Zero-tolerance: Teaching children to get ready for the police state.
[sp]If you think about it, it's kinda similar. Say the wrong thing, do the wrong thing, boom punished no exceptions. Not saying we are going towards a police state, I don't think we can.[/sp]
I can't understand this. Why would you send a kid to a Delphi school for 2 months for turning himself in immediately for an honest mistake?
At my school our principal made it clear that if we make an honest mistake like taking a knife or beer or cigarettes to school that we should bring said items to the school's office as soon as we find out it's on our person. They'd hold the items until a family member comes to the school to pick it up and we would not be punished for the mistake.
Our school is supposed to have a zero tolerance policy but nobody takes it seriously, the principal is chill and doesn't punish anyone until she knows the hole story. I promise you guys not every school in the US is prison.
I wonder how severely this is going to fuck up the country later on. I mean, this is essentially injecting a bizarre set of rules into young people who are one day going to be adults. So... what, when I'm in my late 40's and I have to hire these people, I'm going to have to teach them how to use their spine? Will I really want anyone who grew up under such a ridiculous system to be a manager, or a shift leader, or some other position of authority?
I'm honestly a bit concerned about this, if I ever reach a point in my life where my self-employment grows to a proper "business owner" then I'll have to face this. I think I'll just buy robots instead, I don't want to deal with that shit.
It will ruin his social life.
I know this because it happened to me for something even more benign when I was in 6th grade. Those schools stunt people academically and socially. Lost nearly all of my friends because I was there for a year and when I came back to regular school I didn't understand anything that I didn't teach myself. Yes I taught myself lots of subjects because what they taught there was below any standard of education would allow.
What, i went to "alternative" school, graduated early, and got out of school around 1 PM.
Shit was awesome, sluttiest girls and majority was doped up on something so making friends was easy.
I remember elementary school pre colombine. We had plastic cap guns and would shoot it out and no one thought anything strange. We were kids that's just what we did.

Forgive me, guys!

Even despite the bans I still forget to always put them :v:
Zero Tolerance: Because fuck the circumstances and fuck you for making an honest mistake we're gonna punish you anyway. Zero Tolerance is utter bullshit and shouldn't be used.

I wish I could've gone to your school when I was going to high school. Fuck man. A kid in my class got ISS for sneezing during a moment of silence. I swear. It's like some sort of regime.
Reason #5 I'm happy I'm not living in the U.S. anymore.
one time i had to meet with my counselor because i mentioned shooting BB guns in one of my essays as a personal hobby
i swear, all zero-tolerance does is teach students to keep their mouths shut about ANYTHING suspicious.
Reading shit like this makes me remember how I did a presentation about BB guns in front of 2 classes without the teacher actually knowing what it was about (due to me & him being sick on and off before) with nothing happening other than the teacher going "well that was unexpected and pretty interesting, nice"
I am so glad that I got to go to a good school with no bullshit policies

