards taught not to stop for anyone (in some cases, even police), and never unlock or open the doors until you've reached the destination? [editline]6th April 2012[/editline] The article makes it sound like the criminals just ran up to the car, opened the door, and beat the key off the driver.
