They're literally homes big enough to eat and sleep in with a very small space for personal belongings. The whole "fun" part of owning a home has been comepletely streamlined out. It's actually kind of depressing.

well.. that's what the genre was inspired by. (Japan moreso though)
Its going to be interesting once these buildings reach the end of their lifespan.
My dad lives in HK, he has a pretty good job as a senior construction manager. His flat costs more than my mothers house in the UK yet its like 1/4th the size.
Crazy shit.
Finding Maggie Chow would be impossible.
Huh. I was listening to this while looking at the pictures.

I am inclined to listen to the first 15 or so minutes of this whenever I view industrial or heavy city-scapes:

Its almost like Mega cities in judge dredd.
Its almost like Mega cities in judge dredd.
That is what I was saying earlier, though I can only compared to the Dredd movie since I've never read the comics.
It's like they just ctrl+c ctrl+v'd the entire building.
it's like paint when you crop a square of squiggly lines and drag it around the screen and make a squiggly square roller coaster

There's something about small spaces. They're sometimes compared to being in the womb, being snuggled in a security blanket, etc. There's something about them that some people like.
Although Asia just does this because of space requirements.

This gives a crazy crosseyed 3d effect with the right and left buildings (but not the center one).
This is incredible, I would love to live in something about this small. Maybe twice as large.
Agreed, having everything in one place like that looks effing awesome.
My bed could barely fit in one of those apartments.
I don't see a bathroom in those pictures..
The bathrooms in the buildings are communal, so many apartments share the same bathroom IIRC.
My aunt lived in many places when I was young, including 3-4 years in Hong Kong. I'd love to get her firsthand perspective on living in the city. It's a shame I've had no contact with her for years.
I lived in HK back in 1999, although I was much better off, living in Mid-mountain (generally, the higher up the mountain you go on the North side of HK island, the more well off you are).
These are surprising sights to me, as the "usual" parts of HK are more more spacious. (Higher skyscrapers to make more room though).
The last time I was in HK was...I think 5 years ago now.
If you're well educated or can get a well paying job, then HK is not a bad place to be.

I'll never forget that building; I could see it every night from my bedroom window. (I was 5 when I was in HK)

A little more wikiwalking brings me to this: (If you scroll down to the picture where you can see a smaller building that is composed of 2 smaller towers, my parents own an apartment in that, give me a shout if you want pictures)

How did they get a hold of my Dwarf Fortress building plans...
The "Kowloon Walled City" was a clusterfuck of structures in Hong Kong before it was knocked over.

i think it'd be pretty neat if this extended all the way to the sky and the buildings get so tall they have to connect to each other for stability
