I have some stuff saved locally just incase my internet dies for some hours, I'll at least have something to listen to.
Is there a way to organize the list by artist, as opposed to album?

I had an idea about 5-6 years ago that you add a module to a game so it affects the volume of the music you're playing in cutscenes and shit.
Obviously never went through with it
Actually wouldn't mind seeing it be integrated into games using steamworks , it would make sense with stream music
Steam needs to just add an API for the overlay with scripting.
It could be like Rainmeter (the idea, not the scripting), but for the overlay.
I completely forgot I was in the beta for this
Still, I like that this is getting closer to public release though.
there are some slight issues with it, i have ~60 files in my music folder but it's only displaying about 10 of them and they're all under the wrong artist / album :v:
it's still in beta so this should be fixed soon
last.fm scrobble support or bust
Yep, though I'd be surprised if it doesn't eventually.
I'll give it a try, but it won't replace MusicBee unless it supports scrobbling.
Grr, I have to completely reorganize the library so I like it. It's recognizing a bunch of loose files and misnamed stuff.
For some reason multiple discs on one album show up as multiple albums and like half of my album art is missing. Odd.

Actually holy shit this is a terrible player.
[editline]24th July 2014[/editline]
If you have shuffle enabled, you can't select a specific song to play in album listing mode. It will just load up 5 random songs on the album and play those, and there is a good chance the song you picked won't be there.
There is no way to sort by album artist so sorting by artist is useless, considering you will have like 400+ artists in that list because of featured artists.
On the in-game overlay, you can only bring up the player for the album/artist/queue you selected. You can't add songs or change the album at all.
Track numbers and, like I said, disc numbers, are not shown and multiple discs mean multiple albums to the program.
In album mode, it will not show the artist under or next to the song if it's different to the album artist, so you can't see who else is on the track if it's tagged that way. You have to load up the album to see this.
In album view you have to know each album by name instead of by album art or artist, since it isn't shown unless you open it.
You can't see length of a song anywhere. Even in the player it just shows how long the song has been played.
There is no playlist support or way to edit data, which would help in trying to find out why a single song is separated from the rest of an album even if the tags are the same.
File formats are an issue considering the popularity of FLAC and M4A, but those should be added eventually. Other small things should be added like an EQ, but that's fine considering it's a beta.

Of all the things to not have, they don't have WAV support.
hopefully they'll add Spotify and WiMP support in the future. I never save stuff locally anymore, and if I ever do, it's .flac which this doesn't support.
Spotify and other music streaming services are only available in a handful of countries.
Okay so I've got a few issues (besides scrobbling as I previously mentioned) with it that contribute to why I wouldn't use it in it's current state. They can mostly be fixed by giving people the ability to customize a bit.
My biggest problem is that there is no link between the player window that pops up when you start an album and the main Steam window. I'd be using a steam music player to make it so that I'd have less windows to fumble with, not more. The solution would be to add this bar to the bottom of the main steam window.
There doesn't seem to be a queuing function, either, so every track starts at the beginning and there's no way to change your position on a track besides. It's also inconvenient that it doesn't show any track times anywhere besides your position on the track you're currently listening to.
And fuck this, if there's anything that makes me angry for a dumb reason it's seeing Song - Artist.

Last thing I'm going to be picky about is that my keyboard functions don't work with this player, so I can't just hold down the function key and press F5 to pause/play my music while I'm playing a game. It'd also be nice if the taskbar highlight had player buttons like so.
I don't think I'm asking too much out of a music player. My MusicBee player is pretty much everything I want in a player and I don't think it's very complex...
Grr, I have to completely reorganize the library so I like it. It's recognizing a bunch of loose files and misnamed stuff.
lol, I had to deal with that. The first time I pretty much redownloaded my entire library (It was a good bit smaller then, but it's currently sitting at 742 artists and 1,529 albums) in v0/320kbps and fixed each album's metadata so it conformed to my self-imposed standard (Artist/Track/Album/Track#/Year as well as album art, any other data like genre was deleted). It took a decent amount of time but I'm glad I did it.
Then when I started powering my headphones, and every album that I had that happened to be a vinyl rip suddenly had pops and clicks that I couldn't ignore, so I had to redownload a bunch of albums again and be more picky about what I would download.
For some reason multiple discs on one album show up as multiple albums and like half of my album art is missing. Odd.
It might be that half of the music you have doesn't have the album art embedded or saved in the album folder (not sure if Steam searches for/detects folder.jpg/etc files). All of my music has the album art embedded in each mp3 file and I have no problems with missing album art.
It might be that the music player you normally use will try to fill in the blanks via the internet if it doesn't detect anything.

Don't think that is it. One of the albums that shows up has the album art in the same folder and is embedded into the MP3.
Spotify and other music streaming services are only available in a handful of countries.
if you are saying they shouldn't focus on getting Spotify support because of that, then I have to disagree. Spotify is available in the US, all of Scandinavia, pretty much all of Europe, some countries in Asia and most countries in South America.
https://support.spotify.com/us/learn-more/faq/#!/article/Availability-in-overseas-territories
then there's over 10 million paying users, with an even higher amount of free users, over 40 million. there's no reason for Valve not to consider integrating Spotify with the gigantic userbase it has. I don't know a single person who saves music locally anymore, it's just so much easier to stream it
I just use iTunes
works perfectly
Last time I tried to use spotify a bunch of songs off Can albums were missing and they didn't have half of the Kinks albums I was wanting to listen to. I'll pass.
Can't wait for the Pixelvision skin to update, currently the music library doesn't work with it turned on.

Adding support for online music streamers is going to be tricky because there are tons of different services and each one of them have their own API and providing support for all of them will require a lot of resources.
To provide an example, pandora radio is only available in the US, AUS and NZ but its userbase is almost as big as spotify's. Who chooses what services take priority over others and what's implemented?

you have a point there as I've never personally used Pandora since it's not available here, and nor do I exactly wish for it for the same reason.
I don't see why they should leave it out though as streaming music has become as big as it has now. I've only ever heard of Spotify, WiMP and Pandora where Spotify and Pandora are definitely the biggest ones. only focusing on the largest services shouldn't be too much of a hassle, all that's needed is a remote functionality which interacts with the client itself
in terms of what service takes priority over the other, I assume that'd be the service with the highest availability and the highest userbase
I'll stick to foobar, but it's really cool that Valve is doing this.

the service that co-operates with valve is the one that gets priority
spotify has a decent API and integrates with a lot of stuff already.
I can barely even open the overlay half the time in the beta.
i'm way less interested in the player itself, pretty much everyone already has a music player they are used to and enjoy. i sort of don't see a reason to use this over foobar which i've customized and does everything i want it to do
still it's super cool to see valve trying to make steam an all-in-one media app since they've gotten big on streaming. using in-home streaming and having access to my full music library while streaming steam games from windows to my linux box in another room is just handy as fuck and they make it really easy.
just hope they do heavy-duty feature work on this player because it's missing so many basic and fundamental things it's practically unusable for me as is
It's been what? A day perhaps
Still hasn't recognised an update
(and yes, I have clicked the option to check for updates)

are you sure you're opted in to the steam beta?
Why wouldn't I be?
