a new revolutionary catalonia !
Spain has invested quite a lot of money in Catalonia, so it wouldn't be perfect of it went independent.
I remember what happened the last time Spain had a civil war in the middle of an incredibly tense socio-economic time near the turn of the century. Keep an eye out for helpful international liberators from Russia and Germany.
Am I right in thinking that without Catalonia, Spain would be (even more) royally screwed economically?
Am I right in thinking that without Catalonia, Spain would be (even more) royally screwed economically?
Spain kicked from EU, Catalonia accepted, entire European economy fixes itself within a week. We still got the Fetas and the Spaghettis to drag us down, but it'll certainly lighten the burden.
I don't know. 88% is pretty huge man. Say, 51%...meh, ok. But that's a fucking load of people who have voted yes. And it wasn't like this happened from one day to another. Remember that human chain?
It's still a below the majority voter turnout. A lot of referendums (even official ones, which this one is not) require at least a 50% turnout for anything to happen. Compare that to the Scotland one which had a turnout close to 85%
It sounds dodgy to break away if the referendum was "illegal", but if Catalonia could end up better off without Spain and doesn't need to be governed by Madrid, then more power to them if they can keep it up. Also, concerning Spain never being able to control most of the peninsula as Gwoodman said, what is the recent history of the Iberian Peninsula? I know Portugal was once incorporated into Spain for about 80 years in the 16th to 17th centuries, and for many centuries the vast majority of the peninsula was a Muslim territory (called Al-Andalus, possibly due to the Iberian Peninsula previously being controlled by the old Vandal tribes), but other than that I'm not familiar with current events in the peninsula.
It was only illegal because Madrid said they'll never give independence.
It was only illegal because Madrid said they'll never give independence.
But is Madrid going to force it?
It was only illegal because Madrid said they'll never give independence.
Sounds familiar. I hope the best for these guys. It will screw over spain but Catalonia has been after independence for years.
But is Madrid going to force it?
Doubtful that they even can, or will at least try only at the last minute.
Poor Ortega y Gasset, must be turning in his grave right now. It's a real shame he's no longer around to give a speech like the one he gave in 1932 about Catalonia.
Spain has invested quite a lot of money in Catalonia, so it wouldn't be perfect of it went independent.
Who cares about Spain? I'm more concerned about the people in catalonia that would lose all the government support, including: Free healthcare, free education, employment, transportation, and a LONG etc.
I think there should be a less drastic solution, turning the communities into federations or states, each one still tied with the central government but with more freedom for example. Be still Madrid's dog but have our collars loosened a bit.
I don't understand the Catalonians geez. Guys, I know you were linked together by a fucking royal marriage, but come on, it's been 400 years, and you share a history together. But oh well, so much for self-determination. IF they want to be free, so it be. EDIT: And what's worse, if you ask someone from Catalonia if he is Spanish, he answers back angrily "No I'm Catalonian"
i dont understand why argentina is independent geez you share a history with spain
