• Garry writes for The Guardian: Why my videogame chooses your character’s race and gender for you

I actually am now considering getting this game. It's a pretty unique feature, haven't heard about something like it before. You are who you are, and all the social things that goes with it - like what happened to Swebonny. Good call, Garry.
Worth pointing out that this is compared to programming a full character customization setup that includes facial and body morphing sliders that aren't too easy to abuse, hairstyles, and whatever other crap people want, all packed tightly in a nice attractive GUI. These kids essentially want a Skyrim-esque character creator that a company like Facepunch doesn't have the time or resources to pull off, nor do they give enough of a fuck to try anything like that in the first place.
They could absolutely do it. I think it really is just some bone weights on stuff and etc. However, I love this. This is so garry. I love how much salt there is from people that care about their in-game character and gender. I own Rust but don't play it, and I logged in and checked and I got a white chick. I think it's hilarious that there are people who are racist/sexist, and got assigned a black/female character and have to deal with the consequences of it because of the community's racism/sexism. This is better than Reddit's 'The Button' in terms of social experiments. The only legitimate argument I see is hitbox sizes being different, and white people being easier to see in the dark. Maybe garry can add face paint so you can wear blackface. :v:
I don't know lads, from my experience this feature is great. Now we've got tribes divided by gender lines and racial! Hell, I think I remember seeing a video where a tribe came across a genuine midget, and probably kept him as a grotesquerie.
They could absolutely do it. I think it really is just some bone weights on stuff and etc.
It's definitely wouldn't be simple to do, but sure they could do it. However they have limited resources, so putting that much time and effort into customization for a game that honestly is better off without it means taking time and effort away from the things the game actually needs.
I never was really interested in playing rust, but this actually has me somewhat intrigued.
Maybe garry can add face paint so you can wear blackface. :v:
There's already stealth clothing and masks and shit, so not a huge deal [editline]14th April 2016[/editline]
Now we've got tribes divided by gender lines and racial! Didn't this game used to have hair? I swear I remember a post from someone complaining he was a black man with blue pubes.
I kind of want a wall of shame for support tickets for this
Fair play. I wasn't gonna go on a moral crusade btw, I was genuinely curious.
It was just an excuse for me to show her off.
Unfamiliar with Lua but program in other languages, assuming this is all it requires then it is easy, but I have a feeling the programmer needs to have a say in the randomSeed method.
The ID is the seed and it's clamped between 0 and 3 for the 4 race/gender oprions I'm aware of [editline]14th April 2016[/editline]
Worth pointing out that this is compared to programming a full character customization setup that includes facial and body morphing sliders that aren't too easy to abuse, hairstyles, and whatever other crap people want, all packed tightly in a nice attractive GUI.
Didn't take long for someone to switch into I LITERALLY FEAR FOR MY LIFE EVERY DAY mode and completely melt down they're just kicking and screaming
I'm waiting for somebody to write that they're literally shaking right now.
I can kinda see the appeal of this. It's fun trying these RNG stuff to see what you and your friends ended up with and then laugh at the results. I once used one of those name generators and I ended up with "Lesbian Warlock" and for shit and giggles, I actually used that name for whole month before I got tired of it. Also it makes the "population" much more varied which is a nice touch. And this is a game where it really doesn't matter what you look like so why making it look like such a big deal is beyond me. But at the same time, I kind of understand that some people would prefer to play as themselves along with the "LUL RANDUM" factor quickly stopping being funny after some time. And if it really doesn't matter what you look like in this game, I see no reason to not give the player a crack what their appearance will be like if all the necessary sliders and options are in the game already. Hell, you can make the finished character permanent like GTA Online did it, occasionally offering another go maybe after certain time. Ah yes, the big bad thing about custom characters everyone seems to be so obsessed with; 12-year-olds being able to realize their wet dreams of becoming big-titted woman. Who gives a shit? In the end, this is just hilarious to watch what reasons some retards will throw around how they can't alter the dick size of their character and how it ruins this game where you can casually do cannibalism.
It seems like a disingenuous excuse to say that they just didn't want to put effort into a character creator. All they had to do was put a check box for sex and a few for skin color. Done.
Tying physical appearance to a hard steamID is far more original than letting players customise their character like everything else does A properly random character generator like this sets an even playing field. letting people change the character would be daft Make an interesting building or something instead. PCGamer actually talked about rust in the recent Gamer Show
[t]http://i.imgur.com/o0raSAw.png[/t] :zing:
Gee', one would think that a game was seen as recreational entertainment and not an identity simulator.. And I really gotta ask how insecure someone's gotta be if they worry more about their appearance than their accomplishments..? sure I like to have a creative and good looking character in most games, but my first priority is public appearance.. the things i do, and how i do them, becomes my real character appearance.
