Sea Shepherd spots whaling fleet 1000 miles away from sanctuary using Drones.

Personally I think sea shephard should GTFO. Regardless of your stance on whaling, there is no place in this world for vigilante eco-terrorists attacking unarmed civilians who are just trying to feed their families.

Thing is that there seems to be a sort of moral difference between killing some generic animal for food and killing a whale.
The more we know about whales, the more intelligent they seem, perhaps even sapient. We might be killing out an actually intelligent species, and that's something that should be unacceptable for us, as a species.
I justify killing normal animals like poultry and generic farm animals because these never have presented intelligence higher than a few line script done in some generic coding language. I see them as simple biological machines. Completely basic robots, void of any higher value than what lies in energy of their flesh and fat.
I simply can't justify it this way when it comes to these creatures, because it's clearly not the case.
I am pretty sure that if a race of aliens from space came and began harvesting us for food, you would be really glad if the ones doing it would be only a minority within a big race and the rest tried to stop them.

Poaching is alright as long as someone is making money? Not to mention they take the best parts of the meat for themselves and sell them for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Veteran whalers have enough to feed their families with one whale.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2010/jun/14/whistleblower-expose-japanese-whaling
Some whalers would take home between five and 10 boxes, he said, while one secured as many as 40 boxes of prime meat that fetches ¥20,000 (about £148) a kilo when sold legally. One crew member built a house with the profits from illicitly sold whale meat, he said. "Another used the money he earned to buy a car," he said. "They were careful to select only the best cuts, like the meat near the tail fin. I never dared challenge them."

He contradicted Japan's claims that the industry, which reportedly required government subsidies of almost $12m in 2008-09, is highly efficient. The fleet would sometimes catch more whales than necessary, he said, strip them of their most expensive parts and throw what was left overboard.
"I didn't think of the embezzlement at first. I just couldn't stand the waste. A lot of meat was being thrown away because we kept catching whales even after we'd reached our daily quota. I decided I had to tell someone what was happening."
It's poaching. Government funded Poaching.

I don't think I'd mind if they started harvesting us as food, they have families to feed afterall.

Thing is that there's thousand different ways of feeding your family. I wouldn't say anything if people were starving and whales were the only source of food available, but that's not the case.
Not going to lie, I love Sea Shepherd. I've been a fan since I visited one of their ships on a school excursion like eight years ago. I would join them if I could. I understand why people find them polarizing (and I'm not 100% behind all of what their members do, but that could go for any organization really) but I think whaling is unacceptable in this day and age - and so is the Australian government letting them off the hook just because of Japan's power in the international political arena. Despite what some of you say, their actions have had positive effects, and they do go out there and fight where it is needed.

They wouldn't accept them. They're quite proud of the fact that they minimize harm done to those whaling, and rightly so.

You could join if you wanted to. They have a ship crewed entirely by Aussies.

Your argument is bordering on the lines of, "Well, it's illegal what they're doing, so...."
Except, um, laws can be wrong sometimes. They're not vigilantes because they're not seeking to punish the whalers for reasons of retribution, they're trying to stop what they see as illegal, immoral, and environmentally devastating behaviour that no-one else is stopping.

It used to be named after the co-founder of Greenpeace, but was renamed about a year after Irwin's death IIRC. It wasn't just for publicity's sake - Irwin was a big supporter of their work, and was supposedly thinking about joining before he died.

media tags are broken.
If they're not wasting the meat I see no problem. I've got no beef with whalers.
I've heard no compelling argument to convince me that whaling is bad.
Most of it is just "ooh whales are intelligent animals" bullshit.

How can whales not be considered intelligent?
I don't really think you can classify humans as the only "intelligent" species on the planet just because we're pretty good with our thumbs.
The second I become a billionaire I'm buying myself the latest nuclear powered Russian sub and hunting whaling ships down while pretending I'm a WW2 submarine commander
Why Russian, US has better. We have been ahead of them the whole way when it comes to submarines.

How about the fact that we're killing them off? In addition to all the general overfishing we've done in the past hundred years, and the fact that the ecosystem will suffer greatly.
I mean, if you follow it to its logical conclusion, are you fine with us killing off whales altogether as long as we got some meat?

