Garry writes for The Guardian: Why my videogame chooses your character’s race and gender for you

I really like this idea. There's a lot of other survival games that give you customisation. This is something pretty unique as far as I'm aware.
Rust is in C# (and standard Lua doesn't have curly brackets. This could be valid C# with a weird API though).
It's not C#, Lua, or C++ as far as I can tell, it's closest to C++ but it's missing a data type on the function parameter. In lua the header would have "function" instead of a return type (it's flexible in lua) and instead of curly braces end at the end. Either way what they posted is nonsense, that code if it was proper syntax would make you random every time you generated rather than the same steamid always generating the same character.
Not being able to choose who you are is a gameplay choice with (imo) interesting ramifications. If you don't like it, maybe you don't like the gameplay and should not buy the game. Demanding that Garry change it because you don't want to be a black woman is like me demanding that the developers of Doom remove the guns because I don't want to be someone who shoots a gun.

No it wouldn't, they seed the random number generator with the steamid.
Should've made genderless/featureless characters instead. Imo once you've got loads of gear on, it doesn't really matter anyway. I don't really need gender in a game.
I like uniqueness.
I just wish my hair wasn't blue for some odd reason.
[editline]a[/editline]
Actually, changing your hair and shit would make sense but as of right now everyone's bald so I'm not gonna bother complaining until I see how that's implemented

Nords are racist dicks though
"SKYRIM IS FOR THE NORDS"
more like fuck off or I'll shove my curved redguard dick up your ass
Nice. I got a white girl with a good set of tits.
I love this change. IMO it's one of the best things about new rust. I've always loved the idea of randomized, permanent, unchangeable characters in online games. Rust is pretty much the only game that has that and now it has not just black and white guys but also females giving it some extra variety. I really hope that rust is developed to the point where your characters face really matters.
And the fact that is annoys russian is icing on top.
fuck you
nords are smelly people with beards who live in huts made of mud
[editline]15th April 2016[/editline]
Imperials are so blatantly superior that I'm almost amazed that you'd even imply nords are anything more than unfashionably lame
[editline]15th April 2016[/editline]
and they aren't TWWWWWAAAATS to argonian mages
When I heard of this change I loaded it up hoping I'd get a chick. I did, I got a black chick. Even if I hadn't though it's not like I'd have screamed about how much of a shitlord Garry is or anything, it doesn't really matter in the long run.

#EndFantasyRacism
I have no problems with this at all, in fact I really like it. It's like a fascinating social experiment to me.
Though I've noticed there's three types of people in games where it's possible to play as different kinds of characters:
1) Those who only play as their own gender and pretty much make an avatar out of their real-life selves
2) Those who like to step outside their usual roles in life (be it for roleplaying reasons or because you like looking at the other gender's booties)
3) Sexists/Racists that refuse to play as different genders/races but the other customisation options are fair game
I definitely count myself as category 2, can understand why category 1 people don't like this 'change' and are objecting.
As for category 3, well, don't fucking care, go fuck yourselves you fucking bigots.
I was actually kinda interested in rust but now, eh
I'm a sucker for character customization and the fact that it is possible to have various different characters but you're stuck with someting forever and "if you don't like it, tough titty" really turns me off. I don't like playing as a dude in games where male and female avatars exist, and having a dong forced down my hole when the alternative exists rubs me the wrong way
I think the players should be given the options of what they want to play as.
However, if Garry starts implementing hormones, all will be forgiven.
“Why won’t you give the player base an option to choose their gender? I just want to play the game and have a connection to the character like most other games I play. Not have some political movement shoved down my throat because you make the connection we can’t choose our gender in reality so let’s make it like that in game too.”
It's horrible. Next thing you know servers will add rules refusing people whose real life and in-game genders don't match up.
[editline]15th April 2016[/editline]
If custom servers where you are allowed to customize your character freely appear, can we call them safe spaces?

haha yeah people wanting a character customizer are the same as people proposing institutional racism and general toxicity nice one man!!
i fucking love watching people get mad over spawning as a black guy or a woman, it's the gift that keeps on giving
At this point based on seeing what people ended up with and raged about, I would honestly be pissed off if I just randomly rolled a default bald white dude
At this point based on seeing what people ended up with and raged about, I would honestly be pissed off if I just randomly rolled a default bald white dude
Yeah that's what happened to me when they first added new characters.
*character customization? awesome*
no choice - random appearance
*oh well, at least a new character will be fun*
gets default rust clone
*well FUCK*
*lol*
Idk what my new character looks like for this round of random rolls, haven't played Rust in a while.
haha yeah people wanting a character customizer are the same as people proposing institutional racism and general toxicity nice one man!!
Nah, I just found it absolutely hilarious to see somebody complain about not being the gender they identify with (in the game), and then proceed to complain about the movement that helps people that are not the gender they identify with (in real life).
Choosing a character is one thing, but the amount of outrage that happened with comments like this:

Indicates that this is more of an issue than just the lack of a character editor.
Latest Rust patch nerfed my dick size :/
I think that coding a system that sets up the race and gender and other appearance-related things based on your steamid is more complicated than making a menu that allows you to choose these things.
Is it really that complicated though? I imagine there is a function provided by steam to get your ID, and I dont know exactly how they do it but I imagine you could parse each digit and you basically have 8 random digits, which would be enough to assign character attributes simply.
It seems like a disingenuous excuse to say that they just didn't want to put effort into a character creator. All they had to do was put a check box for sex and a few for skin color. Done.
Nah, I actually like the reasoning behind this. Although, there wouldn't be any harm in re-rolling character traits, say, every 3 months or so.

It would be interesting if everyone's character was randomized again every few months, but everything else stayed the same. It would be a weird dynamic of system-wide reincarnation and it would fuck with race/gender-exclusive groups