I'm just glad my life isn't lame enough to get upset about something trivial in a video game. God some people need to get a grip.
Let me start off by saying that I don't even own Rust. I really don't care. It just seems silly to pretend that it's some great way to make the gameplay better. Based on all the videos I've seen the randomized character traits don't add anything other than annoying some people. The thought also just came to me that the vast majority of female characters in the game are going to have male voices coming from them. That would be super immersion breaking.
As if Rust has any immersion to begin with. You since you don't own Rust let me be the one to tell you it's 90% kids and micspammers. A male voice coming from a female is much less immersion breaking than hearing an overmodulated rickroll blasting over someone's mic [editline]14th April 2016[/editline] Again I think its just to spite people that have a problem with it which is hilarious [editline]14th April 2016[/editline]
Didn't take long for someone to switch into I LITERALLY FEAR FOR MY LIFE EVERY DAY mode and completely melt down they're just kicking and screaming
I love this so much. What a fucking child
If garry caves and adds character customization, I have a few things I need added to make my life not miserable: -An acne slider. If I can't represent my ACTUAL amount of acne (a lot) ingame, then I feel it hinders my ability to try and deal with having bad skin in my real life. This is a problem. -An innie/outie check box for belly buttons. I'm normal, and obviously have had an innie, but I really feel like my character has an outie and it's part of his whole persona. -Which-toe-on-your-foot-sticks-out-furthest selection. Every time I look down at my feet and see the big toe sticking out ahead of the one next to it, I get really upset. Makes me feel like a caveman or something. As far as I'm concerned, those things are just as important as being able to choose your gender/skin color. Also while he's at it I want to customize the individual spacing of hair follicles.
Where's the box for iris color you fucking communist pig [editline]14th April 2016[/editline] And a penis size slider :downs:
garry if i ever doubted you i'm so sorry this has given me laughing fuel for days, absolute genius [editline]14th April 2016[/editline] i fucking love watching people get mad over spawning as a black guy or a woman, it's the gift that keeps on giving
I don't play rust and when I first read about this I thought it was pointless and stupid but reading trough some of the things you guys have written has made me see how this could be a cool feature that adds to the realism in a survival game. Good call by Garry.
the only people complaining about not being the right color - are racists, no matter how hard they say they aren't= [editline]14th April 2016[/editline] this is a system that wouldn't make sense in any other genre it fits so well within the survival genre. And it gives Rust a unique charm that allows it to get an edge over other games.
It's actually not
int raceGender(SteamID){ //0=WM 1 = WW 2 = BW 3 = BM return math.randomSeed(SteamID)(0, 3); }
This is my first and only attempt at anything related to Lua but from some cursory google searching it's that easy
Rust is in C# (and standard Lua doesn't have curly brackets. This could be valid C# with a weird API though).
Doesn't tribalism make sense socially in a primitive survival game?
Absolutely, but tribalism isn't something you get an awful lot of when players are given the controls on character creation since everyone usually goes some shade of White Male. Now you've got gangs of white men going out to hunt any blacks they see, black men doing the same with whites, and I could've sworn I heard about an all-female tribe hiding out in the forests somewhere. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if there's discrimination on body shape going on right now, with women and men alike enjoying status boosts due to bigger boobs or a long dong (been hearing about that occurring from second-hand sources.) Honestly, it's only a matter of time until we get entire tribes of manlets lurking in the forests like pygmies, or when hair is eventually added we have further divisions along perceived ethnic lines.
why even care lol, it's different and makes things more interesting imo.
why even care lol, it's different and makes things more interesting imo.
mumble mumble something about suppressing player choice mumble mumble being the wrong gender in a video game is comparable to gender dysmorphia in real life mumble mumble
racism in the game means racism in real life~ i think that's the plot of the matrix anyways?
Should all games let you play the color you want? should you be able to play as a black woman in Bioshock infinite / Stalker / just cause 3 / metal gear solid? obviously those games are different because they're directly telling the story of the character involved, which is why that would happen, and why that should happen, as it wouldn't work otherwise, but at the same time, why does a survival game have to be about the character you want? why can't you create your own character out of what you have? In fallout 4 I picked something I never really pick, a black dude. Just a normal black guy, completely calm, intelligent, and I decided to go with untrusting and cynical but very friendly, as opposed to someone whose my own skin color who just straight up tries to be non-violent and naively friendly. Hell, that's why I always go Argonian in Elder scrolls games. Kind of, creating living elses story is way the hell more interesting than literally just being yourself. There is no identity to someone who is every bit you after all. [editline]14th April 2016[/editline] also fuck nords
I'm happy because I got a black dude with a huge cock and it makes tossing spears at people really enjoyable.