Russian subs would be cheaper I'd guess, and doesn't really matter which country the torpedo is from, it's a fucking whaling ship, it's not gonna be armored :v:

Why a Sub then? A WW2 Howitzer and a decent sized ship would be just as effective for budget anti-whaling systems.

Kinda hard to run away from the auzzie army in a boat, compared to a sub :v:

Doesn't matter. They're eco-terrorists, simple as that. I'm not debating the morality on whaling in either direction, personally, I hold no opinion on that. I just go by what the law says here. What I'm against is vigilantes that think they have authority over people that don't even live in their nation and are willing to ram vessels and risk everyone's safety to do something that's illegal.
What they're doing, if it was done to any other sea-faring industry, would be considered piracy. Think about it, if they were ramming container ships full of Hummer parts because hummers use more fuel and put out more CO2 this lot would have been jailed and booked on piracy charges by now. If they were going after oil rigs they'd have the USS Nimitz breathing down their neck within the hour. Going after a crab boat? Coast guard helis would surround them faster than they can tweet "Oh fuck". We'd never hear of them again. However, since it's a whaling operation, everyone's conveniently forgetting that because "OMG Whales!", even though their actions are no less illegal than they would be carried out against any other commercial navy with an environmental impact. Honestly, I don't give a shit why they're attacking unarmed civilians, what they're doing is wrong and should be stopped. Let law enforcement do their job.
Should the Nisshin Maru be scrapped? Should that outfit be punished? Law says so. Should civilians be the ones to do it? No, that's what maritime police are for.

How about orbital smart bomb strikes.
Yeah well i'm gonna do the same in a F-15.
I'm no professional, but I don't think pretending to be a submarine commander in a plane will work.

You think he's some kind of rich man with his measly billion dollars!? Russian subs are cheap, and beggars can't be choosers, man.
The second I become a trillionaire I'm buying myself an aircraft carrier and hunt down whaling ships with my squadrons of Cold War era jets and Kenny Loggin's Danger Zone on repeat.
Why are you guys seriously arguing over Contag's shitposting as if he were saying it seriously.

Eugh, I have such a huge problem with people like you who espouse this kind of shit. By your standards, then, African Americans should still be second class citizens in a segregated society, and women shouldn't be allowed to vote, because that's what the fucking law said at the time. It takes people who disobey these laws deliberately and fight against them for progress to occur. And what the flying fuck is the law for if it's not about morality? Don't give me this crap about 'I'm not debating the morality' - if you're arguing about the law, then you are. It has to come into it, by the very nature of law.
Do you know the definition of vigilante? I don't think you do, because I explained why they're not. A vigilante isn't just someone who breaks the law, or engages in civil disobedience, you know. You sound like you've just heard the term 'eco-terrorists' off the news and are parroting what you've heard the media say about them, because you cannot explain to me why you're against them. Oh, except, other than 'it's against the law'. In my state, changing a lightbulb without being a licensed electrician is against the law, because it was created a long, long time ago and was never updated. Does that make me, and everyone in Victoria who has changed their lightbulbs criminals who deserve to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law?
Also, how are they 'risking everyone's safety' and 'attacking' innocent 'civilians'? How many people do you think they've hurt? You seriously think throwing rancid butter at them is harmful?
Why Russian, US has better. We have been ahead of them the whole way when it comes to submarines.
I'm fairly sure they stopped the ramming and just started blocking the ships, and considering the whalers are whaling in territory that is not their own, I'd say Sea shepard has every right to stop them.

Grow a beard like sean connery and call it Red October.
Why did noone sink the Sea Shepard yet.
Bunch of pricks if you ask me.
I like whales, but what they do is bullshit. Doesn't change anything.
Imagine Indians coming to the US preaching that you should stop eating cows, or Muslims saying you can't eat pig.

The problem is that fact that they're over fishing, so regulations had to be put on whaling otherwise they'd go extinct at the rate they were being fished. Also from what I know Sea Shepard doesn't do any of that violent stuff any more and instead just block ships which from what I've heard has been quite effective.
