do you shoot dogs that aren't a threat to you even if they're coming in your direction?
do you even do a threat analysis or do you just go "OH DOGS COMING THIS WAY KILL IT"
Because dogs cannot jump fences?

Granted, I don't know a lot about pitbulls' jumps, but are they able to jump even higher than that (to not hurt themselves with the spikes at the top)?

No.
Because dogs cannot jump fences?
does this dog look like it's trying to jump over a fence? pitbulls aren't jumping dogs. they probably cannot jump a fence of that size without an object to help them vault over it.
either way, you are destroying someone elses property because you misread a threat that wasn't there. By your own admission, any mean looking animal coming your way would be grounds enough for you to shoot it, regardless of the context of the animals actions or personality.

Never get a gun.

Regarding threat assessment, if it's coming at me quickly and making lots of noise i am going to go get ready to fight for my life. Depending on type of animal and behaviour it's quite easy to tell what it has in stock for you. A tiger sneaking at you, a dog rushing at you as fast as it can, a snake hissing loudly. It's not difficult to tell what it wants to do. A lot of animal behaviour has been programmed into us by evolution so we can tell if an animal is hostile or not.

I suspect that the cop is a dumb ass. Nothing really convinces me that a dog needs to be put down with firepower. If a dog comes at you, kick it or use your nightstick? Using a gun seems like overkill, quite literally so. This is a situation where the 'use of force continuum' comes into play.
Mind you, if a cop is so easy to use a gun on a dog, then how easy will it be for him to pull out a gun on a person?
I always hear about how totally harmless and cute and cuddly pit bulls are from pit bull owners and how they'd never hurt a fly

...really man? Is your common sense component of your brain completely turned off? You could raise ANY dog to be a dick. You could buy a fucking chihuahua and turn it into a vicious asshole if you wanted to. When RAISED APPROPRIATELY, pit bulls are extremely nice. I've owned several, met several other owners, and their pits have been nothing but fully loved members of the family. My pit is literally too docile to hurt a fly, and I mean that. She's scared of them. She even talks.

So according to your logic, everytime a large dog runs up to a fence and starts barking at you, you're in the clear to pull out a gun and shoot it? Dude, your concept of reality is completely fucked.

If the fence is enough to keep it away from mauling me why should I kill it, however if it tries to make its way over the fence to kill me I am in the right to protect myself. Each situation is different and you assume i am thinking like a robot and cannot take the situation as a whole into account.

There's no evidence that the dog ever left the fence. The officer has no proof, and no injuries, so it's safe to assume he's an idiot and shot himself in the leg. And trust me, a pit of that size could not jump that fence successfully.

Maybe he just reached to take the gun of its holster as a precaution. Cause you know, dogs can be really hostile and scary.

were you attacked by a dog or something when you were younger? or someone you knew or something? that would explain why you would be so quick to use violence against it

Because being afraid of something that can kill me is being a pussy.

When it's safely behind a fence yes. Yes it is.

Considering me using a bicycle 5 days of the week, yes I am quite nervous around them.

I'd only trust barbed wire on top of the fence or a fence being 2 meters or taller.
Also automerge

Not when the dog lunges at me the very second I pass it. It happened once, i was almost bit, luckily a leash kept it from tearing the meat off my legs.

Wow man, you are paranoid as fuck. Give the dog a wide girth if you're such a weenie about it. Invest in a set of kneepads or something.

i bike past more than a few dogs basically every day. just because they run up to a fence and start barking doesn't mean they want to rip out your throat. if you're so worried about it, don't get too close to them and just bike faster past them
Because being afraid of something that can kill me is being a pussy.
being so afraid of something behind a fence that you rush so hard to get your gun that you end up shooting yourself. i would call that being to scared since it would take the dog a few seconds to think of jumping the fence and even then it might not be able to.

Yes, they are different. That's not the problem though, the problem is naive people getting these breeds without raising them properly.
Either people treat them like children, and refuse to realize that their little angels are actually dogs who need to be trained. Or people aren't prepared to deal with a large dog. All dogs can get aggressive if not trained from day one, difference is that an untrained pit bull is a lot scarier and dangerous than an untrained chihuahua.
If trained properly they'd be no more prone to aggression than any other breed, but they are far more difficult to train.

If you live in a neighborhood with poorly trained dogs then I'd suggest reading up on dog body language, they'll usually show signs of aggression from miles away if you're approaching them. Barking is usually not a guaranteed way to tell if a dog is aggressive, silent nervous ones are far more likely to bite you.

Not every dog is out to bite your ass you know. Put aside your unwarranted paranoia for two seconds and think about all the innocent pets whose lives have been ended because a Police officer had your mind set. Think about all the families who had to tell their child "Sorry Timmy, but Rocco is dead. He was killed by a Police Officer when he was just saying hi.".

They're really not drastically harder than any other breed to train.
My ex girlfriend has raised 4 different pitbulls over the years and none of them have any temperament issues.

When I was a child there was a dog named 4paws (yea I know, very original). I was riding my bike and he started chasing me. I don't know why, but he did have a history of being territorial. The problem was the owners let him run freely without so much as super vision. Because the owners didn't care about their dog he saw his territory getting larger and larger. He wasn't a bad dog, but he wasn't trained very well so when he saw me on my bike he didn't understand what I was doing so he chased me away from what he thought of as his territory. I fled to my house where my dad saw and heard me. Rather than shooting the dog dead which my father could have done with numerous rifles, and composite bows at his disposal, he shot off a couple of warning shots with his sling shot. Ever since then the dog knew not to approach our territory. My dad also spoke with the owners and convinced them to keep a better eye on their dog.
Point is, it's not the dogs fault that they are the way they are. It's how their raised. And when their owners don't care about what they do, the dog sees it as being free to do whatever it wants.

So if a dog just ran up to you, you would kill it if you had the opportunity?
