According to AP, he only developed it about three years ago and kept it secret.
Looking back at the interview, he does seem a bit weaker than you might've expected from an 80-year old.
Fuck me... Rest in peace.
Fuck 2016. He was one of my favorite actors to watch. RIP
Wow, he was a fantastic actor. Rest in peace to the ONLY Wily Wonka.

This ruins my day, Although he was pretty old in his last interview.
man, fuck this year and this combination of numbers.
2016 needs to fucking end right now. Can we just end 2016 on August 31st and have 2017 start on September 1st and make 2017 last 4 months longer?
Yeah so shit-gobblers can just associate 2017 with celebrities dying instead, like they have about 2016 every fuckin thread so far.
RIP Waco Kid.
young frankenstein was one of my favorite films growing up. still a goodie. you will be missed
I'm actually crying right now. RIP <3
Holy shit, I was just reading an article about him earlier this week. How, after a string of directorial flops he left showbusiness behind, the effect Gilda Radner's death had on him personally and how he took up becoming an author and painting as a hobby. Very, very saddened to hear this news. Gene Wilder had this charisma and razor sharp wit that he brought to every role that I don't think could ever be replicated today. An all around amazing actor and person. Rest well Gene.
Gene's nephew issues a full statement:
It is with indescribably sadness and blues, but with spiritual gratitude for the life lived that I announced the passing of husband, parent, and universal artist Gene Wilder, at his home in Stamford Connecticut. It is almost unbearable for us to contemplate our life without him. The cause was complications from Alzheimer’s disease, with which he co-existed for the last three years. The choice to keep this private was his choice, in talking with us and making a decision as a family. We understand for all the emotional and physical challenges this situation presented we have been among the lucky ones – this illness-pirate, unlike in so many cases, never stole his ability to recognize those that were closest to him, nor took command of his central-gentle-life affirming core personality. It took enough, but not that. The decision to wait until this time to disclose his condition wasn’t vanity, but more so that the countless young children that would smile or call out to him “there’s Willy Wonka,” would not have to be then exposed to an adult referencing illness or trouble and causing delight to travel to worry, disappointment or confusion. He simply couldn’t bear the idea of one less smile in the world. He continued to enjoy art, music, and kissing with his leading lady of the last twenty-five years, Karen. He danced down a church aisle at a wedding as parent of the groom and ring bearer, held countless afternoon movie western marathons and delighted in the company of beloved ones. He is survived by Karen, Jordan, and the Webbs (Kevin, Gretchen, Tucker, Spencer), along with Jordan’s wife Elizabeth. Gene’s sister, Corinne, predeceased him in January of this year. He was eighty-three and passed holding our hands with the same tenderness and love he exhibited as long as I can remember. As our hands clutched and he performed one last breath the music speaker, which was set to random, began to bare out one of his favorites: Ella Fitzgerald. There is a picture of he and Ella meeting at a London bistro some years ago that are among each our cherished possessions. She was singing ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow,’ as he was taken away. “We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams.” Sincerely, “Gene’s Kid” Jordan Walker-Pearlman
and also Mel Brooks, who is amazingly still around and even tweeting, sent this out:
damnit. Everyone I want to write a letter to keeps dying. RIP Gene. You lived a full one.
Gene's nephew issues a full statement:
That's honestly beautiful. I'm just happy he died peacefully. After such a long life and wonderful career, he at least deserves that.
Gene Wilder was a big part of my childhood because of Willy Wonka. That and The Producers were the only Wilder films I had seen until recently when I watched Young Frankenstein for the first time. I'll have to try and watch Blazing Saddles now. Rest in peace.

This is the saddest thing this year, maybe someone with some paint skills can make some animated RIP Gene wilder avatars?
I'm just glad to to have had him as a role model all my life. Grew up with his movies. There's always going to be a part of me that strives to be more like him. Rest in peace Gene.
fuck you 2016
Goddamn. All the great collaborations between Brooks and Wilder made me the terrible person I am today. Going to miss you a lot, Dr. Fronk-en-steen.
2/3 of my comedy heroes have died so far... haven't been this sad since Robin Williams. Steve Martin is the 3rd, btw. Hope he doesn't go soon either...
I will always remember this video, which is the first result for 'willy wonka you lose' and made me laugh out loud when I first saw it
Oh God, he was one of my favorite actors, I always loved the Young Frankenstein movie....
Willy Wonka and Blazing Saddles were one of my favorite comedies growing up. Gene Wilder was one of my comedic idols and a lot of my humor sparked from him every now and then. I'm gonna miss him; may his movies and his career carry on forever through us, the audience and the people he worked with.
Rest in peace you glorious bastard, you were an amazing actor.
noooo not another legend 2016 why do you have to be such an ass
One of the first actors I can remember loving. Dude was fucking excellent.