Sounds like Vault 101
"and then sent him to an alternative school for two months."
I would really love to know what that's going to do.
cost tax payers money for some sketchy "rehab" program
When it comes to these school suspension news, America never fails to deliver.
Damn I remember school in early 2000 when I accidentally left a swiss army knife in my pocket and when I went up to the teacher to confess he told me to give it to him and pick it up at the end of the day. These days I would probably be arrested and convicted of attempted murder.
I mean I get it we want safe schools here but when an honest to god mistake has been made there shouldn't be punishment.
Im so glad my highschool didnt give to shits about what people brought to school ie knives chewin tobaccee. I brought a pocket knife pretty much every day and my teachers even showed off their new kershaws and what not. Hick town ftw.
In high school a polish kid brought wodka and beer, and my mate got piss drunk in the toilets. We then had 3 hours of class, luckily our teacher was a bro and ignored it (I think, he didn't want a hastle or something).
remember kids: if you're a human being that naturally makes mistakes, then you're suspended!
once in freshman year, i was bored and wrote the first thing that popped in my head down in my notebook
it was random things like "the cow goes WAUGHH" "seven eleven on a sunday morning" "i want to jump off a bridge" and a whole page of stuff like that
a while alter i lost my notebook in my english class, and my teacher took it to the office
they said they couldn't find my name in it (it was on the first page) and i was called to the front
this was right before buses came and i thanked them for finding it
before i could leave, they asked me to sit on the couch in their and wait for a counselor.
i had no idea why but i stayed
i told them i was going to miss the bus but they shuffled me into the counselor room to try and "pry out a reason for my suicidal thoughts" when i was confused they showed me the phrase "i want to jump off a bridge" in my notebook, on a random page maybe 3/4th into the notebook wedged between random phrases
i sat there for 20 minutes trying to tell them i was just random down random stuff, but they werent convinced and sent me to the REAL front office (not the freshman one)
i had to sit in a big conference room with 3 teachers watching me (afraid i might kill myself if i'm left alone) and had to wait for my mom to pick me up.
when she got there, i was embarrased i'd have to convince her it was just random words, but she just rolled her eyes and told me to get in the car, and told me to not be dumb like that.
complete waste of 5 hours.
What kind of schools do you people go to? At least in my school our teachers and principal understand if you make a mistake, people here have owned up to bringing knives (of varying sizes, trust me) and shit like that into school and never been punished. It's just a simple matter of calling the parents to come get it, or holding it until the end of the day.
whats worse is when teachers use zero tolerance policies to cover their incompetence
"i'm sorry i can't grade your paper because your quotes are incorrect and thats plagerism which is an automatic failure according to our school's policy"
said my english teacher 5 DAYS before the fucking school year was over, when the paper had been on her desk for 5 weeks
I had a teacher pull some similar shit on me once where I handed my final paper (worth 33% of total grade, jesus) directly to her. I didn't find out til we got our unofficial reports back at the end of finals week that my grade showed I had a 59.8% in the class after having been at a constant 85+ through the year. When I asked about it she said I never turned it in, and I'd have to retake this course's credit (to which we needed four years of total, meaning I'd have to take a 5th year of high school to make up for it). to top it off she was one of those mean teachers and she just kind of chuckled when she gave me the news
After having a mental breakdown and pleading with the principal to have this looked over we went and sifted through every final paper she received, turned out she placed it in a different class's pile of papers, was even graded. Her excuse after that was that I put it in the wrong place and deserved to not have it count towards my grade, but she'd "let it slide". I think she only pushed me up to a D in the class instead of actually grading it, christ

Unfortunately in most schools, they can't get fired or disciplined for things like this. It's story time guise lets all huddle around.
Basically this guy had severe anger issues who would yell and curse at students grade 7-9 to the point to where parents repetitively phoned in about their children not going to school because of him. For some reason it took like 4 years to get rid of him, people are saying it's because he was the only guitar teacher available in the school district.
Am I the only FPer who though high school was the absolute shit, and had an absolutely fantastic and fun 4 years?
I mean, yeah, there were some problems at many points, but they were due to my own mistakes in and out of school and didn't keep me from overall having a blast with it, especially my senior year.
Nothing except punish him and make his life hell.
American "schools" are nothing more than youth detention centers.
Your flagdog says you're Canadian though. Did you attend a US school?
Zero tolerance rules are so fucked up. Nearly got shit on back in school when I was assaulted because I punched back. Luckily I only got off with a 2 week suspension.

I thought highschool was simply "okay", but to be frank that's because people like us probably had chill teachers and were lucky enough to never deal with any of this bullshit.
fuck the american education system and fuck high school
When I was in grade 11 a kid next to me had a BB gun which looked almost identical to a handgun, which he dropped on the floor when a teacher was walking by.
The teacher just said if he sees it again he's taking it away.
I'm hoping he recognized it as a BB gun...

Im gonna have to agree with this. sure, i didn't learn a fucking thing (which is what would've happened if i'd have gone to a nazi school anyway) but damn did I have fun, and so did everyone else. Only a couple fights a year, no one hated each other (I never, ever saw bullying nor was I ever bullied.)
Thinking back on it, I had a blast in school. Shame I didn't come out of my social shell until 3 years afterwards...
so yeah, School for me was pretty fun. Shame it never taught me any useful life skills but damn do I know 293 different math formulas and what fucking shakespeare did on his days off!
