It is. I've been trying since I was just 16 years old, waaay back in '06, and I've to date only gotten three replies at all. Tens of thousands of apps out, three replies. Three. At this point I've all but given up on ever getting through the 'traditional' hiring process and am looking for ways to cheat the system. I've bashed my head against the brick wall that is traditional hiring for eight years and gotten a whole lot of fuck all for my efforts, and the closest I got was bypassing the process only to be shut down by corporate anyway. Fucking employers. At least have the decency to send canned denial letters/emails you twats. At least have the decency to tell us what we're doing wrong/lacking so we can actually work on it and improve it instead of leaving us in the dark and making us resort to loading a gatling gun full of resumes, spraying it wildly into the Jet Stream and hoping to god our luck stat that day was ten. Assholes. Mhm. Absolutely infuriating, especially when you're as far from town as I am and just the spend of gas to get to the place is considerable. And yet everything that's hiring requires it.
Wow, how is it possible that the situation is so bad in America? With all the big tech companies you've got over there I would have assumed that it's quite easy to get a job if you have some kind of technical education. When the company I work for is starting a big project and has to hire more employees they have to hire from neighboring countries and freelancers (even though they'd rather hire more permanent employees instead) and people fresh out of school (like me) because there just aren't enough qualified people applying. We still manage to have a lot of unemployed people looking for low-skill jobs though.
The only thing, literally the only thing applying online is worth is giving you one more line item to put on an unemployment insurance claim for the week. I've never gotten anything out of applying online anywhere.
Back in October I applied at 11 places around my town online because there were no physical applications at the store. Only of 2 of those places responded back. Meanwhile, I filled out a physical application at Chick-fil-a and I got a call a day later asking for an interview. Online applications are bullshit.
I remember once applying for a retail job, with a very basic resume. No prior work, just a High School diploma. They denied me and said I was over-qualified. I guess i should have dropped out of school to be able to fit in with retail workers.
So you know that 100+ question personality quiz they give you at the end of an online job app? If you don't "pass" that, it automatically throws it out. gj
That happened to a friend of mine when he had applied to Sam's Club.
The only work I could find was with a Temp agency called Labor Ready. This was fucking stupid because all the work they had was 100 miles away from me. For Minimum Wage. Only reason I applied for them was they were contracted to put up solar panels near 29 Palms MCAGCC, but when I applied their contract was terminated so they were just handing out little jobs like sweeping warehouses of dirt, furnishing the Palm Springs Convention Center, and helping out with Coachella Fest. I kinda wanted to do that but still, 100 miles for minimum wage? Fuck that.
Every place I've walked into has told me to apply online, Every Place I've applied to Online I've never heard back. Quite frankly, I'm a bit worried at this point.
I've had moderate success by applying to jobs smarter, not harder. Instead of just sending out hundreds of applications, I've been getting involved with clubs in my school and community, such as the IT club or Rotary/Rotaract club. By being involved liked that I've come into contact with quite a few business professionals and built a network and I've gotten a few job offerings that way. Your mileage may vary.
Past 3 jobs have been craigslist, no joke. Granted one was a shitty sales job so more like 2, but still.
Craigslist seems to beat out monster. Although there tends to be more sexual favors involved.
This is clearly false data because white male privilege allows white male rapists to get any job at an infinitely higher pay than women
Do you have a Software Engineering degree?
No I was saying I'd like to get one.

I could get fired today at my current job, and have a job in 2 weeks working for a contractor in a plant doing construction (pipefitting, helper, firewatch, etc...). But, that's the industry over here and it's starting to boom again because all of the old tradesmen (welders, electricians, etc...) are leaving and nobody is replacing them. Certified welders are getting ~$35-$45/hour with little to no experience in the field. You just have to be willing to go where the work is....
That happened to a friend of mine when he had applied to Sam's Club.
I found this out a few years ago when I was on the phone with the hiring manager at Best Buy. They were hiring but couldn't get my application so I did the entire thing over the phone with the guy on the line and he never received it because it kept getting tossed out. In turn, he couldn't hire me because they wouldn't have an application in their system to support the hire. ON THE PHONE WITH THE HIRING MANAGER. STILL CANT GTE HIRED.
I fucking hate it when you have to fill out those agree or disagree filter nets when applying online. My mom got a call while my brother was at school because he was applying to safeway and they told her that my brother was not qualified to work there due to the agree or disagree questions that he answered.
In that case I meant that you can't be scared to drive 100+ miles to and from work daily, or to go work out of state for weeks at a time.
that's not economical for a lot of people. for instance, I don't take a job I'd get in the city because when all is said and done, i'm paying to go to work due to gas and car maintenance. you have to know that's fucking ridiculous.
In that case I meant that you can't be scared to drive 100+ miles to and from work daily, or to go work out of state for weeks at a time.
Do you really think it's a matter of being scared? More often than not you can't afford to do that because the public transit may not be efficient enough, you may not be able to afford a car or insurance or gas, there are a wide range of reasons why one might not be able to besides being 'scared'.

I try to be as honest as I can be with those god damn questionnaires.
So what you're saying is that I should lie in those quizzes? Do they really expect a perfect personality in every employee? The only places that ever even called me where ones that had the application on paper, and all of them are minimal wage.
