Companies get research grants and subsidies all the time, companies generate income and prestige for a country, entertainment companies included. This money is for researching gameplay mechanics, i would understand it being fucked up if it was some politically driven weirdness happening but gameplay mechanics are as unbiased as it gets. Governments often give grants to movies and i know ubisoft gets money from canada.
Doesn't make it okay just because other nations do it. Governments should be separate from entertainment media. This only discourages fictional media from being critical of the government. [editline]18th December 2016[/editline] Imagine the shitstorm it'd be if this was the US Government and Sony Pictures.
This is really overstepping the bounds of government. It's just not a good use of tax dollars. I don't like that my money is being taken as it is - it should be used only where absolutely necessary. I can't think of any justification for using stolen money to fund the entertainment industry. I can understand scientific research to an extent, but even that sees quite a bit of success with private universities as it is.
This is great, it should happen more often. Brings jobs and new games, so what's not to like?
I thought CDPR had to treat their devs really badly to finish Witcher 3? I mean the whole industry is like that, but they're not the golden standard.
They have cliques within their framework just like any other company, and some people did indeed leave on bad terms, but their set up is a lot friendlier and freer than most companies by a long shot, and you're going to get that kind of thing in any dev that large. [editline]19th December 2016[/editline]
I don't know guys a government giving 7 million dollars to an entertainment company is kind of fucked up.
Then you better get mad at china, the us, canada, japan and russia also. What you're not considering is how many people these companies employ directly because of this.
Governments give out art/entertainment grants all the time, I don't know you guys are talking about.
in the grand scheme of things 7 million is pennies. You guys are acting like governments don't subsidize millions for movie productions in the first place, why not game companies? Especially considering said game company is the pride of their country, and their President literally gifted Obama a copy of Witcher 2.
Governments give out art/entertainment grants all the time, I don't know you guys are talking about.
I know, but that doesn't make it okay.
if witchers 3's budget was 81 million then this 7 mill was 8 percent of the budget. honestly, I don't care about multiplayer and would love to put 7 million each into 3 of the 4 things listed. If I had to pick one it would be city R&D.
Other studios that got funds granted via the GameINN program of Poland now:
Techland (Call of Juarez, Dead Island, Dying Light) received two grants, one of which for “developing a prototype for an action RPG set in an original fantasy world, played in FPP (first person perspective) and using DX12 technology”. Yes, it sounds like Techland’s open world fantasy action RPG with former CDPR employee Damien Monnier as Lead Designer. CI Games (Lords of the Fallen, Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3) received one grant for a project called LADAI (working title) and another for “the development of innovative technology based on advanced algorithms, dedicated artificial intelligence to generate ambient player in the crowd, and herds of animals”. The Farm 51 (Deadfall Adventures, Get Even) also received two grants, both dedicated to research. The first one will allow them to “construct new and expand existing tools and techniques for creating photo-realistic 3D graphics to the needs of the latest interactive applications and virtual reality” with their Reality 51 technology. The second approved proposal is a bit more enigmatic: “carry out research in the field of hyper-realistic ballistic missiles and armor, photo-realistic visualization of the environment and cooperation of online users. Develop a prototype of an interactive simulator battlefield modular based on the symbiosis environment AR (augmented reality) and VR (Virtual reality)”. Finally, Bloober Team (the studio behind Layers of Fear) will use the funding received to develop a “self-learning automatic system modeling personalized replayability real-time gaming with the horror genre, based on the interpretation of the reaction and the player psychology”. It sounds like an AI whose purpose is to learn the player’s psychology through his/her actions and thus increase replayability by presenting different scary situations with each playthrough. If that was the case, it would be certainly an interesting system.
Source
I know, but that doesn't make it okay.
Why what's wrong with that? As long as it helps a company succeed why does it matter?
I know, but that doesn't make it okay.
So a government doing things to create jobs and help generate more money for the country is somehow bad?
There are even plenty of benefits to this beyond just pure games so irdk why people are whining.
Governments often give grants to movies and i know ubisoft gets money from canada.
Not sure about actual grants in Canada, but in Quebec the provincial gov has tax breaks on every salary in video games. In other words, companies pay 15% less out of their pockets. A bunch of companies come here just because it's cheaper to develop here than in most cities, and with the time we got a ton of talent that would rather work in Montreal. This was made only to convince Ubisoft to come to Montreal and it applied to other companies "by accident" (it wasn't planned at first) but they kept it that way because it helped a lot of other studios get created. It was almost nerfed to 7% a few years ago because of another party leader but they kept it after all.
Since its a government grant its going to be publicly documented, no?
If the results are released to the public then this can only be beneficial
