This could take a great burden off shipping ports.
Thanks for updating my late thread I was going to look for a newer source but it was already off the top of the first page so I didn't care
First 4 replies confuses the fuck out of me. Anyway, glad to see we're finally connecting continents together. This should make travelling a lot easier for some people (namely ones who are afraid of flying and/or boats).
Pointless, you still have drive incredibly far across Siberia to get to act the parts of Russia that aren't ice.
I'd be down for a road trip. California to Moscow let's do this!

I think that they're building a tunnel instead of a bridge so they don't have to worry about ice and saltwater ruining the materials
Pointless, you still have drive incredibly far across Siberia to get to act the parts of Russia that aren't ice.
It's still much faster than putting cargo on a painfully slow ship and sailing across the ocean.
And then it gets covered in crab pots
And then we build a tunnel from New York to London. Now
And then we build a tunnel from New York to London. Now
But there's jets that travel at 300+ MPH that we use for that.
so you're going to build a rail tunnel in the middle of nowhere to another place in the middle of nowhere. progress?... [sp]i keed i keed[/sp]
Hooray, I can finally drive from Alaska to Russia! ...After driving 3000 miles to Alaska, that is.
Pointless, you still have drive incredibly far across Siberia to get to act the parts of Russia that aren't ice.
Why would you drive on a freight train line?
so you're going to build a rail tunnel in the middle of nowhere to another place in the middle of nowhere. progress?... [sp]i keed i keed[/sp]
Sure, they need something to connect to the Bridge to Nowhere, after all. :v:
So that means only Australia will be unconnected to everyone else? haha [editline]27th August 2011[/editline] As a continent, I mean. Excluding that penguin one.
Tolls are going to be a bitch.
Awhile ago they wanted to build a bridge with ice breaking pylons on it. Wonder why they abandoned the bridge for a tunnel, seems like the bridge would be easier and cheaper...
A bridge would take much longer due to the fact that they can only build it for five months out of the year, due to the weather on the strait during the winter. A tunnel could be dug year round.
Even though there's no road (probably far too risky anyways), I'm sure there will be "Chunnel-style" rail cars for loading vehicles onto. Drive on in Alaska, drive off in Siberia!
The concept of taking a train from New York to London just sounds awesome. Heck, in theory you could go from the tip of Chile to South Africa.
Meanwhile on Deadliest Catch..
High speed passenger rail in the future, maybe. [editline]27th August 2011[/editline] Norway to Florida
Cape of Good Hope to Argentina. That would make a great Top Gear special.
The amount of DUIs in Alaska is going to increase significantly.
Wouldn't that make every major landmass connected? Britain to Europe, Europe to Africa and Asia, Europe/Asia to The Americas. You could drive anywhere in the world to anywhere in the world.
A tunnel underground at the bottom of the sea would be terrifying. How do they pump air into it?
A tunnel underground at the bottom of the sea would be terrifying. How do they pump air into it?
Fans assisted by the air pressure of the trains themselves. I assume the line will be electric as it's dumb to run a diesel loco in a tunnel that long.
Wouldn't that make every major landmass connected? Britain to Europe, Europe to Africa and Asia, Europe/Asia to The Americas. You could drive anywhere in the world to anywhere in the world.
Australia
A tunnel underground at the bottom of the sea would be terrifying. How do they pump air into it?
There's a tunnel running from the UK to France that's been open and operating safely for nearly 20 years now, it's not as scary as it sounds :v:
Why would you drive on a freight train line?
Autoblog originally reported it without specifying what kind of tunnel it was, so everyone assumed it was a roadway.
I like this, just seeing two countries work together and especially with Russia and America's past hatred in the cold war. Progress is good.
