• The Beginning of the End, AT&T capitalizing on death of net neutrality

When you see shit like this, you really get to thinking, what is the way to get these people out of office and change the system? I don't see a legal way working, you'll be bullied away long before you get a chance to run for office, nor will you be able to protest in any meaningful way. The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced these big CEO's and corrupt politicians need to be assassinated, for the good of us all.

Often cities will have small ISPs; it might not be the fastest, or the best price, but it's better than giving these companies the satisfaction and money.
This type of thinking is usually how democracies end.
It looks like its already ending for you Americans, why not give it a final push?
Ahh, meanwhile in Finland uncapped 200/15 Mb/s
How's that porn filter coming along?
It's not even that bad, you can just turn it off anyways
How's that porn filter coming along?
Better than your prices
We would switch from uverse to xfinity, but they have yet to put in the service lines.
Stay the hell away from Comcast. Unless you actually want substandard services, then go right ahead.
you poor yanks are fucked
If this goes through, we are next.
And then everyone dropped AT&T and changed ISPs
Nope! Most of their users, myself included, don't have a bloody choice. We either use ATT DSL, or we use dialup.
So...europe I'm sorry if I said any mean things in the past. I owe you an apology
you poor yanks are fucked
fuck you help us please
You guys should drop an email to Kim Dotcom, you know, just in case he wants to start fucking with the ISP business.
Meh, go ahead. I don't need netflix or torrents or anything like that. The internet is a luxury. I'll just stop using it until they fail and come around. They will switch gears once they go bankrupt...
Maybe it is for you, but it sure as hell isn't a luxury for the thousands of businesses who use it to multiply their efficiency or even act as a virtual storefront, and they are the most at risk of being damaged by lacking net neutrality laws.
And, as per usual, Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri has a relevant quote.
As the Americans learned so painfully in Earth's final century, free flow of information is the only safeguard against tyranny. The once-chained people whose leaders at last lose their grip on information flow will soon burst with freedom and vitality, but the free nation gradually constricting its grip on public discourse has begun its rapid slide into despotism. Beware of he who would deny you access to information, for in his heart he dreams himself your master. Commissioner Pravin Lal, "U.N. Declaration of Rights" Accompanies the Secret Project "The Planetary Datalinks"
Oh god. If this happens there will be riots in the fucking streets
I use T-Mobile and Cox Cox is supposed to be my friend in the digital age, they wont do this to me! ...Right? [editline]3rd February 2014[/editline]
Oh god. If this happens there will be riots in the fucking streets
Occupy AT&T
If there's no way to give power to those that represent you, and no way to organize a party that represents you, then democracy is not doing its job.
availability is bad, but i dont think theres any ISPs here that cap your data or fuck with you in any way besides just being shitty in regards to speed my granma pays $20 for 35Mb internet, i think thats fine
Net Virtua will throttle down any and all media streaming services when they're being overloaded, aJato will kick you out of their network, and all known ISPs will provide awful uptime. Oh, and since most ISPs (all?) uses Embratel routes, you're basically screwed, since they're saturated all the time, you'll be stuck with high latency and quite a bit of packet loss. All of that while paying for what should be premium price.
I use T-Mobile and Cox
Oh god, I'm sorry because this is off-topic for net neutrality, but I used to work for MSN doing dialup tech support for their old dialup service. A lady called in asking if her just-off-to-college son could use the MSN client software from dorms. She explained that he and his roommate had Cox for internet, and he wanted the convenience and integration of the MSN client. But what was funny was, she imitated him in what was probably an overdramatic way: "I don't like the Cox, I want MSN!" It was all I could do not to say, "Well, college is a time for exploration and discovery but you should respect your son's wishes, lady." :v:
you know what, i hope riots starts here i really do but, nope probably not because we are all a bunch of pussies.
Stay the hell away from Comcast. Unless you actually want substandard services, then go right ahead.
Comcast varies massively by region. In my area they don't care in the slightest about bandwidth usage, and generally have their stuff running slightly above what you are paying for (We pay for 25/5, and are getting 33/7). Ended up switching to Comcast after ATT started enforcing their bandwidth caps. The email and resulting calls to their support were somewhat funny. After getting hung up on twice "Oh you are receiving this because you exceeded your data plan" "Yeah I know, which is why I'm cancelling and changing providers" "Sir, we charge 10 dollars per 50GB beyond the plan." "Which considering how much bandwidth this house goes through per month would dramatically inflate your already high pricing" "It's only *sees that I went over by 400GB* Ohhhhhhhhh"
"A user of a communications network is prevented from consuming an excessive amount of channel bandwidth by restricting use of the channel in accordance with the type of data being downloaded to the user," explains the patent. "The user is provided an initial number of credits. As the user consumes the credits, the data being downloaded is checked to determine if is permissible or non-permissible."
So if you use more bandwidth, you get charged more- what does this have to do with net neutrality in any way, shape, or form? Paying more for consuming more bandwidth has been part of the Internet since the first days of dial-up.
So if you use more bandwidth, you get charged more- what does this have to do with net neutrality in any way, shape, or form? Paying more for consuming more bandwidth has been part of the Internet since the first days of dial-up.
It's the "in accordance with the type of data being downloaded" part. If I'm paying for X bandwidth, give me X bandwidth. Don't give me X bandwidth when I'm streaming Comcast digital video services but X/10 bandwidth when I'm streaming Netflix in the exact same traffic conditions. If I am paying for X transfer rates and Y monthly bandwidth cap, I expect to be allowed to use that Y bandwidth in mostly any way I choose (or at least on what I choose, if not when, with prime time clogging up the pipes) at something resembling X transfer speed (limited by the speed the internet itself is going that day, obviously). Tiering it up and metering it is the problem.
please don't. The consequences of killing net neutrality will be massive and uncontrollable. There will be anarchy, I just know it.
NO there will be massive regulations, THE EXACT OPPOSITE of chaos and anarchy, unfortunatly the internet thrives on anarchy not regulation and order
I'd like to think that an exodus of customers from AT&T to other companies in the wake of this program's implementation will show companies that people aren't going to stand for that kind of bullshit. That's just me being optimistic, though.

[editline]3rd February 2014[/editline] The one thing I most commonly hear in complaint of US internet is the lack of options in many areas, at least.
