Wouldn't be the first time.
Only to get arrested and thrown into a Russian jail (which I presume aren't the nicest jails in the world), plus, you may or may not be throwing potatoes at athletes that aren't homophobes.
Damnit dude I just want to throw a potato at someone :(
Damnit dude I just want to throw a potato at someone :(
Travel back to nineteenth century Ireland, I'm sure you'd be praised and made into a noble.
Guarentee you that not only will the US be one of the few countries to do so, but that they're going to do it over Snowden rather than this.
Let's go Ai wei wei style over russia.
I am absolutely disgusted and ashamed of my own country of origin at the moment, and the things it currently stands for.
if the boycott didn't work. it'd still be cool for all lgbt supporters to bring rainbow flags to wave. i think russians need to realize the world is moving on.
if the boycott didn't work. it'd still be cool for all lgbt supporters to bring rainbow flags to wave. i think russians need to realize the world is moving on.
I think the entire world needs to realize that the world is moving on.
like it matters [editline]7th August 2013[/editline] like that matters either
It doesn't, just I didn't know.
I always find it funny when non-norwegian speakers say and write Lillyhammer instead of Lillehammer which Fry did in this. It actually happens so often that they made a American-Norwegian TV-series called Lilyhammer about an american gangster moving to Norway. But in all seriousness I agree with Fry that this is unacceptable behavior for a country hosting an international event.
The whole point of the Olympics is to Represent international unity in the face of our differences, though i don't agree with Russian policies i don't think this is the way to deal with it.
It actually happens so often that they made a American-Norwegian TV-series called Lilyhammer about an american gangster moving to Norway.
Sidenote, great show, watch it
I think the entire world needs to realize that the world is moving on.
But wait if the entire world has moved on then the world has already realized it
Ill start boycotting after they hand out the medals for hockey
I think the entire world needs to realize that the world is moving on.
Wouldn't this mean that it is in fact, not moving on?
i doubt it's really putin's fault like this article makes it out to be. it's just the general mentality of russians.
How the fuck it is not Putin's fault? He supported and approved that disgusting law. There's no fucking way being a homophobe is in russian mentality. LGBT community is pretty small here. Most of the people are uneducated on that matter. Thus don't give a shit about gay's rights. Putin is using it and this law is his fault.
Good letter. I agree with his sentiment. But, what is a Stephen Fry? Is he a sportsman of some kind?
Good letter. I agree with his sentiment. But, what is a Stephen Fry? Is he a sportsman of some kind?
he's a quite smart comedian, TV personality, and actor, and he hosts QI which is literally better than everything ever
Fun Fact: if Sochi gets a Boycott the IOC can fallback to the last city which means Vancouver could see the games again in five months. Running things a bit late. I don't think we can be ready in this span of time, especially since the venues have now either been demolished or converted into homes/recreation centers.

Or do you just disagree what i said.

HA. Nice.
he's a quite smart comedian, TV personality, and actor, and he hosts QI which is literally better than everything ever
I'll check him out. Always nice to see the work of the professionally witty.
Man, no one fucking gives a shit about Snowden. I care more about Gay Teens in Russia being tortured, captured, and humiliated.
How is Boycotting an Olympics going to stop private persons from doing that?
I didn't know Stephen Fry was gay. Does this mean that everyone else in Wilde is gay too?
Good letter. I agree with his sentiment. But, what is a Stephen Fry? Is he a sportsman of some kind?
You know how you can get waffle fries or crinkle cut fries or even shoestring fries? Stephen fries are fries cut in the shape of Stephen Fry, a British Comedian.
How is Boycotting an Olympics going to stop private persons from doing that?
It wouldn't. People with enculturated intolerance will find a way to express it. But it would deliver a message to the nation that sanctions (by turning a blind eye or even encouraging) the torture of it's own citizens that hurting and killing people is bad. Especially when it's over something a trivial as sexuality. On one hand, it could be said that the rest of the world would be trying to force Russia into their way of thinking. On the other, it could be said that Russia (by officially allowing gay folks to be rounded up, arrested, and beaten) is full of dick. Big, red, intolerant dick. How far away from interment and reeducation camps are they? I mean.. if kids can get killed openly in the streets with no arrests, what's to stop them from going door to door and setting up gay checkpoints? ... stopping there.. I get stupid when I type too long.
I say we stage a boycott of the Winter Olympics akin to those in 1980.
This is a bad idea, because it really, REALLY fucks the Olympic competitors over. I say this because I knew someone who had gotten in the 1980 drafts, but because it was boycotted him (And all the others) weren't allowed to go: he tried going the later years, but in the end it ruined his life and 10 years later he killed himself.
I didn't know Stephen Fry was gay. Does this mean that everyone else in Wilde is gay too?
It's almost as if gay people are normal.
I wasn't even going, its fun to help :D
Yeah, let's just boycott the Winter OS and just outright give the finger to the many people that trained years for this event. I am sorry, but boycotting the winter OS won't make russia change their stance on homosexuality. ...[sp] And to be honest, I think that this "boycott" is for a whole other manner than what most people think.[/sp] Like for example: http://www.usatoday.com/story/onpolitics/2013/07/17/lindsey-graham-olympics-boycott-russia-snowden/2524341/
Yeah totally has nothing to do with Stephen Fry being gay and Russia not only threatening to arrest gay athletes, press, and tourists, but also ignoring the neo-nazi groups kidnapping and torturing gay citizens.
if the boycott didn't work. it'd still be cool for all lgbt supporters to bring rainbow flags to wave.
Actually no it would not. Russian Police will arrest you for being a supporter.
