Bullet proof vests expire. Kevlar degrades in water and UV light. Other materials like spectra or dyneema may last longer, but I don't know
Pretty much this. Also soft body armor is basically useless. Go put a soft vest against a tree and shoot it. You'll have to pull the vest out of the tree. It may stop the bullet from penetrating the vest, but not the force from transferring
This thread should be revised -- local news has confirmed that the victim was testing a flak jacket, not a ballistics vest. http://www.wtsp.com/news/local/cousins-decide-to-test-out-bullet-proof-vest-1-dead/316670536
According to the police report, Garibaldi initially told officers he found his wounded cousin after hearing a gunshot. However, police said a witness described Garibaldi shooting Mendez.
What a great cousin.
Call me crazy but if I have to 'wonder' if the bulletproof vest still works, I'll just assume no it doesn't. I mean, if YOU want to try it out fine, but not me. In this case though I think the cousin just wanted to shoot him and all it took was the opportunity to test the vest. I'm sure he said "Well, you wanted to know didn't you?" afterwards.
I bet it didn't have any plates in it [editline]12th September 2016[/editline]
This thread should be revised -- local news has confirmed that the victim was testing a flak jacket, not a ballistics vest. Something like this happened in Britain once. Some chap said 'how do you load this revolver' so his friend put a bullet in the chamber, cocked it (thus rotating the chamber) and fired, not realising he'd loaded it. He was charged with manslaughter but acquitted because he hadn't actually committed a crime.
