Ultimately it doesn't matter one way or the other. NeoNazis aren't in existence soly because some Hitler busts still exist, and "neo-confederates" don't exist just because theres General Lee and Stone Wall Jackson monuments. Removing those monuments wont suddenly right the wrongs of the past and they're not going to stop racist fools from being racist fools.
No one wants these statues removed because they think they literally cause people to become racists; they want them removed to send the message that the American people have moved on and won't stand for anything that glorifies hate groups.
Whether that's actually what the American people want, and whether you believe those statues do glorify hate groups, is of course debatable.
What part of history would be removed with the statues? There are still countless of museums and books and documentaries etc. about the stuff.
Well, I mean, consider this:
That guy I mentioned that always brought up the Lenin statue when anyone even mentioned removing a Confederate one? He keeps posting this picture of "George Soros" (actually Oskar Groening) in an SS uniform that claims he was part of the SS (which is debunkable because 1) Google reverse image search will automatically show that your claim is full of shit, and 2) Soros was , like, 9 years old when WWII started). There are no statues dedicated to Nazi leaders to teach him the history of the Nazi party, so maybe statues are an important source of history for them.
They're like picture books for history or something.

Statues are art and can be interpreted in any way imaginable, but is it worth it to tear down a statue because a group of 300 wannabe martyrs use a statue as a point of worship? Probably not but like I said earlier it really doesn't matter.
Robert Lee's good points aren't going to disapear if one of his statues is removed, and none of his bad points will go away either. The fact that he existed, and led a rebel army intent on keeping slavery instated, is only going to be less apparent without statues dedicated to him.
